In a number of places, there is a death tax. This is a tax you are charged upon your death. If you do not arrange for it to be paid prior to your death your heirs/heiresses will have to pay it.

Would be rather stupid. Hrmph. Well, uh, I wouldn't pay it :/. I'd also spend the money it takes to re-model my face, just so I don't have to pay it.

Okay, so I wouldn't. I would have the payment arranged... unless it was expensive or something.

I think the idea behind it is that when you know you're going to die soon you don't go on a huge shopping spree and pile up a huge debt because your family will get stuck with it. Obviously companies wouldn't like it if you changed a ton of stuff to a credit card then kicked the bucket and no one had to pay the bill.

Ideally, people wouldn't still have debt at the end of their lives (how sad is that), but it happens and I suppose this is the only fair way to make sure people get what they're owed. Unless it's a big money-grubbing corporation. Just hope you're not the next of kin of someone who's deep in debt.

Heard about this from my math teacher last year. Her mother passed away like a week after she bought this new house. She was always tired since she worked two jobs or something like that.

First time I've heard of it, someone will pay your tax if you die. Maybe it isn't legalized in the country?

It should be the opposite, the government should pay us(lol). Like insurances and stuff.

Its like having to pay to urinate.
Its not like we can help it -_-;; Dying just happens y'know?

    I think its stupid.

No because everybody dies so you shouldn't be chaged to die it is just stupied.

I think what you are refering to is Inheritance/Estate tax. Its not a tax on merely dying, its a tax on the amount of inheritance money your relatives recieve. The goverenment takes a small percentage. I dont agree with it though.

Yes there should be a death tax. The death tax better called the "Estate Tax" or prevents people on their death beds from giving their family everything they own for free. There's a tax for give items worth over $10000. By giving money/items through a will is the best way to avoid that tax. Many immigrants who were successful and had a house in the US ended up giving their house to their relatives in other countries. For free. That wasn't efficient. SO, death tax is a tax on INHERITANCE GIFTS, not for you dying. There's a difference. People call it the 'death tax' because it has an evil connotation. They feel like maybe with this name, it can be abolished.

....hope that cleared some stuff up.

It costs to live. It would be fair if costed money to die.

People should be able to give their own property to whomever they wish after they die. The property is rightfully theirs after all and they should have the right to do with their property as theys see fit, both in life and in death, without government interference.

I suppose you need to pay the lawyer for reading the will. I wonder why can't I get the police to do that for free, like making police reports?

The person who died, would have set it up with the lawyer, plus it shows to be the legal way of distributing what is on that will. That is to say, suppose you were to receive x amount of cash, but only received half of that, because a sibling took the rest, you could dispute it and win.

In the same way, a will is used so that the bank won't take anything. It is a legal document, so even if you have next of kin, if you had no will, the bank for example, could take the house.
