I thought it would be nice to have ranks, like some symbols to show how active you are or something. I've seen it a lot in other forums, so I thought, why not here?

There was once a rep system yes. However the staff has decided long ago that it shall never return.
Also, there is a rank system. It's the default usertitiles. If you change your usertitle then the "rank" wont show up. I doubt the admins would implement a graphical post count based rank system.

Althought it would be nice if they changed the standard from "Beginning Trainer" to "Bidoof" :P

Exactly. Having a rank system would create a larger rift between noobs and vets. We dont tneed that now do we?

He's not talking about reputation, but rank graphics, like the little images the staff and supporters use.

But I don't really see it's necessary. The people who have to know how active you are (which is the staff in most cases) will find it out other ways, and others users can always have a look at your postcount, which serves the same purpose.

No it's not.
Lets say it's based off of post count (in vB you can gain a new rank when you get a set number of posts). Someone will say "Hey, you're a higher rank than me!" so that member will go around making pointless posts just to gain that rank and to get "respect" from the lower members. All it does is promote (I guess you'd say) unfairness among the members.

And you can also use custom avatars, we're not that restrictive on signatures, you can fix up your own profiles and such. It's not like we're preventing the members from having freedoms, it's just this idea wouldn't work out.

We do have ranks like this. Just because they aren't at all prominent doesn't mean they aren't still there! If you reset/forfeit your custom title, it'll default to your current user rank which is based on postcount.

No symbols, but it's still technically there.
