In Pokemon Yellow, you are forced to have Pikachu as your starter. Unfortunately, the first gym is all Rock/Ground types, and Electric doesn't effect ground.

I caught a Caterpie and trained it to a Butterfree. I also trained a Nidoran-M and taught it Double Kick. Nidoran-M was mostly backup.

Pretty sure Butterfree was also how I did it. Not a whole lot of choices to pick from for the first gym. Brock not actually having any Rock type attacks+Confusion being a special attack makes it an ok pick.

Ol' reliable: Nidoran (M) at level 12 so that it learns double kick. This is exclusive to yellow as in R/B both Nidorans learn double kick at like level 40. My most recent run of yellow I actually decided to use butterfree for the first time.

A combination of Butterfree's Confusion, Mankey's Low Kick, and Nidorina's Double Kick.

Oh geez. Lots of Potions and Quick Attack spam. It was exhausting each time lol. Sometimes I would get a Butterfree with Confusion, but that wasn't often since it took a little bit to evolve it and I was lazy.

I would always catch a Mankey on Route 22, get it to at least Level 9 to teach it Low Kick and then just keep spamming that until I beat Brock.
