Here is where you can discuss another movie parody via King Kong in a synergy of the seasonal hat and -- in this case -- Ribbon snatching in the Keep Away game of "Slaking Kong".

    My review to come forthwith.

Yeah, it IS seasonal, isn't it? One of the main characters collects all their badges/medals/ribbons, heads for the final challenge, and gets everything stolen on the way there and has to fight to get it back. Happens every year.

One thing I enjoyed about this was, of course, the King Kong parody. It was so...predictable. When May got snatched up (BTW, in the original, it was the generally hottest girl in the movie, so is there some hint here?), I was literally thinking to myself, "Okay, now out comes Swellow to copy the airplane", and sure enough I was right. Her expression when she was caught by Sceptile was PRICELESS as well...

So, basically a filler with the exception of the traditional role and introduction of Ash's newest Pokemon (but not yet, which is new).

    GAH! Ichapokemr beet me here...

Anyway, I agree. It was hilarious how it copied King Kong. He grabbed May since shes the prettiest girl on the show, then Swellow dive-bombewd it. So pradictable, but funny. It was a little Advanceshippy when Ash's Sceptile caught May but... bleh.

The only part I didn't like was that it was a Team Rocket Mecha. I think the writers should have just left it as a Giant Slaking. It would have been a much better ending

You know, once in a while, you get an episode (a plot one), in which you have a measure of expectation and you're disappointed and then you got an episode in which you have none and it blows you away. This is the latter for me.

We have here the typical item snatching plot (which is always towards the end of the arc), but the producers -- who, apparently, were inspired Peter Jackson's King Kong as that was out at the time -- decided to play a movie theme off of it. Rather rare as most of these episodes don't have a sub-theme and that's ignoring the fact this is the second movie theme episode in a row (the Indiana Jones themed "Battling the Enemy Within"). Yet, unlike the topical issue as most would go for, they went for the classic from the moody ambience fof the omnious gates, the monkey/tree climbing mammal themed "natives", to even the non typical character design of character-of-the-day/exposition giver Taylor (whose look is clearly based on someone but it eludes me who at the moment). On the series' end of things, we have the return of Wobbuffet's maiden disguise from the previous "Giant Claydol" episode, the role reversal with May having her Ribbons snatched as the A plot while Ash's hat slips into the B-Plot (usually he takes center stage), and even the dub dialogue is done rather well (such as with "Jessie's 9/10ths of the law" line).

Of course, the homage plays out, right to the climbing of the mountain in lieu of the "big building", complete with Swellow as the "plane". We then have another sort of references as the truth is revealed: Slaking Kong is a robot. A) It's a clever reference to Mechani-Kong (of "King Kong Escapes" infamy for you Japanese monster film fans) and B) it's comes off as rather non-predictable as throughout the episode, it appeared that the Rockets had tricked the Slaking as they've done many times before.

Link to a bio of Mechani-Kong as to spare my fingers the exposition needed.

All that, plus the Aipom returns the hat without a fuss and a nice hint at foreshadowing. The next episode begins the revving up of the series' pace as we enter the Kanto Grand Festival and shine the spotlight further on May. Since the first one was so well done, hopefully history will repeat itself here.

It's a cut above most fillers. 9.5/10 at least (docking only because of Taylor's uselessness and some odd dub lines, but the Mechani-Kong reference goes a long way).

Ah, it's been a while since I saw one of these...

It's true that Ash having the spotlight is the tradition, but it was interesting to see that change for once. Also nice to see the hat-stealing idea come back, as I think the last time it was on was when Ash caught his first primate (more foreshadowing, anyone?).

And on the topic of Ash, I would like to note that I forgot to mention how Sarah seems to me to be getting better fast...in Ash's freefall with Aipom I actually heard real emotion in his lines (at least, about as much as Veronica would have used).

And on topic of what I forgot to mention, there was another odd reference in here--Meowth had a Hitler mustache o.0. And, is it just me, or (and I just thought of this for some reason) does Wobuffet's costume look a little like a ripoff of Kikyo from InuYasha, with the hair and all?

I didn't notice that the first time I watched it, but I went back and watched that part again, and I have to agree. Sarah is getting way better then she was at first. Just the other day I watched Fear Factor Phoney again, and she was awful. But thats getting a little off-topic. She seemed to get his emotions out a lot better, especially at the end when Ash got his hat back, she conveyed his emotions much better-ly (xD)

xDDD. Wow, that made me laugh. It does in my opinion, it made Wobbuffet look like a priestess wannabe. Meowth's wasn't any better, like a knock-off Prof. Birch in a way.

    Keep it civil. Heh.

I think with Wobbuffet's costume and Kikyo's would fall under the same tailor. Besides, how many ways can you have a priestess costume? They all have to be uniform in some way, right?

I have to look at Meowth's mustache again before I can say, anyway. He was looking Asiatic, maybe it was a Fu Manchu thing? (The issues were out around the same time as 33 Kong or same time period) Eh.

...Well, the clothes, yeah, but not the hair...which is probably more where my relation is coming from...

I know, I know. As odd as this sounds, I think Wobbuffet is rather alluring like that. I think he'd out adorn anything Kagome would wear. That's for sure. Hehe.

    (Waits for the fan implosion.)
