Pokemon Concept vs Pokemon Stats

A topic I've always wanted to talk about among the fans to kind of get this viewpoint. Now there are many comments I read through community driven websites such as Deviantart and Youtube with works related to Pokemon that kind of do bother me a little bit to be honest and that's where this subject comes up, the creativity of the Pokemon vs it's actual statistics.

The question at hand is really do you like or have favorite Pokemon because of the design, concept, role in the Anime/Manga, as opposed to only liking the fact that it's a "stronger Pokemon" from others but yet you are ashamed to admit it only because there is a side to the fanbase that will act like jerks for what you use or like?

It's just kind of one of those thoughts that kind of go through my mind that kind of drove me to how I enjoy the Pokemon franchise. One of the reasons I bought Pokemon Black is because I liked the feministic look of Reshiram more then Zekrom's design. A lot seem to prefer using dragon types but I seem to always go in the back and enjoy using grass types mainly because of my love for Reptiles. I would pick Venasuar over Charizard any day. I'm using an emoga in my current Pokemon Black playthrough only because I loved Iris's emoga in the anime. I know that Chikorita is the worst pick for a starter in gen 2 but I always pick it anyway just because I want a dinosaur that relies on support and team strategies instead of having an alligator spam ice fang and surf for me making it too easy.

Call it strange, though Pokemon games only show quick animations during battle, I always love just visualizing these epic battles of Pokemon clashing with each other and thinking of ideas of what these Pokemon actually look like while they're using their moves. While the music is playing, I see these visuals within my head of a great battle. Just recently, I visualized my Liepard growling away at Clay's Excadrill while leech seed was slowly rotting it away. When I use Pokemon just for the sake of strength alone, I don't seem to get that same experience.

Don't know, maybe I'm just an odd-ball who thinks that strong Pokemon are too mainstream. But a lot of people and even in different fandoms seem so quick to judge a fictional creature or character only judging it only if it's superior to another instead of taking everything else into consideration which is a shame to me because then it just kind of feels that people will only like one thing at that point keeping the fanbase from being diverse. I just want to know if anyone has a kind of odd opinion on certain Pokemon because of the way they interpret them and makes that Pokemon feel special to them or they feel certain Pokemon get over-shadowed because people only judge them for whether or not they are reliable in battle.

I'll admit that one of the main reasons I love Charizard is because how it is in the anime, and its design, despite being very generic.
I know that Charizard isn't the most useful in battle, but I really just like having Charizard around.
Another Pokemon that I like for some odd reason is Tauros.
It's also a very simple looking Pokemon, but I think it's also really underrated. Poor Tauros is often overshadowed in battles.. well, normal types in general are overshadowed.
Another Pokemon I like is Magikarp. I know it sounds silly, but I think Magikarp is a very adorkable Pokemon.

As for judging Pokemon based on power? Well, I admit that I do a bit of that too. I really wanted to have a Sceptile on my team, but unfortunately it was so quick to get KO'd, so quick that it wasn't even useful. I love Sceptile; mostly because his role in the anime, but as I said above, it wasn't really fit for battle.

Luckily for me though; most of the Pokemon I like (Design-wise, anime-wise) tend to be on the top of the game. So I don't really need to worry about effectiveness too much.

Hah, you think it's strange imagining battles? I do the exact same thing! In fact that's one of the things that make Pokemon so enjoyable.

Personally Ive had more success with Dragons. I am a big fan of Dragons. The look, The strength and they are pretty resistant to many things. I generally stick to the ones Im a fan of. Im continously trying to figure out how the heck how people are stronger and faster then me. (does annoy me that they are) I know they are the Dragons are the best type. I backed them up with Water or Electric types, but finding them seem to make the Electrics weaker now a days versus the past

I love the Poli line obviously not really sure why, i like tadpoles and frogs, but Misty's Politoed did not really influence my liking of the Poli line.
The Turtwig line is another set of Pokemon I absolutely love, its a great Pokemon family and arguable one of the best starters all together. But the anime was so cruel to this line, Turtwig fitted into Ash's small and nimble token Pokemon but after it evolved it seemed to be forgotten and when it did get sent out it died 85% of the time let me say George Not Happy.
A Pokemon the Anime did make me like however was Swellow, I am not a huge fan of the token bird Pokemon and i usually ignore them and catch a flying Pokemon later on. So when I played RSE I did not catch it, only after watching how kick A** Ash's Swellow was i decided to catch it and i was pleasantly surprised it is now my favorite Token bird Pokemon.

I'd like to say that I use Pokemon based on a mixture of criteria, meaning they don't have an ugly back-sprite and have decent stats. The main stat I care about is Speed in-game. I can't tolerate slow Pokemon.

But for my favorite Pokemon itself, I definitely base it completely off design rather than stats or anything.

I've always preferred certain Pokemon, most of which are not the over popular few you see every day everywhere. I had no Pokemon games as a kid till Stadium, and i instantly chose the Pokemon I favored. No influence of stats, advantages, strength, I've used Pokemon in-game not because they are the best choice, but because I like them. Mudkip may be the hardest starter to use in Emerald, but I picked it because it's the starter I like. Blaziken may be able to blast me through the game in 7 hours, but hours or easiness doesn't matter to me. I enjoy playing each game, knowing I'm using the starter and Pokemon I like, not just because they will make it easy. There are 600 and more pokemon to enjoy, and only 29% are 'powerful'. I favor some Pokemon due to the anime, liking the animal it is based, their design, and even favoring types. I have always loved water types, nearly every water starter I have picked. I normally don't pick the Fire or Grass types, because they either make the game too easy, or I prefer a different starter. First time I play a game of a generation, I make sure to pick my favorite starter. If I do play all 3 versions, I will eventually pick each one. Each Pokemon i use on my team is special to me, long story short I agree with you pretty much. I enjoy each Pokemon, regardless of stats. =]

My preference for Pokemon changes incredibly quickly. The reason for why I like a specific Pokemon varies for all sorts of reasons, but I've noticed that my preferences almost always shy away from the Pokemon that I deem to be incredibly overused. Whether this is because they're incredibly effective in the actually game (such as Scizor and Charizard) or because they've gained a considerable fan base for having another notable feature (such as Eevee or Pikachu), I tend to find my opinions of them dropping considerably when I realise that everyone likes them.

I don't think this is me being particularly hipster though, even though others'll likely disagree with that. Too much of a good thing can eventually turn sour, and when you notice that a million people share exactly the same favourite Pokemon it grows tiresome particularly quickly. I find myself drawn away from these Pokemon solely because they're terribly overused. I just learn to find them annoying.

I quite like Spoink, actually. I think it's an often overlooked Pokemon that needs a little more love.

I prefer the stats. They work better for me most times.

What about a Pokemon appeals to you?

I am sure we all have some of our favorites? But why are they our favorites? What about these Pokemon causes them to be your favorites?

So for you when you see a pokemon and like it what about it appeals to you? Is it the design? How it does in battle? What the pokemon is and thing it is modeled after? A role it had in the Anime or Manga? You like it because of a Trading Card? Or is it a combination of several things all into one?

For me personally its a combination of all those. For instance I like Tyranitar based on how it looks and of course its awesome battling abilities. I like Blaziken cause it was great throughout the game and was extremely awesome the first time I saw it in the anime.

Isn't there another thread like this in another sub-forum?

Anyways, what appeals to me first is the design.

I love Charizard, Tauros, Garchomp, Haxorus, and several other Pokemon for their designs. However, the anime does play a role in the Pokemon I like.
A good example would be Charizard.
Charizard is a complete no brainer. He was and still is undeniably one of Ash's most bad-ass Pokemon, and not only that, his design, although simple, is really cool and appeals to many people to this day.

This is similar to my thread "Design or Power," Pokemon Trainer UV, but it's a lot more broad.

Power means diddly-squat to me, it's almost entirely based on design. However, one of my absolute favorite Pokemon are Skitty and Delcatty, and that's because I completed my very first run of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon with them. Also, I really like Yanma not because of design but because when I first started playing Pokemon games and didn't have Internet access, I thought Yanma would evolve into Flygon. So I started using him in battle and ended up really liking it for some reason.

I have a very broad liking for design, but, like most other people, I like animal Pokemon best and tend not to like inanimate object/humanoid Pokemon very much. Even though humans are animals lol. I like reptilian and mammalian Pokemon a lot of the time. Typing, while somewhat meaningful, isn't always what I'm looking for to determine if I like a Pokemon. Although sometimes it does play a big role.

Anyways, to narrow down the Pokemon I like even more, I usually really like hooved Pokemon like Sawsbuck and Zebstrika or big cat Pokemon, hence why I absolutely love the Legendary Beasts. I could go into more detail, but I think I'll stop here xD

I don't have an exact answer, but its also a combination on certain things too. My favorite Pokemon don't have much anime time (except for one).

I love cats, and have three at home that could be my main answer. The way the Pokemon looks is my main answer. Appearance. If its a cat-like Pokemon I'm going to love it almost immediately. Many of the games, the description almost matches my cats at home.

Games, my main favorite (Persian) is normal type but with TM's it can learn some attacks from other types (such as Thunderbolt and Water Pulse - I have only played the games up to Emerald. Not sure on Diamond/Pearl or Black/White).

I base my favorite Pokemon based on their looks and/or competitive viability. For instance, Gallade has a slick design and it has good stats and a wide move pool.

I base my fave Pokémon on its looks entirely. Whether or not I use them in battle that will be arguable but they're my favorites nonetheless.

Take Grovyle, for example. Pretty mediocre, only Stage 1, and it's the typical Grass-type moveset, but I love it nonetheless, only because it's awesomely designed.
