Effective tomorrow, Monday, Feburary 28, people who wish to reinstall Windows will be needing to call Micrsoft to get the ok to reinstall. Microsoft started this to stop piracy. Here's the full article:

In other news, the the number of Linux machines rises.
Also in Microsoft news, people who have Windows XP without Service Pack 2, will be forced to install SP2 whether or not you want too. Microsoft will send SP2 to evry system that doesn't have it and automaticlly install it. Full article here:

This royally sucks. I have a server in my basement, that is running a less-than-licensed XP. Thank GOD I am moving to mac

So next time I have to reformat my PC, I've gotta call Microsoft? That's a bunch of crap... x.x

If you buy a brand name computer that has XP already installed, there's no activation when you "restore" it. If you buy XP, activation shouldn't be a problem. If you pirate XP... well *coughcorprationversioncough*.

    theres always keygens =)

Honestly, it's not that big of a deal.

Windows works, which is all one should really whine about.

are you reffering to "Microsoft Works" that horrid program? That is such an oxymoron!

    Meh.

Windows doesn't bother me. I like OS X and Windows XP equally. I despise Linux (it's just a personal preference. Don't flame me for it, 'kay?). And although some of the things Microsoft get to pull off without federal intervention tend to disturb me, I have to admit I have a great deal of respect for Bill Gates and his corporation (in the business sense). Think about it. We're talking about a corporation who puts free, legally licensed copies of their OS in schools and federal institutions. On the surface, this might look like a simple act of charity or goodwill. But in reality, it can be likened to the free penny bag of crack your local dealer gives you for the purpose of creating an addict. Children who are raised on Windows become Windows consumers when they grow up. It's as simple as that. And besides, the free education licenses make Microsoft look better in the Public Relations sense, so nobody's any the wiser.

Of course, this paints Microsoft in a rather unfavorable light, doesn't it? And it's not just that that makes people dislike them so. The worst part is that, with Microsoft having such an enormous portion of the market, the chances of developing a better operating system than windows are quickly diminishing, what with Microsoft buying out all the potential candidates. It's no wonder that so many people are turning to Linux and Mac OS's, when it bothers them morally just to use Windows.

But like I said before, I do indeed have respect for Microsoft. As a business, they're one of the most intelligent there are. And that is why they can be so frightening. Love 'em or hate 'em, I think it's safe to say that Microsoft will be around for a good long time, as long as they can manage to keep within federal regulations.

It isn't gonna stop piracy. I just checked to see if lets me run windows without activation. And guess what, I can actually activate it without calling up the microsoft guys. I can't tell you how I did that though. Against the rules lol.

I myself don't worry about activation since I'm a legal user of Windows XP. I know the deal with calling up MS to activate it doesn't stop it but it will slow down pirate. IMO I don't think OS should be pirate since it's the "main core" of running your computer. That's like stealing a car but you're spending money "suping(sp?)" the car to look "cool/phat." It should be the other way around.
    <_<
    >_>
...I think I said too much.

You are right about that. But you are forgetting a little thing in Windows XP which most of us never use lol. Safe Mode.;)
You can go into safe mode, get the keygen and.....
Everything in the world has an alternate way. It is almost impossible to stop piracy.
I think I should remove 'almost' from my last sentence.

And yes, after reading this post you may feel that I support piracy. Actually, I don't. Piracy is a bad thing, but there are some things that can't be changed.
It is right to curtail piracy, but what Billy boy is doing here is absurd, if not stupid. I mean, SP2 is 250MB! If you forcefully make some poor guy with a dial-up download such a huge thing, he'll barely get any bandwidth to surf other sites! So, even if he/she does have original software, he is actually losing his money, bandwidth and time downloading some crap which he/she may not even use!

Keygens, are simple programs, which generate code so you dont have to call for it. Fire up safe mode, run a keygen and BOOM! there ya are. I have a few on my palm pilot =) I have 3 Windows XP licenses, and I dont want to calll M$ everytime I re-nstall.
