You can either use codes, or you can look for months and months.

with most shinies, its a 1 in several hundred thousand chance of getting them ^^;
codes are easier, depending on whether you have game shark

As has been said, 1:8192 chance of seeing a Shiny. That doesn't mean that it never happens early, though. I found my Golden Shellder the first time I used Super Rod. Don't get your hopes up; I have been soft-resetting for Shiny starters for four days now.

To soft-reset for a Shiny Starter, save in front of the Pokeball containing your preferred Pokemon in Prof. Oak's lab. Take the Pokemon, wait for Gary to get his, then open your menu to look at its primary status page (where the picture is). If it isn't Shiny, hit A+B+Start+Select (all at the same time) to soft-reset and try again.

You can use the soft-reset method anywhere someone gives you a Pokemon, or you can see a Pokemon's sprite before battle (Legendary Birds, etc.)...

Most people see at least one Shiny in the course of the game... chances in the wild are the same, but you never know when your Shiny will come. So be prepared!! Have lots of Balls on hand, or use the Gameshark to max your Balls case inventory. That way, you have 99 of every single kind of Pokeball. Luxury Balls are nice; they make the Pokemon like you more.

Whatever you do, don't use any Poison, Confusing, Leeching, Burning, Wrapping, Constricting, Nightmare, or Cursing moves!!!!!!!!

And God have pity on you if you see a Shiny in the Safari Zone, LoL!

i really wish i had shinies but i have never ever seen one.(starts crying).

well the only ones ive seen are the red garydos (spelling?) from GSC and my friends green Oddish.

im hunting for a few as we speek so to say :)

ok one just keep playing if you guys have no social life and this should really be under shinies section

shark3019875, that is very rude. Shiny-hunting was meant to be a significant part of the game; another money-making ploy, perhaps, but many people besides those who've posted here think it is quite fun.

Don't worry, Ninetales and Jaws... you will find your Shinies. I found a Shiny Rattata before I beat Brock's gym!

A good strategy is to design a team that requires a lot of training in order to win (weaker Pokemon like Beedrills and Butterfrees, etc.). That makes Shiny-hunting a lot less boring. Something with False Swipe (get a Scyther egg from a friend) makes catching them a lot easier...

...Oh, if you are trying to find a Shiny Abra (or a Legendary), please have a Master Ball at hand somehow.

ok w/e i am just speaking the truth and just keep searching you have to have paient(can't spell) that better :\

well when i go shiny hunting i got 2 pokemon with sleep moves (one is butterfree with sleep powder..forgot what my otherone is atm) the plan is put them to sleep...switch to a weak hiter (if they are low level) or hit them hard with one of the sleepers attacks whilst they are asleep. catch them the normal way...cant be that hard now can it?

Jaws...

Haha, well, don't get your hopes UP but don't let them down. Actually, don't look. You know what!? STOP NOW. They usually appear RIGHT when you stop looking or aren't looking. So if you're looking you can forget finding one, but that doesn't always mean you'll find one if you don't look. Anyways, enjoy the game. Don't ruin it for yourself. Kay? Later. ^___^

ok?how do you noe when you encounter a shiny?so how are you going to use sleep moves? a question to ponder your thoughts

Uhhh...was that a rhetorical question? In anycase...it "sparkles" when you run into it and...the second question was just stupid. You press the "A" button over an attack that puts a Pokemon to sleep.

not like that you don't noe when you encounter one it could be any time and what are the oddes out of all you pokemon you will have a pokemon with a sleep move duh

question

What exactly does the game look for when it calculates whether or not to appear a shiny? is it in the identification number?

Speaking of shiny pokemon I recently ran into a shiny Nidorino in the Safari Zone! I managed to catch it too! Took me 10 safari ball and I thought I was going to lose it. Just one question though. If I evolve it, will it stay a shiny?

Yes, when a pokemon evolves it stays shiny. But before you evolve it, make sure you like the evolved verson better than the un-evolved verson. My friend evolved his shiny Whizmur, and now he regrets it.
