How make a "choosing starter" event like in 4&5 Gen?

So I'm new to the page and I'm currently working on a Pokemon game. So straight to the question what I mean is like in the 4 and 5 gen Pokemon games when the player gets to choose his starter it shows like a picture and that picture shows the 3 pokeballs. With that the player gets to show between the 3 Pokemon however it also shows the cursor or the selection symbol(sorry if I'm not being clear on that but I mean like it shows the arrow of the current pokeball you are looking at). So I want to know how can I do this? (I wish it doesn't have to do with scripting even though I think that's the highest possibility but either way tell me any way I can do this)

Thanks Man I was really desperate to get this thing. I really really appreciate this. By the way can this one be used to choose the gender of the player or is there another script for that and by that I mean choosing the gender by using pictures instead of using show choices.

No this can't be used to choose genders. I know there's a script for that somewhere but I don't know where it is.
