mgba emulator help

So I've been using mgba for a while and love all the features but one thing is bugging me, I don't know why its happened but none of the status lowering or raising effects are visible.

The sound plays but none of that glow affect is shown, and it just really ruins immersion in the game, can someone give me any tips on what's causing this. I'm using .8.4 with open g.l settings. rom base fire red.

Try VBA-M, those effects should work fine with it.
