I guess with the 3rd and 4th gen Pokemon making their first smash apperances, (and with all the memory used for game modes, etc.) there wasn't enough room for all the starters. ><
They only have one grass/fire/water starter from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th gens. (The 1st gen starters are playable...)

Sceptile could've ran after the nearest player and Leaf Blade them for massave damage. Blaziken could've done a Blaze Kick across the screen like Hitmonlee did in SSB. Swampert could've made a big wave to drown opponents.
(Torchic would've had to be removed or it wouldn't be fair to the other starters) XD
 
why wont they just get rid of the second anmd first jen so they yould get diamond and pearl pokemon in it.

turtwig could of make spikey vines come out of the ground. chimchar could burn them. heatran could make flaming meteors fall . regigigas could stomp on everyone. garchomp could use dragonrush . creselia could make everyone exept the person who threw the pokeball slow moving. rotom could zap them to death. uxie azelf and mesprit could fly around healing people. staraptor could make a mist to make it hard to see or fly around hurting everyone.frostlass could freeze everyone. ill think of more summons later.
