When you name things do you like to put lots of thought into the name no matter how mundane the subject or do you just think of something random (like "barnflush") and then name it that?

I usually put thought into it if I am naming something like a pet or team name, but if it is like, a random file on my computer, I just bang the keyboard a few times and hit save.

Depends. I give thought to names for pet named and whatnot, but I think up things like Pokemon nicknames right at the moment. Only Pokemon nickname that I had (and still have) planned is giving Typhlosion the name Dante.

Files on my computer are a mix of both. I rarely name anything for school, for I already have labeled folders for that. On the other hand, I always name ROM's (especially hacks) so I can distinguish them.

I tend to name stuff after a nearby object... like, if I'm eating a muffin, I might name it Muffin. (This is assuming that it's not going to be a normal human name, like if it's a pokemon nickname or something.)

If it's something I have to give a name to, like computers or electronic devices, I'm like "ahahaha have a stupid name like 'the laptop'" and I'm done with it. I'm not good with names. I only just recently named my computer something that wasn't 'the laptop'... *facepalm* Sometimes I won't even name them properly; I have a lot of characters in my writing whose last names are (LN). >_>

If I don't have to name it, I don't. I'm bad with names.

Well, yeah and no. It depends on if this thing or even an animal will be an important part of my life or not. I'm not really that good with names, but if I like a name and it suits the thing or person/animal I'm naming then I try to chose and give it a name with great respect.
like naming half of my teddy bears Satou and the other half Suzuki-San

I don't tend to put too much thought into naming things. But I have like, a mental list of names that I love, and just randomly choose one of those.

Which is why my things have names that don't suit them, and many share the same name. Regina isn't really a fitting name for a laptop but I picked that name anyway, lol. And I have like, fifteen Pokemon that I named Nikolai.

If it's a pet or something, I'd put more thought into it. Like, it took weeks for me to decide to name my hamster Mikhail. I was debating over quite a few different names.

I tend to name things randomly. Often, I ask other people to help name things for me, or I just use that one song lyric.

For example, my cat's name is Alex. I know not of an Alex that is significant to me, nor does the name Alex intrigue me.

Sometimes I put a lot of thought into it, but usually I can come up with a good name on the spot. Or, I have an urge to name a certain thing a certain name. Like, I really want a cat and I want to name him Rasu. lol It just hit me one day. But if you're my mom's cat, you get to be any name other than your real one! I'm known to give a fair few nicknames to people, and animals. Especially animals. I call my mom's cat Wuffles, Chubbz, Fat Fat, Num nums, Fluffles, Beautiful, Sexy, Manly, Spaghetti, Puffball, Noodles, Barnyard...the list goes on. His name is Cooper btw.

Oh, I used to name my consoles. Cherry the N64, Midnight the GCN, and Flake the Wii. I name all my plushies too lol. I really do like naming stuff.

If I'm going to name something, I usually put a lot of thought into it. I like there to be some sort of significance to the name as a way of making it seem more special or personal to me. While at other times, sometimes it's just better suited to name something simply as it is. I've done that before too.

Coming up with usernames for websites is the worst. I hate having to do it because it always takes me an age lol.

As for naming actual things, I like to put a lot of thought into that too, not because I want something that's necessarily representative of what it is, but because I want something that sounds cool. I named one of the characters on my Pokemon game "Drake" once because I thought that sounded awesome lmao.

I always put some thought into things, even filenames. I want to be able to find them in the future. My Pokemon/pets are named very carefully though. Like my cat is named Samson, because he's a Persian so his fur is really really long and he looks really weird without his fur, nullifying the power of "cute" he has. Just like Samson losing his power when his hair is cut.

No, I dont put that much thought into pet's names. Both my pets have the same names they had when we got them. My dog is named Murphy,a nice name, and he is used to that name. My cat's name is Katniss, like the Hunger Games character, I just decided to keep her name.

I tend to put a good amount of thought into a pet's name, I want to make sure the name is easy to remember yet rolls off the tongue depending on the personality of my pet at the time, had a really sweet cat named Squirty a while back but I chose that particular name because it was an homage to the cat that belonged to one of my best friends back then, one of the rare times I name something out of nostalgia's sake or just a simple tribute to the time I had with a particular someone all those years ago.

I don't name a lot of things, but when I do you could say I put a considerable amount of time in coming up with names for them. One of my characters went by the name of [ ] for over a year, until I felt that the name of Stephan was right for him. Because that's what it has to do: it HAS to feel right. I came up with several names for him, but all felt rushed or not quite right.
It's the oddest feeling when your own character tells you what their name should be. I don't believe in "creating something on the spot", but more in "it'll come when it wants to come"... and when it comes, it stays.

It's the same with names for me. The most important thing is that the name somehow reflects the character, or pet. And it has to sound nice. : >

same. i also put a lot of thought when it comes to naming my sims, choosing a username, etc.
when it comes to naming my files (in the computer), i don't always use the keyboard smash technique. sometimes i just write whatever comes at the top of my head. for example, i downloaded a photo of roger radcliffe off the internet and saved it as, "roger is a creep.jpg" because that was my first thought upon seeing the photo.

My family and I spent a whole day trying to think of a good name for our dog. In contrast, I spend a whole second selecting which of the default Pokemon character names to use. The more 'important' the name is, the more time and thought and effort will be put in. Having said that, I can't think of anything else off the top of my head where I really put too much thought into a name... just poor Sally! :D

I prefer to have names stem from something. It's more often than not rooted down to music. However it can also stem from a living being in my life.

For example, two of my PC usernames have been Marz (my cat's name) and L'Viaquez (song by the Mars Volta; a band I loved back in the day). These days I've been drawn to the name Diplodocus, which is the name of a song by Noisia.
