Warning: although this is a thread about sex in novels and 'sex books' themselves, please do not describe the sex scenes themselves!!!!!!!!
We are all relatively mature here, we can abide by this rule, right?

So, I thought that with the phenomenon of Fifty Shades of Grey and all, it would be nice to talk about that book and sex in literature in general. I'm not talking about Playboy!!!!! I know you don't read that for the articles!!!!

Are you comfortable with reading sex scenes in books? Do you get offended by them? Talk about some books you have read, if any, that sex is a major theme of. Did you enjoy it? Remember, no descriptions of the scenes! Won't somebody please think of the children?

Sex scenes in books are my favorite kinds of sex scenes. I don't actually read erotic novels but I do read a little guro manga, Suehiro Maruo being my favorite artist if indeed you're interested, and vintage porn for artistic inspiration.

I am not offended/uncomfortable by any kind of sexual referencing in the slightest, and I do in fact enjoy it. There's not a whole lot else I can think to say about this.

I haven't read a whole lot of sex-filled books, but I don't mind reading them. I feel a little uncomfortable reading them if my family is in the room or something, I'm paranoid that they'll look over my shoulder and see what I'm reading and thing badly of me lol. I don't like books where there's a ridiculous amount of sex that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the story - it's just silly. (which, from what I've heard, makes 50 Shades Of Grey sound really funny because it seems so terrible)

Some books I've read are Game of thrones, A Clash Of Kings (working on A Storm Of Swords now!) It's Kind Of A Funny Story, I Love You Beth Cooper, Fool, I guess Romeo And Juliet counts, uh... those are the only ones I can think of right now haha, I'll probably edit more in if I think of them.

I wouldn't say I enjoyed the sex scenes, they just tended to be a little more interesting than other parts of the chapter *cough* Theon Greyjoy *cough* but overall I just tend to be unaffected. I see it as part of the book, and I know I'm mature enough to handle them so... no big deal. :D

I don't mind sex in books, sometimes it adds a lot to the story if it's really well placed. I don't like it when it's just there for the sake of it though; I mean what's the point? D: Something like erotica is different because the aim of that is to be just a sexual book, but if there's a random sex scene in a book that had no need for it then I don't really like that. Not because it's a sex scene, just because it seems like quite a tacky writing device to try and keep interest :3

I used to be a fan of VC Andrews when I was younger, and her themes are sexual but also very dark, which is what made it interesting. Off the top of my head I can remember a few examples (warning these are a bit on the graphic side, just the kind of messed up sex-related things in the books):

    1. 4 siblings trapped in an attic for 3 years, oldest brother and sister fall in love and sex it up and get married when they escape (in sequels their children also fall in love with each other, lol).
    2. Man gets a girl to wear dresses made for very young girls that barely fit her and try to rape her in them.
    3. Man convinces a girl to pose so he can make a doll out of her, he turns it into a sexual things, she's much younger than him.
    4. Father molests daughter, book is about her therapy sessions.

All of those were played out very darkly which made it really interesting. I can't imagine being interested in sex for the sake of sex, but sex as part of a larger narrative can really keep you interested.

I stopped reading 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami about two thirds of the way through in part because of how badly prevalent the sex scenes were. While not a novel explicitly about sex, there are a large number of scenes involving the subject in quite graphic detail laden throughout. In the beginning, it was fine as they took up a relatively small chunk of the narrative, and were written with a distinctive flair and subtlety. As the plot wore on, however, they became more pronounced and more graphic... but less inclined to the main plot. Indeed, there'd be chapters that were pretty much just made up of sex scenes in either dreamscapes or reality and had little to do with anything. Added to that was the fact that the writing itself became so much sloppier with regard to the sex scenes that I just couldn't continue reading at all. It's one of the only books I've read with a significant sexual content and yet I couldn't finish it. I feel like such a prude! :P

FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC. AHHHHHH!! Make it go away. Dx

I don't mind sex in my literature as long as it's well-written and doesn't take away from the plot or otherwise detract from whatever is making me enjoy the book.

Explicit stuff is... meh. I'd rather not read that. If there's gonna be some titillation I'd rather it came in a form like Lolita where it's not ever explicit, but is certainly overflowing with metaphor and description and all that.

Oh, gooooooooooooooood. Flowers in the Attic, nope, I'm out. Never reading that book again. Bye.

I read some of the aforementioned 50 Shades of Grey a couple of days ago and... oh my god, the first 50 pages or so made me think this was another boring romance novel. "oooooh, I'm Anastasia, he's Christian, he's hot, I'm hot, we autonatically have an attraction towards each other" Something along the lines of that.
Then the sex started and it got to a point where E.L. James' descriptions of the acts made it impossible for me to go any further. Surprisingly, not because of what she was describing, just because of the way she was describing it, the grammar and whatnot. Sex just doesn't bother me??????

Okay so I've recently been reading a book which I've watched the TV show of, and there was a moment that surprised me haha. The whole book is pretty light hearted with some serious themes and moments, but has absolutely nothing risqué in it, up until halfway through the of the middle chapters. The book had undertones of romance and relationships throughout the story (though they had never been a big focus), but then I had to burst out laughing when halfway through this chapter began a completely out of the blue graphically described sex scene between the two main characters, which when it ended was completely forgotten about and the story continued as normal. I didn't burst out laughing because it was sex, but because of how randomly placed that encounter was and at the fact that it really didn't suit the book at all. Don't get me wrong, it was still enjoyable to read, but now I'm kinda thinking "wait did I imagine that?" It didn't put me off the book, but it did make it difficult to take the remaining chapters as seriously as they were intended to be taken which took away a lot of the suspense from the book.
