Why does she always have to be so vain? I'm not talking about her hotheadedness or her fiery attitude. I love those qualities she has.

Misty is one of my favorite female characters(and she is definitly one of the funniest), but I could never get over the fact that she's only accepting of Pokemon that she considers beautiful or cute.

Take Caterpie for example. She refuses to treat the little guy with any respect until it evolved into a beautiful Butterfree.

..and we all know how much she couldn't stand that Psyduck. She even tried to smash a bicycle over it's head when it wouldn't use confusion. XD Despite how loyal it was to her and how many times it saved her lil butt, she continued to act as if it was just a humiliation and she constantly tried to change it(dumped it at a shady breeding center and beauty salon)

The only time she showed it any respect was when she thought it had evolved into Golduck.

The episode "Pokemon Fashion Flash" also comes to mind(not a very good ep for Misty).

So what do you think? Does she deserve more credit for her actions here or is this a side of Misty you dislike as well?

Misty was alright.

She's one of the original cast girls. So I give her some respect.

LOL! people used to say I was like Misty from pokemon. Lol, because of my personality. (which I think is kinda true) But, it was alot of my friends backwhen I was like 5 or 6. O-o

umm... not really, she even helped pokemon that WEREN'T cute even BY her standards. Take Heracross for example. And I don't see how liking pokemon for their cuteness is the same as vanity, it may be shallow, yes, but it's not the same thing as vanity.

Take Caterpie for example. She refuses to treat the little guy with any respect until it evolved into a beautiful Butterfree.

I think that was because she still had a huge fear of bug types of them, but Caterpie changed that a little (I won't say a lot, since, it would have completely eliminated her phobia if it was a lot, which wasn't what it did.)

..and we all know how much she couldn't stand that Psyduck. She even tried to smash a bicycle over it's head when it wouldn't use confusion. sigh... Look, she also kept Psyduck even though she could have released it. Heck, in the trading episode, she kept her psyduck, even though it would have been a perfect opportunity. Heck, she also realized that leaving Psyduck at the Stealing center CB were running was a big mistake, and even made up for it to psyduck by allowing it to sneak in and recover Todds camera. Besides, Ash felt that Charizard was a humiliation as well, and he even gets a bit angered at him as well.

The only time she showed it any respect was when she thought it had evolved into Golduck.

I already argued the times she showed respect for it.

The episode "Pokemon Fashion Flash" also comes to mind(not a very good ep for Misty).

well, ok, you do have a point there, but I don't think that she thought it was that good, especially later on.

So what do you think? Does she deserve more credit for her actions here or is this a side of Misty you dislike as well?

Sigh... why are you thinking that Misty was vain? Almost all of those examples aren't a sign of Vanity. Now if she was admiring herself in a mirror, made a huge fuss about bedhead, takes it as far as insulting another persons hairstyle, liked doing scandalous things in public, and was pretty much concerned about her Physical Beauty 24/7, then yeah, I'd agree with you there (since that's the only TRUE definition of Vanity.). In other words, she would have to act like Dawn or even May to be truly vain (May stopped to look at herself in a mirror, which nearly sent Ash to the hospital, in "The Bicker, The Better". Plus, she was seen gladly stripping on the beach on "Brave the Wave". and others.)

The only example that could actually BE used for Vanity was her makeover, which even THAT was debatable, since she could have been trying to hide her feeling about it, but then decided to unveil them when she discovered that those Salon people were Team Rocket.

Remember the Koga episode, He offered Misty a trede but she did not trade her weak Psyduck for a strong Venomoth. The way she love Psyduck is different, she acts really redheaded cause the Psyduck is dim-witted. But did you remember when she appeared back in the Togetic episodes, she got more mature. Well what makes her mature if you ask, I say Togepi, Togepi made her learnt how to be more patient. So why she didn't respect Caterpie ,she has afraid for bugs you should know that! Plus it's Ash who made her to accept the Butterfree.

misty thinks shes so beatiful that shes only good enough for cute pokemon like pikachu.i dont like her because she does not like ugly pokemon whats up with that.shes only funny on pokemon abridged series where she is weird or cuckoo.

Could you elaborate on that further? Heh. I'm intrigued.

Anyway, I always saw it as a double standard of her "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" outlook. And, as many have pointed out, she's outgrown it. Of the trio, Dawn seems to be the most vain, given her issues with her hair and preening it. Heh.

I respect Misty. I mean, she's the reason why I like pokemon today. Not all her pokemon are cute, she now has a Gyarados thats pretty awesome ^.^; But, every character has there flaws. I don't know why people have to hate on Misty, she was the one with Brock who witnessed Ash's very BEGINNING of his journey to becoming 'the pokemon master'

I see what your saying and you bring up some valid points. Thanks for restoring a little bit of my faith in Misty.

I still think she's a little biased about her Pokemon though, but everyone has their own set of flaws, I guess(and that is what makes them interesting and realisitc).

..and I still think that mistreating someone or something(or treating them differently) based on looks is a little worse than complaining about bed-hair. Maybe Vain isn't the correct term... but I dunno. ^^;

It's kind of like dissing your dorky/nerdy friend in front others out of embarrassment, I guess. It's not as if you don't care about your friend, you just let your emotions get the best of you.

Was she afraid of Heracross the first time she saw it? I haven't seen that ep in so long.

I respect Misty. I mean, she's the reason why I like pokemon today. Not all her pokemon are cute, she now has a Gyarados thats pretty awesome ^.^; But, every character has there flaws. Well I don't know about that, Misty thought Tentacruel was gorgeous. She may consider Gyarados beautiful and it's definitely not an embarrassment to her team.

I wasn't hating her though. Like I said, she's one of my favorite characters(I even wanted to be just like her when I was 9 yrs old). I just wanted some clarification on that and was interested in hearing what other's thought of it. Debating is a good way to develop one's opinions, at least I think so.

To the childish comments above(no offense), this isn't an anti-Misty thread. Please bring up valid reasons why you feel the way you do.

Well, I think Misty is a little to haet-blooded sometimes, but she's my fav. Chara and she had shown her good heard more than only one time. Remember the second movie! Or this one episode on the orange-leage islands when this Gymleader(I only remember his Geman Name "Rudy") want's her to stay with him. Please don't see only the bad Sites.:)

I really like Misty. She's a better Gym Leader than her sisters. Way better. I could say she's the kind of person who would risk her life for the safety of others.
In the Cerulean Blues Episode, the Gyarados that was trapped in the cage was being attacked by the Tentacruel with Poison Sting. She willingly, went to the Gyarados and took the Poison Sting shots to protect the Gyarados.

Some people hate Misty because she's afraid of Bug Pokemon. I believe that's a stupid reason to hate her. I mean, people... have their own likes and dislikes. That's what makes everyone unique.

misty thinks shes so beatiful that shes only good enough for cute pokemon like pikachu.i dont like her because she does not like ugly pokemon whats up with that.shes only funny on pokemon abridged series where she is weird or cuckoo.

She doesn't like ugly pokemon? I didn't know that. Because I always thought Gyarados was an ugly Pokemon. But then again, it's a Water-type so she would like it. And anyway, what's up with her not liking ugly pokemon? I mean many people don't like ugly pokemon. I don't like ugly pokemon. Some of my friends don't like ugly pokemon. Like I said, people have their likes and dislikes.
You can't hate a person just because he/she doesn't like this or that. There must be another reason why you don't like Misty.

I could never dislike any side of Misty. That would be saying to hate a side of myself.

I can agree with you that she can be somewhat vain but I know Misty wouldn't trade Psyduck away for the world. It's already known that these two have a bond, and sure, she does say so-and-so water pokemon is adorable; it's in her nature. She's a water pokemon lover so of course she's going to give them some more attention. At least she respects all sorts of pokemon [with the exception of bugs. Not like I blame the girl. xD] Also, Misty was the first one to praise Psyduck in Princess VS Princess when he won and The Perfect Match for beating Ash. I think that shows love to the duck. :3 there is a thing called tough love, you know. *wink*

She's come to be mature and accepting of others. At first in the early episodes, it's apparent that she clearly hated bug pokemon. I think it was because of her influence within her family. I mean, come one, when all of your guardians [or in this case, sisters] are all extremely vain, she had to get some as well. I would call Daisy, Violet, and Lily as vain; they care so much more for their beauty than anything else. Misty was the only one who went out of the box. She could have decided to be that way as well, but she didn't. She wanted to be different, and that's something I admired about her always.

I think it took her some time to realize that what's inside counts more than the outside. Again, due to being raised as the runt and being overshadowed by her sisters shows that she was insecured when it came to beauty. The School of Hard Knocks [with her comment about her beauties only skin deep] pretty much along with Ash Catches a Pokemon [when Misty stated how she's never met anyone like Ash before] showed me that she isn't vain at all. Even with Tentacool and Tentacruel she pretty much went out to go talk some sense into the pokemon that was destroying everything in its' path. If she was vain, then she wouldn't have gave a crap about it, really. xD

Misty's the kind of person to put others first before herself. She's always willing to state her opinion no matter how harsh it is. I think of her as a very brave and strong person to have handled such things as leaving her friends behind in Gotta Catch Ya Later, getting over her fear of Gyarados, and to love her pokemon. :3

Great characteranalysis...I'm really speachless!O.o
But that "Princess VS Princess" episode...I don't like it. Because in this one Misty is so...ugly...oooh, please don't kill me for this, I just can't find an other word to discribe it.
I like "The Ghost of Maidens Peak" when Misty comes up to ask Ash for a dance. She was so sweetlooking in her kimono with open hair...
And "For Crying Out Loud" Misty rescue Marill and hold it in her arms...>.<
