Alright, so there's no way you people have avoided this lady's hit All About That Bass. You have probably heard the single after that, Lips Are Movin'. Now we have Dear Future Husband out and about.

SO. All About That Bass and Dear Future Husband have both stirred up some issues. In the case of All About That Bass, we have the issue of her saying "it's okay to look this way because men will still like your ass." However, the song did get a lot of praise for telling bigger women that every inch of them was perfect from the bottom to the top. On to Dear Future Husband, it's getting a lot of flack for reinforcing gender roles and stereotypes. I think it's also noteworthy that she brings in a lot of the women stereotypes of the 1950's and this song as well as her previous singles take a lot of inspiration from music of that era in their melodies, bass lines, and other sounds.

So! What do you think of these songs and the attention they are getting? If you have no opinion on the reception they're getting for their messages and lyrical content, feel free to comment on how you feel about the artist, how she sounds, etc, just remember to keep it tame.

pretty early on in the all about that bass days she said some comment about how she wished she had the strength to be anorexic so she could lose weight (paraphrasing the exact quote here) and i've blocked her from my mind ever since

OMG my friend JUST told me about that holy shit. Yeah, she acted like it was some method of dieting...like no girl...no.

I haven't heard a vast majority of the songs, but from the ones I have heard, I can't help, but to cringe. I have some big problems with her songs, namely with All About That Bass, Title, and Lips Are Movin' since those are the only ones that I have heard. I haven't heard Dear Future Husband, so I won't comment on it. In All About That Bass I can't stand the skinny shaming, aggressive nature, and teaching the biggest lie ever that everyone is "perfect". You should never skinny shame (I know there's the part where she goes "Nah, I'm just playing, I know you think you're fat", but that doesn't excuse the skinny shaming), nor should you ever fat shame, you should never shame a person's body ever. The aggressive nature mainly comes in at the part that goes "You know I won't be no stick figure, silicone barbie doll. So, if that's what you're into then go ahead and move along.", that's like saying "If you don't like big girls, then move along because you don't deserve me." and I hate how right off the bat it is. Lastly, no one is perfect, be it your body, your personality, or anything, nobody is perfect and there is always going to be a flaw with someone. As for Title, my biggest problem is how much she complains about being in the friend-zone and trying every single desperate attempt to get one guy even though the song makes it very clear that he is not interested in her nor does he want her as his girlfriend. The only good thing about Title is this part, "If it ain't no thang, I won't be hanging around. But don't blow up my ****** at 3 AM saying how you need me now". For Lips Are Movin', my biggest problem is how she outright accuses the guy of cheating and lying and that he is always lying when his lips are movin'. Now how dumb that does that sound? "Hey babe, I brought home some pepperoni pizza!", "No you didn't. You're talking which means you're lying.". "Hey babe, I got a promotion at work!", "No you didn't. You're lips are moving which means you're lying.". "Hey honey, I bought you a 20 karat diamond ring!", "No you didn't. You're lips are moving which means you lied and you stole it!". "Hey honey, I got our honeymoon pictures in today from the professional photographer.", *shows her the pictures*, "No you didn't. You're such a terrible liar. I know you're lying because you're talking and your lips are moving. You're a jerk!". Yeah, that's pretty dumb. I know that she is accusing him of cheating and can even smell a girls perfume on him, but again, she's accusing him of lying because he is talking. Plus you can't be really sure he's cheating just because you can smell women's perfume on him, you have no idea how it got there and for all you may know it could've just been a friendly encounter with a female friend and he's not really cheating.

I personally don't like her songs or the messages she's trying to send. I get that she at least had good intentions for All About That Bass, but again, you should never ever shame someone for their body and no one is perfect. And as for Title and Lips Are Movin', in my opinion, they were really bad.

Hmm? If someone is a liar it wouldn't be unusual to use phrases like "every word you say is a lie", or something similar, which is basically what she's saying here. If someone lies then you don't trust anything they say.

I don't take musically that seriously. Her songs have catchy tunes, I found All About The Bass a bit grating after it was overplayed by the radio, but other than that it was an alright song. :)
