Is it necessary?

Ooh, I hope this is in the right place... sorry for the uncreative title, I don't know what to put..

So, I had a thought while listening to music earlier...

I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are on celebrities. Do you believe it's necessary for them to be placed up above people of our society as more important? Do you think whatever has made them famous is worth giving them luxury treatment? What's your thoughts on all of the fandom towards certain celebrities?

Personally, I-I do not feel like all of the above is necessary. Everyone in this world has something amazing about them, and not everybody gets famous. I heard a man yesterday singing and playing guitar so wondrously... he played so well that before I checked out where the music was coming from, I thought it was the radio or something... He was incredible. He's not famous.

I understand that all of the celebrities were discovered... and that they came out in the open themselves to be discovered. However, I feel as though celebrities are given too much emphasis. Whether it be through their looks, or their talents, I feel like it gets super ridiculous sometimes...

Don't get me wrong, I do feel a talent should be seen... but I don't feel it should be exploited so heavily. I've seen such incredible talent and skill throughout my life that makes me wonder what the point of celebrities even is. They are talented people, but so are many other people that don't get rewarded for their amazing abilities. Rewarding and exploiting a talent every chance there is to me is a bit over-the-top. We all have a talent... it's really not that glorious or unique.

I-I hope I haven't gone too far in saying that... But what do you think?

    Yeah, hey, me too!

Well, I have different opinions based on what kind of celebrity we're talking about.

About the people in sports (and movies), they're paid waaaay too much. I think that they should be paid about as much as an average employee (around $100,000) and additional based on their skill, since that way they can be even better entertainment for those who like them. (Oh, on a different note, I think sports event/movie tickets are way too expensive, no?)

As for music, they're paid based on how many people like them. Since everybody will always have different tastes, I think that nobody should judge them, but go ahead and judge their fans because they're the ones that pay the artist.

The real people for the music who should be paid less are the record labels. They get so much money, but who really cares about them? They should give more of the money to the artists so they can be motivated to make even better music.

Yes, I believe it is necessary. If we don't have celebrities in the public eye, what does the rest of the world aspire to become? If you take away celebrities you take away the world's shining light and suddenly we become a swirling vortex of chaos.

XD Victini... You do sound timid.

Anyway! I hate all the celebrity gossip. I honestly don't care about what they do next that only makes them seem more fake. It does suck that people who seem to have amazing talent never get famous. But thats only refering to people on media like movies, and musicians. ( maybe "musicians" is a better way to phrase it.)

Atheletes may not get as much buzz unless the totally mess up, but again they're not that above anyone. maybe they've got more popularity like cheerleaders at some schools~ but they're all people.

The biggest reason I would pay attention to a certain person is because they're gorgeous *cough* ALEX PETTYFER *cough*

Better chaos than a world full of the Jersey Shore.

Despite my reservations about just how real Jersey Shore actually is, chaos and the crew of Jersey Shore are more and less the same thing, lol.

Also, Andy, I have to disagree with you. The people of the world would aspire to become doctors, lawyers, used car salesmen if they so desire be so. Just because the celebrities are gone it doesn't mean all aspiration is gone. Sure, we all want to be famous on some level, but there are people who would rather like to be a loving mother/housewife or a pilot or whatever than be in the public eye all the time.

    Funny thing, that.

I've been 'downa shore' more times than I care to count. And their ilk only make up about 5% of the people I've seen. The rest are either tourists or normal folk working their summer jobs. Maybe I've never been to 'their' part of New Jersey. Or maybe I was just in the nicer areas. *shrug*

And just to add to the discussion, I personally think we take celebrity idolatry too far. It's nice to look up to someone who contributes to the betterment of the world, but when people get famous for sex tapes and being idiots in general, thats when it needs to stop.

I nearly cried once when a little girl said she looked up to Paris Hilton. Because Madame Curie wasnt cool enough, I guess.

There've probably always been 'celebrities'. Right back to Socrates (and probably further back) or whoever. It's not like there's a factory in which artists of whatever kind go in and get magically transformed into media darlings. Celebrities are what we as a public make of them: if every one of Lady Gaga's Twitter followers unfollows her and the press start ignoring everything about her apart from her music, she might not be a celebrity any more, but she'll still be a musician. Likewise for any other celebrity: the label and their 'art' aren't mutually exclusive (well, for the most part e.g. the aforementioned Jersey Shore cast members). Celebrity culture is a product of our own making. It's not 'necessary', but it's not going anywhere: we might as well get used to it.

I don't really believe that it's as unfair or anything, as you portray it. It depends on a LOT of things. If you want to be famous, the possibility of that happening depends on where you live, what your talent or profession is, your personal skills in whatever, etc. Some people have all those things on their side and some people just don't, and some people just get discovered randomly and it's all just pure chance sometimes. Also, people need other people to look up to and put them on a pedestal and stuff like that, what Andy said.

As a Philly person I'm guessing you went to the South Jersey shores (Ocean City, Atlantic City, Wildwood, Cape May, etc.). Jersey Shore is from the North Jersey area, since they're all from New York to begin with, so South Jersey doesn't really match it. Just throwing that out there haha.

But idk, I don't think you can get rid of celebrities. There will always be people that stand out for whatever reason, they have money or the drive to become famous. I don't think it's possible or something you'd want to make it so no one stood out enough to become a celebrity.

They're overpaid, yeah. But, I don't begrudge them for it. I don't care you made your money as long as it isn't ill-gotten. If you can get more than you're worth, go for it.

Not everyone has something special about them. There are loads of talented people though. But that doesn't make a celebrity. Not all celebrities have talent XD You just need that spark that makes you fascinating to someone... enough to pay money for what you produce end up making money for others in the process. You're on display as long as you're making someone money for someone else
