When I went to the Pokemon Rocks America I traded with a guy for a shiney magmar. The weird thing is that some of his pokemon were in japanese. My magmar's name is written in a weird font. Are these pokemon actually imported?

They could easily have been. Different language Game Boys can trade with each other, and the Magmar you received could easily have been from a Japanese Game Boy. Either that or he's used a cheating device to nickname his Pokemon with Japanese text. But... yeah... it'll probably be a real Magmar. ^_^

Gameboys have been designed to play ANY games. Whether it's a game from Japan or from China it WILL work. In other words the gameboy doesn't select the language it's the game. The game cartridge was probably a Japanese one.
