I really didn't understand the concept of ''four move limit'' in the Pokemon games, I understand it is for balance but still when it comes to battling nothing be wrong..... As we take a look from the anime the trainer commands it Pokemon with various moves and due to the capabilities of the Pokemon it will remember that move forever(Only very few Pokemon applied) let not go deeper because it is a Gaming Central. Anyways Have you ever generally understand the concept of Four Move Limit in Games? Do you think it will be better if there will no Four move Limit? If this rule ended after some point what do you think changes will be took over in the Games?

I think the reason for keeping it is that the games are, let's be honest, aimed at younger audiences and so simplicity is best. Otherwise, everyone's game would wind up looking like a WoW UI with all the moves available :P

Maybe if you could select 4 from a move pool whenever you want, from what you've learned, that would be ace.

I think a 4 move limit has some cons, but there are pros that outweigh the cons. I think 4 is a good amount because, if you take into account TMs as well, you could have a Pokemon that could literally deal with all it's weaknesses and be able to hit any Pokemon hard. There wouldn't be as much need for more Pokemon in your roster. One of the few cons of the 4 move limit is that you will pretty much need a HM slave but that isn't reason enough to remove the limit.

Maybe if you could select 4 from a move pool whenever you want, from what you've learned, that would be ace.

The problem with this is that, say for a Gym Leader battle, you would choose moves that are super effective against their Pokemon and that would make it a lot easier to complete the game. It wouldn't be as much of a challenge.

I remember when people always questioned if having four moves really is enough, and I once heard that rumour about Ruby & Sapphire increasing the move limit but that was never true. I think someone above mentioned that it helps with the younger audience (pretty much where Pokemon is targeted at) and if we look at the big picture, increasing the limit would sorta take away challenge from stuff like Gym Battles or other major bosses.

Never take realism into consideration when designing games just for the sake of it.

4 moves limit is a deliberate design choice and its purpose is to maintain simplicity and allows for more straightforward play. The whole games are designed around the limit, and increasing the number would break the design.

There's nothing wrong with it. Rarely if ever will you have a 5th move that you need outside of the meta game, anyway.

Aside from the theories and comments from the above posts. I say it's probably the memory capacity of GB game pak, that was why we are limited to 4 moves since the very beginning of the franchise.

Years ago I've heard from the internet that Game Freak considered to expand the move limits during the development of Ruby and Sapphire, yet they eventually scrapped the idea. Probably they realized the 4-move-limit balanced the battling scene fair/staying consistent to the franchise?

I'm totally fine with this system, to be complete honest. There's almost no-point on building a team if a Pokémon has no move limit, thus throwing out all the fun from Pokémon games.

It might wreck the competitive play's balance if the limit were to be increased or removed. I know, having only 4 moves sometimes annoys me since I can't cram all the moves I want. But if I could do that, then there wouldn't be so much challenge in the games anymore. But yeah, realistically, a pokemon(especially those smart Psychics) SHOULD be able to learn more moves.

Why you want to remove 4 move limits it makes the game pretty unbalanced and ruins the competitiveness saying like you have 3 moves with 95 base power and 100% accuracy and 2 stats moves and 2 powerful moves and the limit keeps you strategically thinking of which moves is best, which to cover weakness, which to threaten opponents with stats moves, stats boosting and many other plans I'm fine with the limit it keeps us sharp and focus whenever leveing, thru move tutor, remembering a move, taught thru TM/HMS it to elimnate having so much coverage that you can have 1 coverage, 2 coverages, 2 status moves, 1 status moves, 1 stab moves, 2 stabs moves and so on. Just imagine having that much moves that would ruin the fun

They understand that simplicity suits the games. Not just for kids, but in general. It keeps the battles from getting too complicated and too technical, and makes it more about the entire team instead of just a single 'Mon.

As for the logical reasoning? I imagine learning to breath fire or cast lightning from the sky takes a great deal more dedication and focus than, say, a martial arts move... so I imagine while some Pokemon COULD theoretically learn more than four moves at a time, those moves would all suffer by comparison because they wouldn't get as much focus or specialization.

I don't mind myself being limited to four moves in any way, and definitely agree with most of our reasons behind them keeping this limitation for us. In general, the limit helps to keep battling more straightforward.

Though, in future, I hope to see them add a couple of outside-move slots. Attacks that are stored here cannot be used in battle, and would have to be HMs. I know we aren't meant to be discussing this here (it's a little off-topic), but I believe the change would help reducing our need for HM slaves, allowing us more freedom to use whatever Pokémon we like, and not those that we feel we have to.

I like having just four moves. I think if they HAD to change it I think I'd eventually get used to having five moves, but no more than that. Especially since even changing it to five would turn the online metagame on it's head!

I too think most people have already said the things that I would, that four moves would likely be enough to keep the game from getting too borked, but some people might question this logic given the anime and how many moves Pokémon use there.
