Personally i am not a fan of hms, i feel that they severly limit a pokemon i.e. taking up an attack space and kinda forcing you to use it in order to advance or gain items. Now my question is a)what are the necessity hms to teach and b)how many of you keep an hm using pokemon in your team. For instance im not using a water pokemon or flying type in my team are surf and fly really worth a spot?

Really, you'll need all the HMs in one point or another. Surf and Waterfall are the most strongest ones, Fly is good only for in-game battles. The other HMs are pretty bad. For me, I keep an HM slave, a Pokemon that really isn't supposed to battle but just lets you get all the HMs.

Well personally, I only use about 3 Pokemon in my *fighting* team at a time. This leaves me places for the most needed HMs, such as Surf, Fly and Rock Smash/Climb/Strength. For surf and waterfall, I have a relatively weak Buizel, for Fly and Defog, I have a relatively weak Wingull, and for Rock Smash, Rock Climb and Strength, I have a relatively weak Geodude. I'd say the only HM I need to switch in from time to time is Cut. I use a Pachirisu for that. Hope I helped!

i like your ideas, cause really im leveling up a team of a seviper, skorupi, gastly, misdreavus, and duskull hopefully soon. my strongest is a 41 infernape, i think im gonna level them up first then get some weaker hm slaves. thanks guys

I just use my Pelipper with Surf/Fly/Defog, and I have a Dugtrio for cutting whenever I need it. Though now that I have beat the game and am concentrating on EV training, I don't need the others(I have the Dugtrio to get me into the Old Chateau). My Dragonite has Waterfall if I really need it, and the Infernape I've kept from my initial run-through has Rock Climb. As for Rock Smash and Strength, I keep an Onix in the PC, but I haven't taken him out in years, XD.

So yeah, for generally moving around, just get something that can Fly and something that can Surf.

I honestly switch out HM slaves from the pc whenever I need them, My battling team consists of poke that dont even use HMs at all. I HATE the concept of HMs in the game, and I think that the poke developers should have found some other way to teach your main character moves to get past certain things. HMs make a normal players team so plain, have to have a water, have to have a rock/normal/ground have to have a flying..... Its way lame!
