Not really sure that this belongs here, but what the hey.
Obviously, if you are open with your interest in Pokemon, or hell, even just MENTION liking it, somebody's going to make a smart-as* comment. So why do you think that is? How is Pokemon so different from any other anime/manga?
I think it's because of Ash and his ever-changing cast of little buddies trekking around the latest region and impossibly coming out of every hardship just with that little Pikachu. The manga portrays a much more realistic, relatable, and overall more enjoyable Pokemon experiences.
Although my fellow females are usually very accepting and even think that I'm cool for loving Pokemon, I've met more than a few smart-as* guys who think that it's "retarded" that somebody, especially a GIRL, would still like Pokemon. However, I am fortunate enough to have enough trust in myself and know exactly who I am. When somebody looks at me, reading one of my many dog-eared copies of Pokemon Special, smirks, and says, "Really? Are you seriously reading Pokemon?", I just smile and say proudly, "Well, yes I am. Good to know you're not blind. I actually really love Pokemon!"
So, what are your experiences, how do you deal with them, and why do you think us Pokemaniacs get so much crap?
