    Holon Phantoms Part One

Deep within the unknown lands beyond those laboratories of Holon, where shadows fall and phantoms dwell…

You may think that there is no such thing as phantoms… that is, until you fall in love with one…

    1: Phantasmal Memories

He could still faintly remember that time many, many years ago… how he was cast out of his home, how he discovered that place, and how they first met and became best friends…

That life-changing day flashed back before his eyes for yet another time: he went home after another seemingly ordinary day, but found out that the doors were locked… His parents were both home. He knocked on the front door. No one answered. He knocked on the back door. No one answered. He shouted into the windows. No one answered… He rubbed his eyes, and took another good look into the dining room through the windows – his family was right there, feasting around the dining table. He knocked hard on the window. Still, they didn't even take a notice of him, as if they were phantoms, or, as if he was a phantom himself… Anxiety, fear, loneliness and desolation shrouded him, making him begin to wonder whether he did something wrong, but he couldn't think of a single thing he did to deserve that, except…

Except that he never grew up!

That was his seventeenth year with the couple whom he'd always known as his parents; however, he only had a body of a seven years old child… And he never actually realized that something about him was just not right, not until then…

He searched around the house, trying to find a way in before dark, but every single door and window was locked tight. However, he did find a hand-written note outside his bedroom's window. It reads:

    Dear Son:

We know this might be too harsh on you, but it's for your own good…

Please let us explain. Firstly, we're not your real parents (whose whereabouts are unknown to us); we found you lying in the forest far-east of the main laboratory, so we took you home, and raised you as our own child. You were just a baby then, but we knew you were certainly not a new-born baby, because you're different from us – as you should've realized by now, you're something other than human; in fact, you're an elf! (Doesn't this explain why you've always looked so young, and why you're having those long and pointed ears?)

We don't know how you ended up here in Holon, but we know that you do not belong in this world. So, leave now; return to where you came from, and there you shall find your destiny!

    Love from,

Larry and Melanie Bruonstud (Your "parents")

PS: There is a PokéDex and a Poké-Ball that contains an Anorith under that Pecha berry tree – take them; they might be of some help to you. And there are also five empty balls, too, incase you might need them to capture your own Pokémon. Make sure you weaken them first before trying to catch them. That's all, take care!

He read it. He took the Anorith and those Poké-Balls. And he finally realized what the only right thing for him to do was. That is, to return to where he came from, which might or might not be those untouched forests on the eastern side of Holon…

Therefore, he went, after picking a couple of ripe Pecha berries for supper. He walked; he almost tirelessly walked, eastwards, into those "forbidden" forests, which were rumored to be haunted by phantoms. It was late night already, and he finally felt weary, so he sat down under a giant Sitrus berry tree and tried to get some rest for that melancholic night…

But he was unaware of that he was being watched by a pair of ominous crimson eyes from within the leaves of that tree… He fell into a deep sleep right under those glowing eyes…

    2: The Phantom Meadows

She woke him up the next morning.

He found himself in a straw bed in a small hut on the top of that giant Sitrus tree, and he wondered how he got up there – that was the moment he saw her standing beside him… He nearly freaked out; he thought she was a phantom because of the way she looked. She had dark green hair that curled upwards from her shoulders, and a pair of clear but somewhat menacing crimson eyes; her petite, pearl white body had a couple of blood-red pinnacles pointing out from her chest and back, and a pair of long and flexible arms that were also shaded in dark green; her wraithlike, translucent white skirt that seemed to have grown onto her body, waved gently in the morning breeze, making her appear more like a real phantom… Only as the morning sun shed its golden rays upon her, he realized from her shadow that she was a corporeal figure – that she was real.

"Um… excuse me, how did I get up here?" He instinctively asked her.

"I brought you up here, because sleeping under a tree isn't good for you. This is where I live, it should be big enough for both of us – so you can stay here for a while if you have nowhere to go." She answered in a modestly dreamy voice that wonderfully complemented her phantasmal facade. "By the way, why did you come here? There hasn't been a single person here for quite a while..." She inquired.

"I… I got… um, kicked out because I'm different… I mean… I don't really belong here. I'm just trying to go back to where I came from… but… but I don't know, I don't know where I really came from… Um, I know here is where they found me…" He replied in a way that seemed more like gibberish than an answer – at least it seemed that way to her.

"Well, I don't want to know who kicked you out or why, because I hate to get involved in people's matters," She commented, "but still, why did you call yourself 'different'?"

"It's obvious. Just look at my ears… And I'm at least seventeen years old but I still look like a child. How can you call that normal? I'm different because I ain't a human, and I ain't even a Pokémon! I'm an outcast in this world…" He groaned, and shed a few bitter tears.

"So am I," She sighed, "an outcast…"

"Why? I mean, what exactly are you anyway?" He finally noticed something about her…

"A Delta-Species," She answered, "we only exist here, in Holon. And you see those labs over the west coast? Those researchers are doing experiments on us to find out what caused us to genetically mutate into completely different types, and why we all gain the Steel-type's characteristics after we fully evolve…" It appeared that she had only confused him further…

"Um… so you're a Pokémon after all?" He asked.

"Yes, but I'm not the sort of Pokémon you know…" She sat down beside him and sighed again.

He pulled out his PokéDex from a pocket on his shirt and scanned her with it. The PokéDex responded, but with only a flaky screen: "Unidentified species – no available data." Well, that's helpful, he thought, as he shut down the PokéDex and put it back into his pocket. He studied her appearance again; he was certain that he had seen something like her before, and that her species was definitely not unidentified, but he just couldn't recall its name… He buried himself in a deep thought, trying to remember its name…

She noticed his uneasy expression, and tried to change the subject. "Oh, I haven't introduced myself yet. I'm a Delta-Species Gardevoir, they call me June, because I was born on the first day of June. Now, what's your name?" She asked.

Ah, right! A Gardevoir – that's what she is! But why doesn't the PokéDex recognize her? He lost himself in thoughts again…

"Hey! Get over it; you'll be all grown up before you know it! Now, how should I call you?" June nudged him with her elbow, trying to refine the gloomy atmosphere.

"Huh? Oh, sorry… I'm Lorryn, Lorryn Bruonstud."

… That's how they met and got to know each other. Although Lorryn had no idea what June meant by "Delta-Species", he accepted the fact that she was different, just like him, if only because that she can't even be identified by his PokéDex… He learned from June that the forest was one of the "unknown" places in Holon, which people call the "Phantom Meadows".

Lorryn soon found out why they call it the Phantom Meadows…

It is a place that distorts reality…

As he remembers, June had always warned him not to go out without bringing a strong Pokémon with him, because it could be dangerous. However, the only Pokémon he had at that time was that Anorith his parents left him, and it was at a very low level. He thought it'd be good to train his Anorith so it could collect enough experience points to level up and grow stronger, so he took it out deeper into the forest… That was the time he experienced something that actually made him distrust his own consciousness…

He knew Anorith is partly Bug-type, so it'd have an advantage against the Chimecho that he found floating around. He called out his Anorith and ordered it to use Fury Cutter on that Chimecho. It did, but its attack didn't seem to have any effect although Chimecho was supposed to be weak against a Bug-type attack. That Chimecho countered with a surprise Iron Tail attack that knocked his Anorith right into the ground, and it floated away… And that was not all. On his way back to June's place, he was attacked by Confusion from a Vileplume, Thunder Shock from a Pidgeotto, and even Flamethrower from an enraged Primeape. All those attacks from those Pokémon just didn't make any sense to him; he wondered whether he was actually awake.

He was, and all that he had seen were real.

It was the way things are at that particular place.

    3: A New Origin

Many years have passed since Lorryn and June first met, and Lorryn had finally grown out of his child's body – he now appears to be a teenager although he is much older than that. He still has no idea where he really came from or how he ended up in this world, but one thing has changed, he no longer sees himself as an outcast. He knows that he does belong to this world; because he has realized that he is a part of it.

Lorryn now opens his own Pokémon medicine shop besides the laboratories of Holon. He took advantage of the fact there are always researchers in the labs that require some sort of potions time after time, and so his business has been extremely well because of that, and he has really made some money from it.

Although people have learned more and more about those strange Delta-Species of Pokémon, they have never really seen one of them beyond the walls of the laboratories. There might be an occasional one or two running around those gigantic concrete lairs, but it is almost certain that they belong to someone in the lab. Those eastern forests that people call the Phantom Meadows were still untouched for some apparent reason, and those Delta-Species the labs catch are all from elsewhere. The residential area in the central parts of Holon had grown quite a bit, however, the development had only been directed westwards – it's a good thing that people still believe that the forests belong to those "phantoms" and shouldn't be touched. Also, there is now an official Pokémon Gym in Holon, it is opened by the labs. The Gym is used to be run by the administrator of the Holon Research Institute, Dr. Christopher Maine, since recently, but he was somehow brushed off by the official Pokémon Gym inspectors, saying that his Pokémon were not "up to standard" to be used in Gym battles. So there has been preparing for some sort of an unofficial tournament to decide who the next Gym leader will be, and the strangest thing is that anyone who owns more than five different species of Pokémon can enter the tournament.

Lorryn and Christopher had known each other for quite a long time, so Christopher believed that Lorryn should have a go at it. He came to Lorryn's store and tried to convince him into participating in the upcoming tournament.

"You know, Lorryn, you were one of the first trainers to have defeated me in the Gym, so I believe that you should definitely enter the tournament. You might just get the position as the official Gym leader of Holon." Christopher persuaded.

"Come on, Chris! How many times do I have to tell you that I only have four Pokémon, including my old Armaldo! And I only won that Delta Badge from you because you took it easy on me. I mean you didn't even use your Salamence, or your Dragonite… No, I won't stand a chance in there, not in that crowd!" Lorryn countered almost automatically.

"No, just look at those people – how many of them are actually newbs that wanted to show off? I'd say at least half! And you know why they kicked me out, right – they just didn't like to have an 'insider' to run the Gym, know what I mean?" Chris said, "oh, by the way, for you fifth Pokémon, just go out to the sea and fish yourself a Sharpedo or Tentacruel, or just go up to the mountains and catch something that can put up with a fight. Anyway, your Armaldo alone can probably take three down – it is an EX after all!"

"Yeah, well, do they allow any Delta-Species to enter? Still, they are Pokémon, and you can't really tell by just looking!" Lorryn asked while showing a hint of interest.

"Of course, mate! That Salamence I used in the Gym is a Fire-type, remember? They do allow Deltas here, and only here!" Chris assured him. "W…Wait; are you saying that you have a Delta? How did you get it - from the lab?" He suddenly realized why Lorryn would be asking about that.

"Um… no, I don't exactly own one, and it's not from the lab either. Well, I've known her for a long time; just thought if she could help, but nah, forget it – she wouldn't want to anyway…" Lorryn shook his head.

"Oh…? Who is the 'she' you're talking about - got yourself a girl already? Just keep in mind that she'll be ninety before you see thirty, ha-ha…" Chris teased him. Lorryn tightened his fist.

"Oh, shut up! I'm not talking about a person here; I'm talking about a… Uh, never mind, you wouldn't want to know anyway…" Lorryn regretted for mentioning it, now he was trying to hide it…

"Huh, you're not talking about some sort of an android are ya? And don't tell me you've…"

"Come on, damn it! You really should clean that perverted scientific head of yours! Okay, she's a Pokémon, all right? A Pokémon, do you understand now?" Lorryn cut him off; he knows that there is no way he can hide it forever, not after once he's mentioned it… "I've known her since I was little, so we're like… old friends, yeah…"

"Well, that must be some close friend for you to refer to as 'she'…" Chris scratched his chin. "Oh, don't get me that way – it, I mean, 'she', is a Pokémon after all, ha-ha… Um, what is 'she' anyway – a Delta?"

"Um, to be honest with you, I'm not that sure myself. She said she's a Delta-Species, but she doesn't look like one of them at all; I mean, she's always been quite… um, normal, you know." Lorryn replied, "Oh, if you want to know 'what' she is, well, she's a Gardevoir – a girl one, of course…"

"Mmmm… a girl Gardevoir, huh – so cute… they make good girlfriends for perverts that can't get a real girl, he-he…"

"Yeah, like you…" Lorryn sounded a little annoyed. And Chris was aware of that; he knew that he's said too much.

"Well, think I should bugger off now – got more work to be done in the lab. Laters for now, and have fun with your Garde-girl, ha-ha…" He exited Lorryn's store.

"Ugh…! Why you…" Lorryn ground his teeth and pummeled the table.

Since they knew each other, Christopher had always made fun of Lorryn's "elvenness", despite of that, they've been close friends.

Speaking of his old friend, Lorryn hasn't been into the forests to see June for a long time; his shop's always been so busy, morning until night… He'd been convincing June for a while to get a cell phone, so they could keep in touch without actually seeing each other face to face, but she warded him off with the excuse of that there wouldn't be any signal in the forests, which might well be true, but the real reason she didn't want one is that she doesn't want to attract any researchers over to the forests with the radio transmissions from a cell phone.

It was a Sunday afternoon, and there haven't been many customers in his shop, so Lorryn had finally decided to close up for the day and spend the rest of the time with June for a change. So he literally sneaked into the Phantom Meadows when no one was around, and he found his way to June's place. However, just before he saw June's Sitrus tree, he spotted a couple of suspicious people creeping around. They were dressed shadily in black and they each had a black hood covering their heads. From their voices Lorryn recognized that the taller person was a man and the shorter one was a woman. He hid behind a tree and watched them…

"… Ah, here they are – this is where the wild Delta-Species live!" said the woman.

"This is a place they live, but it's not the only place, you know, Monica." The woman's name was Monica.

"That doesn't matter; we've finally found them anyway. But Josh, are you certain that they're not the same as those known as Mirage Pokémon? I mean, I do see a lot of similarities between them…"

"Well, for that I cannot say for sure, but I believe they're totally different – these are actually living beings, unlike the Mirage Pokémon, which are purely data… However… as you said, there are a lot of similarities…"

As they held their conversation, a small squad of wild Vileplumes came out of the bushes; they stared at them angrily. Obviously, they've intruded their territory.

"Hey, Josh, I think we shouldn't be here – look at them, they certainly aren't very happy about us being here…" Monica nudged Josh.

"Yeah, you're right; we should run for it, unless you want their Stun Spore all over us!" Josh suggested.

The eyes of those Vileplumes glowed red…

"Eek," Monica screamed, "run for it, Josh!" She dragged him and ran outwards from the forest. Those Vileplumes chased.

"I'm bloody trying to! But I can't!" Josh shouted from behind, as a blue glow appeared around his body and he got mysteriously lifted off the ground. "What the hell…?"

Monica turned around and saw what was before her eyes. Her jaw dropped in awe, and she covered her wide open mouth with both hands; she was completely stunned and speechless, because she just couldn't believe what she saw – Vileplumes using the Confusion attack, instead of Stun Spore or Petal Dance!

"Oy, what are you doing? Don't just stand there! Help me out for goodness sake!" Josh growled.

Monica snapped out of her astonishment and grabbed his legs, trying to drag him back down onto the ground. However, despite of their struggle, those Vileplumes wouldn't let go of Josh; instead, they disabled Monica as well with their Confusion attack. Lorryn saw them, and he decided that he had to help them out, no matter what sort of people they might be.

"Go, Blade, help them out – use Rock Blast on those Vileplumes!" Lorryn launched a Poké-Ball towards those Vileplumes. His Armaldo, Blade, came out and flapped the plates on its back, sending a barrage of rocks into the Vileplume squad and broke their Confusion on the two. "Now, Blade, blow them away with Sandstorm!" Blade flapped its plates even harder, creating a vortex of sand and rock; those Vileplumes fled into the bushes. Lorryn called Blade back into its Poké-Ball.

Josh and Monica got up and saw Lorryn saved them. "Oh, thanks very much for saving us, but we've got to get going now. See you!" They ran off before Lorryn could say anything.

"Hey, wait! Who are you people anyway?" Lorryn chased and shouted towards them, but he gave up as they've run too far… "What the… This is strange… I don't normally see anyone around here…" He mumbled to himself…

"Neither do I, Lorryn, I wonder what they're up to…" Christopher popped out behind him, giving him quite a fright.

"Chris? How did you get here?" Lorryn turned around. "Have you been stalking me or something? Anyway, you'd better get outta here before you get barbecued by a Pidgey or something."

"Hah, like that's gonna happen…" Chris laughed, "Why did you come here anyway - to see your little love-muffin?"

"Shut up, and get over this 'love' thing! I told you, she's just a friend, a 'friend', and nothing more! Do you understand?" Lorryn groaned in frustration.

"Yeah, yeah, I understand. Wish I could have a cute little female Gardevoir instead of my nagging old wife… Man, you're so damned lucky, Lorryn…" Chris said contemptuously.

"I don't need anymore of your lame sarcasm, Chris. Why don't you try saying that to your wife, and see how she'll react? Well, that'll be at least fun to watch…" Lorryn has finally caught a chance to pick on Chris for a change.

"Ha-ha, I was only joking, mate! Anyway, would it hurt to allow me to have a look at your girlfriend? I just want to see how cute she is – I haven't seen a Gardevoir in ages, you know." Chris asked.

"Well, it won't hurt me but it might hurt you, because she can be quite shy around strangers – and she's not my 'girlfriend', okay? Oh, her name's June, by the way…"

"Can you two stop talking about me so loud? The whole forest can hear you! And, who says I'm shy?" June jumped down from a tree; in fact, she's been listening to them since they came. "So, Lorryn, you've finally decided to see me, huh? I was just about to go to your store and stir up some trouble. I thought you've forgotten about me…" She grabbed Lorryn and gave him a loving embrace – the type of embrace a girl gives to her lover, instead of that old friends share.

"Oh, hey June - never thought you'd be out here! Anyway, this is Dr. Chris Maine; he's the admin of the Institute, and my friend. Just be careful cuz he's quite an old pervert, he-he – just kidding, Chris…" Lorryn 'introduced' Chris to her – in a way Chris wouldn't like very much, of course. Well, it's time Lorryn hit on him for a while…

Chris was too astonished to take any particular note of what Lorryn said about him – he always assumed that all that "Gardevoir girlfriend" business were nothing but a joke that Lorryn made up for fun. "W…What, no way, she… she can talk?!" He couldn't believe it. "Hey, Lorryn, that June is really something…! I've never seen a Pokémon that can talk before!"

"Why are you so surprised?" June asked. "I can talk all right. I used to live in the town before I moved here, so learning your language is a piece of cake. Oh, by the way, Lorryn, did I show you this little cottage I fixed up lately? Come with me – I'll take you to it." She led the way.

They followed her to an open area in the forest by a mountain stream. There was an old wooden cottage, which seems to be constructed at least a century ago. It has one small window with a copper frame, and the glass is still in its original shape, but the dents on the frame suggest that it's been changed quite a few times. The door is iron plated and looking worn; it had a number of holes and dents all over the outside, showing that it must have had a rough time then. The same goes for the roof, which is also plated with iron and copper. However, the interior was in near-perfect condition, and there is even electricity, maybe that's only because June had cleaned and fixed everything inside. All those damages to the outside of the cottage suggested that there might have been some sort of a riot, or battle, going on at that time, and it also gave a clear indication that there had been many people living in those forests not too long ago, and the reason that everyone moved out might have something to do with the discovery of those Delta-Species Pokémon.

June says that the cottage was clearly abandoned by people that left there in a hurry, because there were a bed and a table, and even some kitchenware inside when she found it – they've all gone rusty or rotten, of course, so she threw them out. She also said there were other similar cottages on the mountains, but they were all demolished and left to rot, some became the homes of wild Pokémon like Oddish and Rattata. She rarely ventures beyond the forests so she doesn't know much about the other side of those mountains, except that there is the sea.

"What you reckon had happened here, Lorryn?" Chris asked, "It seems that all the damage was caused by Pokémon instead of people; just look at where those dents are – they're all over the place, and most of them are lower than your waist level!" He suggested.

"No idea, mate, and I wouldn't draw any conclusions at this stage…" Lorryn replied.

Chris' cell phone rang – there was signal in the forests; although not very good quality, he can hear the voice from the other side. The call was from one of his colleagues in the Institute, saying that he must return immediately for something terrible has happened – one of their experimental Pokémon broke out of the laboratory and wandered towards the residential area, and it might cause some trouble, but their main concern was its own safety.

"Oh, blast!" Chris cursed, "Anyhow, I got to go, Lorryn. Talk to you later!" He hurried back to the Institute.

    "What's wrong?" June asked.

"Don't know, he says some Pokémon escaped from their labs, anyway, he's got to take care of that." Lorryn shrugged his shoulders. "Oh, yes! There's something I need to talk to you about – why don't we go inside?"

They entered that cottage June fixed up. It's not perfect but it is warm and cozy.

"Well, two things actually, one is that there's a tournament coming up, to find the next Gym leader for Holon. Chris got shoved off because those inspector people didn't like him for some apparent reason; he's always too busy to give trainers proper Gym matches, if that's one of the reasons. Anyway, he says you'll need five different Pokémon to enter the tournament, but I've only got four: a Crawdaunt, an Alakazam, a Shuppet, and my old Armaldo, Blade. So I'm just wondering whether you can help me out, just to fill the number, you know… And it's not a professional tournament, so Blade is probably all I'll really need…" Lorryn said, but he doubted that June would like to participate in that sort of a "melee".

"Um… do they allow Delta-Species to enter?"

"Yes, they do! And they even allow them in the Gym as well!" Lorryn quickly replied as he saw June showing some interest – otherwise why would she be asking?

"Great then, I'll go with you! I mean, why not? I'd love to help you out, because you're my best friend, Lorryn!" June gave him an evocative leer, "And you know – you'll be much better off running the Holon Gym than selling your medicines to the lab."

Lorryn was actually quite surprised to hear that from June, saying she'd love to participate in the upcoming tournament, because it was somehow contrary to her quiet nature, and that's also why she left the city, which was far too noisy for her liking.

"Oh, thanks heaps, June!" Lorryn grabbed her hands with joy and gratitude, for that he'd be able to sign up for the tournament. "You're really a good friend – you're my best friend!"

"Um, by the way, Lorryn, what's the other thing you wanted to say?" June reminded him.

"Oh, yes! Did you see those two people just now? They looked pretty dodgy to me – just look at the way they dress – and they've been on about some 'Mirage Pokémon'… if you have any idea what that is…" He said.

"No idea. But I've been watching them for a while too, before you two came. They didn't seem to be looking for trouble or anything, but I don't really like the way they dress either – they seem like in some kind of a secret organization. Anyway, I think we can leave them for now, as long as they don't come back here and cause trouble." June replied; she didn't seem to be concerned at all.

"Yeah, I reckon…" Lorryn agreed. "It's not like we can do anything about them right now, not until they've actually caused any trouble…"

"Hey, when is the tournament? And where?" June changed the subject.

"The tournament won't start until the next month, but we've got to sign up now, because the registration closes this Friday. There must be at least a hundred people going for it, so the earlier we sign up, the better. Oh, and it's just in the Gym, to make it easier." Lorryn answered.

It's been quite a long time since Lorryn last came to see June, and she really missed him a lot; after all, they've known each other since Lorryn was little – to be precise, it was sixty-four years ago when June found Lorryn sleeping under that Sitrus berry tree and took him to her home.

It was nearly dark. They had their supper, and June knew that Lorryn would have to go home soon, but she missed him too much to say goodbye again, so she decided to try and keep him a little longer, that is, at least for the night…

"Lorryn," She demanded his attention, "do you want to stay here for the night? Because I really want to be with you for a little longer; I missed you so much since the last time you left me… It can get quite lonesome here in this forest… Please stay!" She insisted on him staying while trying to remain calm, but as Lorryn gazed into her beautiful crystalline eyes and embraced her compassionately, she held him tighter, and surrendered to a paroxysm of tears…

Lorryn had never seen June crying before; in fact, when he was little, he was the one that always cried whenever he was upset or depressed. So, her crying had made him realize how little he had been in touch with his best and closest friend lately, as he was constantly busy with his business at the store. He also remembered that mutual promise they've made to each other, that none of them would ever experience again the dreadful solitude and despair that they felt before they met. That's why June is crying, he thought, because I didn't keep the promise, I've made her feel lonely again…! So, Lorryn chose to acquiesce to her request, to stay with her for as long as she wants…

"Oh, I'm sorry, June, I've made you suffer from that solitude and misery once again… I'll stay with you for as long as you like, and I promise I'll never upset you again… I promise!" Lorryn caressed her head and tried to calm her down, while he cautiously struggled to free himself from her binding arms, because it hurt when the sensor on her chest was stabbing into him… He wanted June to feel at ease, but he had to keep things from going any further than what he could handle…

After about 10 minutes or so, June finally let go of Lorryn. He scanned around the room and found there is only one bed; it is woven with vines and leaves. So he points out, "Well, June, if you want me to stay with you, you should at least find me somewhere to sleep."

June realized that as well; she thought for a while, and said, "Sorry, but that's the only bed I have here, and there isn't enough room for another one anyway. But I think it should be big enough for the both of us…"

"W…What, are you saying we have to sleep in the same bed?! No way! I mean, we can't do that…!" Lorryn refused point-blank; he shook his head in disbelief of what June just said.

"Huh? What's wrong now? I've seen lots of trainers sleep with their Pokémon; isn't it pretty normal for them?" She couldn't see what was bothering him…

"Yeah, but that's not the point. I mean, you're not even 'my' Pokémon, and, the thing is, you're a girl, and I've never slept with a girl before. It's just… not right!" Lorryn said; he shook his head even harder…

"Oh, come on, Lorryn! Don't you remember, we've always slept together when you were little, so what's the problem now?" June reminded him of the past days…

"But… Oh well, whatever…" Lorryn didn't want to protest further and upset her again, so he accepted the fact. "Just try not to kick me around in your sleep, all right?"

And they did, they spent the night together in June's bed. At first, Lorryn was feeling quite uneasy sleeping with June in the same bed, but as June snuggle up against him and embraced him like a little girl, he actually felt somewhat contented… Lorryn remembered when he was little, June's always been like a kind big sister to him, and he also found her rather otherworldly appearance to be a little intimidating; but now, when he looked at her delicate face in her sound sleep, for the first time he realized how beautifully charming that phantasmal creature beside him really is…

    4: Registration

As June being his fifth Pokémon, Lorryn was finally qualified to enter the upcoming tournament which determines the next Gym leader for the Holon Gym. Lorryn went to register in the foyer of the Gym, but he found there were much more people signing up than he had expected, so it was very crowded, and the queues seemed to be out of shape as some impatient people always tried to push in and fill up every single gap in the middle of the line. Lorryn's temper was about to explode after waiting for over a whole hour in the seemingly never-progressing queue, but he forced himself to stay calm. After another hour or so, Lorryn had finally acquired an entry form, which he needs to take it aside and fill in. So he did; he took it outside of the foyer as it was far too crowded, not to mention it was hot and sticky as well. He read through the form, and it was simple: all he needs to do was fill in his name, address, Trainer ID number and all the Pokémon that are going to participate in the tournament. That didn't take him long, until he reached the "Participating Pokémon" section… He filled in the panels provided as follows:

    1. Species: Armaldo Level: 119 EX: Yes δ-Type: No

    2. Species: Crawdaunt Level: 55 EX: No δ-Type: No

    3. Species: Alakazam Level: 47 EX: No δ-Type: No

    4. Species: Shuppet Level: 33 EX: No δ-Type: No

But he stalled on the last one:

    5. Species: Gardevoir Level: EX: δ-Type:

He just realized that he knew absolutely nothing about June's level and her types, and that he couldn't make anything up because all participating Pokémon must be examined by the officials before entering the tournament. So he squeezed a way to the counters and asked one of the registrars about what he should do if he is unsure about one of his Pokémon's level or type, and the answer he got was simple – take it to a Pokémon Center and have it examined – well, that seemed simple to them, at least…

Having her examined by a Pokémon Center – June's gonna like that! Lorryn thought, as he headed back to June's place. Better give this to her and let her fill it in herself… he considered. And so he found June at her place.

"Hey, June, here's something you got to fill in yourself, because I don't know anything about your type or level… You said you're a Delta-Species, right?" Lorryn asked.

June had a look at the entry form and frowned. "How'd I know my own level? And how am I supposed to find out my types? I know I'm definitely part Steel, but I'm not that sure about my other type – I know those normal Gardevoirs are purely Psychic-type, but I doubt I am one, because I don't know any Psychic attacks…" She shrugged her shoulders…

"Well, I'll just have to take you to a Pokémon Center then, to have you examined…" Lorryn sighed. "I know you probably wouldn't like it, but sorry, I have no other choice."

"Don't be; it's all right, I'll go, because I've made my commitment to help you with the tournament, and I will help you!" June smiled to him. Her kindness and faithfulness have really moved Lorryn, as he'd never expected this much from just a friend; he realized that June is really someone he can call a "true friend"…

Lorryn led June to the nearest Pokémon Center in the residential area. He asked the nurse to have June's type and level identified.

"Oh, what a beautiful Gardevoir you have here! Is she your Pokémon?" The nurse was amazed by June's characteristic appearance.

"Yeah, sort of…" Lorryn nodded at her question.

"Oh, you must've raised her really well in her Kirlia stage, because they are known to grow more beautiful when well-raised and exposed to positive emotions!" She commented. Lorryn was just about to say that it was actually the other way round, that it was June who "raised" him instead of he her, and also that he doubt that she'd been exposed to positive emotions in her Kirlia stage, but he held back, because he didn't want to remind June of her perhaps dreadful past. So all he said was a "thanks".

Anyway, the nurse did a brief scan on June with one of her hand-held devices, and she showed Lorryn the detailed result:

    Species: Gardevoir

    Gender: Female

    Type: Dark/Steel (Delta-Species Category D)

    Level: 193 (EX+93)

    Nature: Impish

    ID: -----/---

    OT: N/A

    Statistics:

    - HP: 583 (12)

    - Attack: 688 (0)

    - Defense: 715 (504)

    - Special Attack: 451 (0)

    - Special Defense: 775 (504)

    - Speed: 372 (0)

Upon seeing her scan results, both Lorryn and June were shrouded in wonderment and disbelief. Lorryn couldn't believe that June was at such a sky-high level, but on the other hand, June took a hit; she couldn't believe that she's always carried the characteristics of a Dark-type. She believed that it was a mistake, so she went up to the counter and asked the nurse, "Um, excuse me, nurse, are you sure that I'm partly Dark-type? Because I don't see anything 'dark' or 'evil' about myself…" She forgot that she was a Pokémon, and she wasn't supposed to talk – she wasn't even supposed to be able to talk.

Predictably, June had only given the nurse another huge surprise. "Wow! Was that really you? Can you really talk?" She asked in her immense astonishment. Her exclamation had also directed the attention of everyone else in the Pokémon Center onto June. Lorryn stood aside and slapped his forehead in frustration… Oh, that's the last damn thing I want! He thought.

"Yeah, it was me, and I can talk…" June realized that she wasn't supposed to talk in the public, even though she can, but as she's already done it, then so be it… "I'm just asking that…"

"Oh, your results, right? They're a hundred percent correct, and you really are a partly Dark-type Pokémon!" The nurse rapidly replied, "Why? There's nothing bad about being a Dark-type, so why don't you like being one? By the way, just look at yourself – you're such a sexy little temptress, and that's more than enough to make you 'evil'!" She gave June a playful grin to show that she was only joking. But June seemed to have taken it literally… She says I'm a temptress huh? Then I'll be one… for Lorryn! She thought, and her fire-red eyes sparkled with an impish idea…

    5: Tournament

The fifth Pokémon on Lorryn's entry form was finally filled in like this:

    5. Species: Gardevoir Level: 193 EX: Yes δ-Type: Dark/Steel (DS Category D)

He returned the form to the registrars, and hence officially entered the upcoming tournament. However, after he went home for some rest, he suddenly realized that he doesn't know any of June's attacks, and that could be a real pain in a match if he doesn't know what attacks to call for. He got out of his bed and sneaked into the Phantom Meadows again, to ask June, incase he forgets about it when he wakes up.

As soon as he arrived at June's cottage at the far end of the forest, rain started pouring down, and it was a thunderstorm, too. So he banged on the door, which was locked, and shouted to ask June to let him in. And she did. It all took at most thirty seconds, but Lorryn's clothes were already soaking wet… "Damn this bloody stupid rain!" He cursed the weather.

June was quite surprised to see him at those hours of the day, not to mention it was raining, too. "What brings you here at this time?" She asked while helping Lorryn to peel off his wet clothes.

"Nothing urgent, but it's pretty important; and I might forget it next morning." Lorryn said as he grabbed a corner of his singlet and dried his hair with it, "I just need you to tell me what attacks you can use, considering you don't know any Psychic attacks." He shivered in a chill.

"Oh, come on; let's worry about my attacks later! We need to get you dried and warmed up first, or you'll catch a cold!" June was concerned as she saw him shivering in his wet clothes. "I don't have a heater here so getting into my bed is probably the best you can do right now. Don't worry; I won't be sleeping until one or two in the morning." She suggested.

"Fine…" Lorryn replied as he slipped into June's bed, stripped of all his wet garments, and wrapped himself with a thick blanket to keep warm. The thunderstorm was still raging on outside, and it wasn't showing any sign of subsiding. "It looks like I'll have to stay here again…" He pointed towards the window.

"Yeah, Lorryn, stay with me and I'll get you warmed up…" June said in an impish tone, as she, too, slipped into the bed, and posited herself beside Lorryn.

"Hey, I thought you weren't sleeping until after midnight!" Lorryn commented.

"I didn't say I was going to sleep, did I?" June replied, while she wound her arms around Lorryn's torso, and rested her chest onto his. "This is got to warm you up! And it's much easier to talk this way, right?" She asked in a suggestive voice that Lorryn had never heard from her.

Not quite understanding June's intention, Lorryn only felt her sensor stabbing into his stomach, and it hurt a little. He complained, "Oh, come on, June, don't act like a little girl! And can you please get your, um, 'thing', off me? Because it, um… Ah, don't worry…" He was just about to say "Because it hurts", but he stopped as he sensed those soft mounds pressing against his chest, right above where it hurt, and they felt really good… So he decided to let her stay like that for a while…

"Um, Lorryn, did you want to know what attacks I can use?" June reminded him of the reason that he came to her place.

"Oh, yeah, I need to know your attacks so I know what to do in the tournament." Lorryn replied, putting his right hand onto her body and caressed her instinctively, which made her blush a little…

"You know I can't use any Psychic attacks, but I can use quite a few other attacks like Brick Break and Shadow Ball, also I know most of Steel-type moves as well, like Iron Defense and Metal Claw. But my best attacks are still Double-Edge and Pursuit; I never hurt myself with Double-Edge, thanks to my Steel-type traits, and I can sometimes stop the opponent from withdrawing their Pokémon with Pursuit…" June gave Lorryn a list of her skills, but she stopped and blushed redder as Lorryn unconsciously wound both his arms around her petite body, and pulled her even closer onto his chest, and spontaneously took pleasure in the enchanting sensation of her tender chest and the aura of warmth around her body… "Oh, Lorryn, you naughty boy…!" June snapped him out of it as she deliberately stabbed him with her sensor.

"Ouch!" Lorryn realized what he was doing; some things are just so easily done when you're having such a cute girl by your side… "Oh, I'm sorry, June!" He quickly apologized, "I didn't realize what I was doing…" Damn! He thought, lucky she's a Gardevoir… I don't know what could've happened if she was a "real" girl; still, she felt so good, and the strange thing is that she felt so soft and warm even though she's a Steel-type – she's not like one at all! The image of a Steel-type in Lorryn's mind was something like a Metagross or a Steelix.

"Oh, don't be sorry, 'cuz you liked it, didn't you? I know you did…" June gave him a playful grin.

"Come on! It was instinctual, and you're the one who's clinging onto me in the first place…" Lorryn was a little embarrassed, but he tried not to let it show. "Anyway, it's not my fault that you're so cute..." He commented.

"Do you really think I'm cute?" June was excited upon hearing Lorryn's comment.

"Yeah, you are quite cute when I look at you now, although I was actually afraid of you when I first saw you. Anyway, that was ages ago…" Lorryn replied.

"Then, do you… um, love me?" June came up with such a surprise question…

Lorryn was dazed as he heard June's unexpected question coming right out of the blue. Oh my goodness, this is just wrong! He thought, what the heck is going on? What is she thinking…? He didn't know what to answer, or how to react. But as he looked back to the past, when June was like nothing but a big sister to him, her question didn't seem to surprising anymore… "Yes, I do love you, June; you're the most important individual in my life! I've always looked at you as my big sister, for how you were so kind and caring, and you even helped me to train my Anorith and make it evolve into an Armaldo, so it can protect me from those other Delta-Species. I know I'm not a little kid anymore, and I stopped treating you like a big sister, but you'll always be my best friend…" Lorryn answered; he didn't want to upset June by saying no, but at the same time he didn't want to guide things in a wrong way – after all, he is an elf and she is a Gardevoir…

June was a little disappointed to hear Lorryn's answer, simply because it wasn't what she was expecting, but she also felt satisfied, for that he truly loves her, as a sister and the best friend. "Thanks, Lorryn; I love you, too…" She rested her head onto his shoulder. It's better to let things stay this way, she thought, it's never supposed to happen anyway, because we're indeed different after all…

A few days later, the tournament had finally started. There were exactly 256 trainers participating – mostly lab workers and newbies, just as Chris said. After the two-on-two preliminary screening, one in four will remain. Although Lorryn didn't expect that many people competing for just the position of the local Gym leader, he successfully passed the screening with his Armaldo alone and made into the first round, in which another one in four will go on to the quarterfinals. But as he registered his team of three for the first round, which are his Armaldo, Crawdaunt and Shuppet, the officials required every participant's Pokémon to be examined for legitimacy and special conditions, because they have found some trainers using rental Pokémon and Pokémon borrowed from their friends, and some were even infected by the PokéRus, which might spread during battles. They used the same device as the one the nurse used in the Pokémon Center, and they did the scanning of all of Lorryn's Pokémon.

    The first one was Armaldo:

    Species: Armaldo

    Gender: Male

    Type: Rock/Bug

And Alakazam, which he trained a little, just before the tournament:

And then Shuppet, which also had some training:

    Species: Shuppet

    Nature: Jolly

    ID: 65535/004

    - Speed: 58 (64)

"Where's your fifth Pokémon, Lorryn Bruonstud?" The examiner demanded.

"Right here," Lorryn answered, pointing at June, who was standing by his side, "I never caught her in a Poké-Ball, so you can just check her like this."

"Hmm, strange…" The examiner scanned June's data, and his facial expression changed almost immediately. "What the heck? Are you entering a Pokémon without a Trainer ID number?" He demanded.

"Well, I told you I never 'caught' her, so how could she have a Trainer ID number?" Lorryn replied matter-of-factly.

"But you know you cannot enter a wild Pokémon in a tournament, whether it's official or not…" The examiner shook his head and frowned.

"Hey, don't call me a 'wild Pokémon'!" June gave him a stark glare with disgust, "I'm his friend, so by the official rules I am eligible to participate as a member in his team! Is there anything else?" She was clearly annoyed by his attitude.

"Uh, no… Yeah, I mean, nothing. You can enter now…" The examiner was too astonished to hear June talk, which, again, attracted just about everyone's attention…

"Thank you." Lorryn responded ironically. He turned to June and grumbled, "June, how many times do I have to tell you not to talk so loud in the public? I don't want everyone to stare at us…"

"Don't worry! They all think I'm a Psychic-type, and all Psychic-types can at least use telepathy to communicate with people, so it's all right if I don't talk too much." June replied with a playful smile.

"Oh, whatever…" Lorryn shrugged his shoulders; he could find nothing more to say.

The first round began. Lorryn was facing Victor, a researcher from the Holon Research Institute, who had a Machoke, a Linoone and an Altaria on his team. Lorryn started the match with his Shuppet, and Victor with his Machoke. It looked like Lorryn's Shuppet had a huge type advantage, because Machoke is unable to use any of its Fighting-type attacks to hurt it, so Lorryn called for a direct Shadow Ball attack.

Victor ordered Machoke to avoid the Shadow Ball with its Double Team, and it was successful. Then, Victor countered with a Flamethrower, which was totally unexpected by Lorryn; he had no time to think, so he could only call for a counterattack with Night Shade. The two projectiles collided in midair, and set off an explosion, which knocked out both Pokémon.

Victor's next Pokémon was his Altaria, which looked incredibly strong. Lorryn wanted to save his Armaldo for last, so he sent out Crawdaunt.

"Altaria, Sky Attack!" Victor ordered, and his Altaria glowed bright red with an aura of flame.

Lorryn had never seen a Sky Attack before, so he had no idea how it works or how strong it is, but by the looks of it, it must be an extremely strong attack. So he ordered Crawdaunt to use Bubble Beam to mess it up.

Crawdaunt fired a volley of explosive bubbles into midair and some hit Altaria, but they were not enough to mess up its Sky Attack, so Altaria finished charging and dived straight at Crawdaunt.

"Think you can beat Altaria with just a Bubble Beam huh? Well, too bad!" Victor commented.

"It's not over yet! Claws – use Guillotine when it comes down!" Lorryn remained calm.

As Altaria charged into Crawdaunt, Crawdaunt raised its right claw and jumped up; it grabbed hold of Altaria's neck and slammed it into the ground with full force for a one hit knock out. So it gained Lorryn an advantage of having two Pokémon against Victor's last one.

"Go, Linoone!" Victor launched his Poké-Ball, and the Linoone streamed out. Linoone is quite a rare sight on the island of Holon, and Lorryn had absolutely no idea what type it is or what moves it is capable of performing. So he decided to let Crawdaunt stay in and check out Linoone's moves.

"Hey, Lorryn," June shouted from the spectator seats, "watch out for Linoone's speed attacks; it's one of the fastest Pokémon out there! And I think you should switch to your Armaldo, because it's resistant to Linoone's attacks!" She advised him, and of course, at the same time attracted every spectator's attention, once again!

"Thanks, June! But I think I'm all right with Claws!" Lorryn shouted back; he was too busy battling to notice the spectators. He returned to the battle, "Claws – use Bubble Beam!"

Crawdaunt fired a volley of bubbles towards Linoone, attempting to reduce its speed, but Linoone was way too fast for it; it jumped up before any of the bubbles hit it.

"Now, use Head-butt!" Victor ordered. Linoone shot straight down like a bullet towards Crawdaunt; Lorryn knew that Guillotine isn't going to work this time, so he had to risk another Bubble Beam. However, he failed, as Linoone was far too fast for Crawdaunt to counterattack; it crushed Crawdaunt into the ground before it had the chance to aim its Bubble Beam.

Damn! This isn't looking good! Lorryn thought; it is indeed too fast! I'll have to tire it out first before switching to Blade… So he ordered Crawdaunt to use Harden and Protect on every incoming attack from Linoone instead of countering, and that worked to some success, because Crawdaunt's crust had become so hard that each direct attack from Linoone ended up hurting itself more than it did Crawdaunt, not to mention that Crawdaunt's Shell Armor makes it impossible for anyone to land a critical hit on it.

Victor, however, didn't seem worried seeing his Linoone's ultimate Extreme-speed failed to do any damage to Crawdaunt, and that it was nearly tired out. He knew that Lorryn was probably going to attack soon, so he ordered Linoone to stay evasive instead of offensive.

"Now, Claws – use Sludge Bomb; it's worn out!" Lorryn finally decided to attack.

"It's our chance, Linoone; use Thunderbolt!" Victor shouted.

Crawdaunt threw a barrage of Sludge Bombs all over the stadium, but none of them landed a direct hit onto Linoone, which then leaped up and charged for a Thunderbolt and fired it at Crawdaunt. Crawdaunt, being a part Water-type, is weak to electric attacks, so it took some serious damage and became paralyzed. Lorryn had to make a switch. He sent out his Armaldo. "Blade, use Rock Blast!" He ordered.

"Linoone, Water Pulse," Victor called for a counterattack that is aimed at Armaldo's main weakness. "And hit it from above!"

Linoone, again, leaped up to avoid the hail of rocks from Armaldo, and it charged for a Water Pulse in midair. But just as it was about to fire the Water Pulse, Armaldo realized what it was trying to do and lunged up with a forceful beat of its giant plates; it knocked Linoone down with one clean hit from its Aerial Ace, and then finished it off with another direct hit from Iron Tail.

It was a long battle, but the victory still belonged to Lorryn and his Armaldo, and that enabled him to go onto the quarterfinals, in which only the top sixteen trainers that have won every match so far will compete…

    6: Delta Appeal

"You know, Lorryn, if you'd used your Armaldo in the beginning, you'd won the match in no time…" June commented on their way back home, after the match with Victor.

"Yeah, probably," Lorryn said, "but it'll eventually get worn out though…"

"No way," June retaliated, "your Armaldo is an EX and it's twice as strong as all his Pokémon put together!"

"Well, it is an EX all right, but I doubt that it's twice as strong as all his put together…" Lorryn responds, "It just got past the level-100 mark, unlike you – you'd probably be twice as strong as all mine put together! Lucky you're on my side…"

June blushed a little upon hearing his somewhat flattering remark, but she tried not to let it show by lowering her head and staring at the panels of her skirt. "You really should put more trust into you Pokémon, you know…" She mumbled, "And who says I'm that good? A Fighting-type will beat me up in a flash, thanks to my weird types…"

"Speak of that, June – you really should learn at least one Psychic-type attack; it's for your own good, because it'll counter your main weakness." Lorryn suggested, "By the way, I might just have what you need in my shop – a TM-29! I'll go and check later."

"What's a TM-29?" June asked; she had never heard of those things known as Technical Machines before. "It is some sort of a drug? If so, then please forget it; I'm not taking drugs to cover up my own weaknesses – it's just cheating!" She suddenly became serious, which was unlike the playful and impish, usual her…

"Oh, come on, June! Haven't you heard of the Technical Machines before? They're not drugs; they're special machines that teach certain skills to compatible Pokémon. They won't hurt or anything, so don't worry." Lorryn explained it to her. "The one you want is a TM-29. It teaches you the strongest Psychic-type move – the Psychokinesis attack. If you can use that, then Fighting-types won't stand in your way any longer!"

"Um, well… I think I'll give it a try… But are you sure I'm compatible with that machine?" June wavered.

"Well, to be honest with you, I have absolutely no idea. But from what I know, all Gardevoirs should learn that attack in their Kirlia stage, and most Dark-types can also learn it using the TM-29, so I think you shouldn't have any problem with it." Lorryn answered optimistically.

"Yeah, okay…" June agrees, however, she was still not sure whether she wanted to learn an attack using a TM, as a "machine" in her mind was something like those metal beasts in factories…

June followed Lorryn back to his store. Lorryn searched the storage for that TM-29 he talked about, and he found it in an old TM case, along with a number of other TM's that he taught to his other Pokémon, and those that were incompatible with them. June found out that a TM is actually a round disc like those that are used to store data, but it is used in a different way, and that removed the fear in her mind about the concept of "machines"; actually, she was wondering why they were even called "machines", but she didn't ask, because she knew that Lorryn wouldn't have any idea, either.

Lorryn took out another hand-held device known as the "TAD" – Technical Activation Device. It is used to load and teach TM's to compatible Pokémon, and it also identifies which Pokémon are compatible with the loaded TM, and which are not. He loaded the TM-29 into the TAD, and it displayed on its screen:

    Loaded TM-29 (PSYCHOKINESIS)

    Scanning Party Pokémon… … … Found: 4

    ARMALDO (ROCK/BUG) – NOT ABLE

    CRAWDAUNT (WATER/DARK) – NOT ABLE

    ALAKAZAM (PSYCHIC) – LEARNED

    SHUPPET (GHOST) – ABLE

    Scanning Pokémon within perimeter… … … Found: 1

UNIDENTIFIED (DARK/STEEL) – OPTIONS: 1. Auto Identification; 2. Input genetic data.

Lorryn chose option 1 for a start, and it jumped to the next screen:

    Initiating Auto Identification process… … … Success

Please point the IR scanner to the Pokémon to be identified.

He followed the instructions on the screen and pointed the TAD towards June. The screen on the TAD went black for a little while, and then came back to the Auto Identification screen with an error message saying:

    Auto Identification failed.

Error 1024: Invalid Pokémon type match; no Pokémon with type (DARK/STEEL) found in database.

    Available options:

    1. Re-scan

    2. Manual input Pokémon species

    3. Manual input Pokémon genetic data

Of course this thing's not gonna recognize any Delta-Species… Lorryn thought, I guess I'll have to enter the species myself… He chose option 2 and entered Gardevoir as the species, assuming that would bypass its type-checking procedure. And it did; he came to some success while fiddling with the "manual overriding procedure" under those "expert options" in his TAD. He re-scanned "Pokémon within perimeter", and now the "UNIDENTIFIED (DARK/STEEL)" finally came up as "GARDEVOIR δ (PSYCHIC/STEEL)"…

"It looks like you'll have to update its software, Lorryn!" Someone treaded into the store; it was Chris, and he had been watching Lorryn with his TAD for some time through the window.

"Oh, Chris, it's you…" Lorryn was still focused on his TAD. "Can't you see the 'closed' sign on the door?"

"Yes, I saw that. That's why I've been watching you through the window, and you really make me laugh, Lorryn!" Chris said. "Your TAD is too outdated to recognize those weird Delta-Species, forcing it to recognize them won't do you any good, because its database is too limited."

"I know! It's not like I know how to update its database, and I can't be bothered, I ain't got any Delta-Species except June anyway. So no point updating it just to teach her the TM-29, that is, if I can work out if she's compatible…" Lorryn said; he was getting a little frustrated with that thing.

"Hah, TM-29, are you saying that your little Gardy cutie doesn't even know the 'Psychic' attack? How strange… even for a Delta." Chris remarked. "Here, load your TM on mine for now; it's updated enough to recognize those newer Deltas. And I'll take yours to the lab and get it updated. Oh, and your PokéDex as well, if you don't mind." He offered Lorryn his TAD, which looked exactly the same as Lorryn's one, but has a newer database.

"Yeah, okay. Thanks for that…" Lorryn loaded his TM-29 onto Chris' TAD, and gave him his one and the PokéDex to have them updated.

"Um… are you sure it's worth the trouble just for me?" June asked Lorryn, quietly; she felt a little uneasy.

"Nah, it's okay, it only takes a few seconds, my little cutie!" Chris answered her with a mocking smile.

"Hey mate, she was asking me, not you! And can you please show her at least some respect? She's the one who brought me up; she's like my big sister, you know… And being a Delta-Species ain't that easy for her!" Lorryn sounded annoyed with the way Chris treated June. And he turned to June, and said, "It's all right, my PokéDex is a bit long in the tooth anyway, so it's time I had it upgraded."

"Oh, sorry, Gardy – what's your name again? Oh right, June! Sorry, June…" Chris apologized, only because Lorryn made him to. "Anyway, Lorryn, use my TAD for now, and I'll get your stuff upgraded. Come meet me in the lab tomorrow lunch time, okay? You know where I work, so laters, I got to go now." He went back to the Institute.

All their words had made June blush. "Stop treating me as if I'm a little girl, please! I'm too old for that…" She pulled Lorryn's sleeve and said, "By the way, does that TM thing work on me at all?"

"I'm not sure; his software is different from mine, so I got to work out how to actually use it first…" Lorryn was again absorbed in the TAD, and he finally got his TM-29 booted into that familiar screen. He did another scan of "Pokémon within perimeter", and it finally correctly identified June as "GARDEVOIR δ (DARK/STEEL)", however, a "NOT ABLE" was displayed next to it…

"Well, does that mean I can't use that TM…?" June saw the screen, and lowered her voice. "Sorry if I've wasted your time…" She began to feel bad about all that trouble Lorryn's been through just to teach her the Psychokinesis attack…

"No, you can't, I'm afraid, not the TM-29 anyway…" Lorryn shrugged his shoulders with a forced smile on his face. "But, before you feel that you've wasted my time, let's try out some other TM's I've got here. This machine can identify you, so I don't see why not to!"

    "Um… Okay… If you like…"

"Hey June, here's something you might like to learn!" Lorryn pulled out another TM from his TM case; it was a black disc, and it has a white "TM-49" printed on the surface.

"What is it?" June bent over and had a closer look at it; she didn't really like the look of that disc considering it is black… In comparison, that TM-29 Lorryn put away has an attractive fuchsia color. "Is it some sort of Dark-type attack? If that's the case, then I'll say no; it's not like I'm happy with my Dark-type traits…"

"Well, it's not exactly an attack, but it's a Dark-type technique all right…" Lorryn replied, "It's called Snatch; it allows you to steal the beneficial effects of your opponent's moves before they can have it, you know what I mean? For example, if you're up against a Scyther and it uses Swords Dance, you can Snatch its effect, so you get the boost in attack power, but the Scyther doesn't. So, in short, your opponent does the work, you get the benefit." He explained.

"Um… I really don't like the sound of it… Got any others?" June shook her head lightly to show her disapproval.

"Yeah, I got heaps, like sixty or seventy, but some you're definitely incompatible with, like Flamethrower and Blizzard, and you wouldn't want Body Slam either – you're not big enough for that; it's made for Snorlax and likes…" Lorryn commented as he searched through his collection of TM's. "Oh, here's another good one for you!" He pulled out another black disc with a "TM-12" on it.

"Another black one - what is it this time?" June asked.

"It's called Taunt. Use this to stop your opponent from defending by forcing it to use attacking moves, so it leaves itself vulnerable. You've got excellent defenses, so it should suit you fine." Lorryn suggested.

"I like the idea of it, but let's look at some of the others first." June showed a little interest in the TM-12.

They continued to explore Lorryn's TM case, and Lorryn pulled out yet another black disc, and he recommended it to June.

"Hey, if you like the TM-12, you'll need this one for it to work even better!" He was quite excited to find that he actually had a TM-41 in there.

June wasn't that psyched at all; she never liked anything black, or dark. "Oh, come on, Lorryn! Can you stop looking especially for those black ones? You know I don't like them, and you've got heaps of others in there…" She complained.

"Wait, you've got to learn this one!" He held the TM-41 in his hand and shook it eagerly before June's face. "It's Torment; it prevents your opponent from using the same move twice. If you use Taunt, and then Torment, you're sure to badly mess up your opponent's strategies…" He lectured enthusiastically.

"Oh, come on! You haven't had much battling experience, have you? Or you're really an idealist!" June shut him out of his "strategy talk".

"Why? Don't you think it's gonna work?" Lorryn was puzzled by her response.

"Don't you realize, if I use Taunt on my opponent, they'll beat me up with their strongest attack before I can seal it with Torment; so I might as well use Swagger on a mad Primeape!" She explained, "And if I use Torment first, their trainer will probably call for a defensive or stat-boosting move, or they'll simply switch Pokémon to cancel its effect, if they're allowed to. So, what I'm saying is, those so-called 'move combos' only work under ideal conditions, not every time!" She expressed her opinion towards Lorryn's strategies.

It was clear that June is an anti-strategist who'd like to compete with their true abilities instead of playing tricks to catch their opponents off guard. Maybe that was how she trained herself to such a high level over the years, because it seems that strategists' Pokémon are generally at lower levels than those of the antis', as they gain relatively less battling experience over time.

At last, June fell before Lorryn's constant persuasion and agreed to learn the three TM's he suggested, not because they're that useful or tempting, but she always wanted Lorryn to be happy, and learning new techniques could do her no harm anyway… To his surprise, June really demanded Lorryn to teach her the Aerial Ace attack via TM-40, as she said that would be sufficient to counter Fighting-types. And surprisingly enough, the TAD actually said that she was compatible with the TM-40.

It was 10 o'clock already when they finished their TM business, and it takes at least an hour to get back to June's place in the forest from Lorryn's store, so Lorryn suggested that June stays there for the night in his flat above the store. June agreed; she had never been in his flat before, and she always wanted to check it out. There they had the same problem which was no longer a problem – Lorryn had only one single bed as well, but as they had already used to sleeping with each other, they didn't mention anything about it. Lorryn was glad that he could have a warm night with June by his side, considering it can get pretty cold at night; June, on the other hand, treated this as an opportunity to get even closer to Lorryn, and another impish idea flashed in her head…

After they both had a wash and went inside the bed, with Lorryn next to the wall and June on his side, Lorryn's natural instincts told him to hug June closer, just for warmth; however, June took it as an act of love… She wound her arms around his torso, and literally stuck her petite body onto his. Carefully avoiding stabbing him with her sensor, she rubbed her tender chest onto his body… "Do you want me to warm you up a little more?" She asked in a light and dreamy voice; she was unsure of whether Lorryn was awake or not.

"Huh…? What was that, June…?" He was half asleep, and was awakened by her…

"Um…" June blushed, "just want to know if you feel cold… if you do, I can warm you up a little more…"

"Huh…? Cold – no, how could I be cold when you're next to me?" He was regaining consciousness… and realizing what June was doing at around his chest… He was shocked by her astonishing actions, "What the…? What the heck are you doing, June? Come on, this is just wrong! You're at most a sister to me, and we can't do that…"

He was cut off by June as she gently placed her hand onto his lips and pressed them. She then wound her loving arms around his neck, and gave him a gentle kiss on the cheek, "I love you, Lorryn…" she whispered in a soft and seducing tone…

Lorryn forced himself to calm down, and tried to fall back to sleep; he knew that this time, June's "I love you" meant something very different than that she always said to him when he was young. And they both knew that their love had gone far beyond that of a Pokémon and its trainer, or that of a sister and her brother… It was something that is absolutely natural but would appear completely immoral…

He couldn't sleep; his heart was pounding hard in his chest, so hard that it was clearly audible. He knew that he certainly cannot let such a relationship of theirs progress any further, simply because it was "just wrong". However, he didn't want to upset June, because he knew that he loved her dearly, too… He slowly opened his eyes again, and gazed at that fascinating feminine figure that was almost fused with his body; he realized how desirable she really is, and that irresistible charm accelerated his heart rate even more… He had never been so close to a female before, and it was hard for him to bear the fact that the first female that he'd been so close to was none other than the Gardevoir that he'd always seen as a sister; he wished all this was but a warped dream which he could soon awaken from, he wished that the morning sun should free him from this gnarled reality, yet he desired for more of her soft touch and her tender body…

He realized that it was never a dream, and it could never be a dream, however, it is yet for him to realize that his first love is not only a Delta-Species, it is a figure of phantasm – an exile of this world…
