It's the end of the world as we know... and I feel fine!

I remember seeing this on the History Channel once, and I was reminded of it on the radio a few nights ago...

Anyway, a bit of a prerequisite... nothing stirs up quite as much paranoia, worry, and fear as the idea of "the End of the World". Many mystics and so-called prophets (such as Nostradamus) predicted the End of the World down to an exact date. I forget the exact date, but Nostradamus' prediction happened not too long ago. There was an eclipse, from what I've heard, but no "End of the World".

However, there is something that stands out among predictions dealing with the World's End... and the most prominent is that of the Mayan Calender. It's hard to take in, as I don't fully understand the calender itself, but it has been recorded to have predicted many things. Here's Wikipedia's take on it:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_calendar

But it's not the calender that's interesting... it's what the calender is believed to predict that is interesting. It's believed that the Mayan Calender predicts the End of the World at a very specific date:

    December 21st, 2012

I wish I had posted something after I saw that show, so I'm can't give too much information, it just seemed like an interesting thing to discuss. Even without the Mayan Calender taken into account, 2012 is said to be a significant year no matter what. Here's Wikipedia about the year of 2012 in general:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012

Now I, personally, am not one to believe astronomical mumbo-jumbo, but there's something about 2012 in correlation to the Mayan Calender being reset to zero that makes me wonder.

And all of us will be seeing this entire year. It's only 5 years away... what do you all make of it?

The impression of the Mayan calendar has been upon made due to their accuracy astronomically and on its predictions as well, or one may call, prophecies.

Well, anyway, the calendar is too complex for me (or anyone) to understand. I guess that's what I never really took interest upon it. To me, this sounds like the whole 6/6/06 fiasco again.

If you're right, I can back it up... for one thing, things have been going downhill since THIS exact time of last year. I see more people than EVER nowadays screaming IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD SINNERS BEWARE!!

Buuut on the other hand, I don't see anything on your searches that back it up from what I'M seeing. Perhaps I'm a little young and awkward? Meh.

Who knows? In 2012, we could all be headed to heaven or the underworld, or could be chatting here on PC. Tough to tell. You would disagree to make yourself feel good, but it's too complicated.

It is really interesting, and I love reading about this stuff, but when it comes down to it... I'm more inclined to agree with Gunn Yoshiaki. :x I've never been a superstitious person and I'm not gonna start now.

Great, now i can never do what i want to do.

    I hope your happy.

Evangelion takes place in 2015! >D So we aren't totally doomed 8D *slap'd for fictional backup*

Only time will tell whether it's true or not :P I,for one of many others, don't think the world will be ending in 2012 or anything of that sort.Besides,if it does end,we'll probably be more technologically advanced or something, and we could possibly have a way to avoid this danger [?] ? :p Dunno.

Technologically advanced? It's 2007 and I was told there would be flying vehicles seven years ago. :P *joke*

    Do flying saucers count? :P

Some people believe the whole 2012 is related to some sort of alien invasion/disclosure project. =| Well I love reading all these conspiracy theories because they're interesting but I'm not going to get excited about anything until 2012 actually arrives and it starts raining fireballs or something. And of course, all the believes will be yelling "I told you so!" to the skeptics as we all burn to a crisp! D= In the end, there's no point in worrying about any of it.

The Maya Calender is quite intriguing. If only someone could explain it to me in layman terms.

Hypothesis, man, hypothesis. It's not scientifically proven, so it's not a theory yet. It's but a guess as of current.

    Anywhoo, anyone remembers 1975? Hmmm?

    Jordan.

Why? What happened in 1975? (I'm pretty bad at history).

Too lazy to look up Wikipedia eh? Well members of the Jehova's witnesses believed that Armageddon would happen some time in 1975 and so they seperated themselves from the world, went to shelter and awaits for the new world.

    Jordan.

P.S.: No one answers before me.
P.P.S: 1975 was also the year football/soccer star David Beckham was born. :P

I wouldnt be worried, from reading a few articles there seems to be no sound scientific evidence to support a bunch of superstitous age-old myths. (As applies to most paranormal and belief systems).

Ahh.. If this were true, wouldn't we be in panic? And besides, so many big operations are going on to try to change the world and correct our mistakes, and why would scientists put so much effort into turning our planet into eco-friendly if the end of the world would come in five years? I used to actually believe this theory, but now, I just don't. Who knows, in five years, we could have the technology to avoid this danger anyway. No doubt the Mayans were incredibly intellegent, but even they can't predict the world's lifespan.

Who knows? Maybe they don't want reveal the truth to the world, yet.

Wikipedia isn't a reliable source for 100% true facts.

I'm not so much worried about the world ending in 2012, I'd be more worried about the masses of people who BELIEVE it's going to. Regardless of if fire reigns down from the sky and kills us all or not, the mass hysteria that might result in the coming of this date could be almost as bad. Rioting, looting, people who simply stop going to work because they think the world is going to end, services (electricity, water, sewage, etc.) will go out as a result, and so on.

THAT is where the true danger lies, in my opinion.

I agree with you and besides if fire rains down on us(which I don't beleive)they would tell us and we could all go underground or something.....

Actually, it'll kill you, nobody would escape the ned of the world. And I don't believe the Mayan-Calendare thing, only God knows the date, nobody else knows, even His angels don't know.

Oh, the human race will eventually end, that's a fact. If we don't destroy ourselves (which I'm pretty sure it'll happen that way), the sun will kill us. Well... the sun exploding, actually. See, the sun is a star, and all stars have a lifespan, much like a human. And when stars die... they tend to go out with a bang, quite literally, before becoming a black hole or a white dwarf, or anything else I can't quite remember. But regardless, we're too close to the sun to avoid any annihilation it'll bring when it finally dies; I believe the exact term is a "supernova", but I haven't opened an astrophysics books in so long.

So just take comfort in knowing that, some day, the human race will end. It's a matter of when that's interesting, and, to more of a degree, how.
