Hurricanes take home first Stanley Cup
    By Phil Coffey | NHL.com | June 19, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The third time was the charm for the Carolina Hurricanes Monday night, skating to a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final to win the franchise's first Stanley Cup.

Rookie goaltender Cam Ward won the Conn Smythe Trophy as Playoff MVP.

This will be an awesome match up for the Stanley Cup...I mean I can't choose I love the Oilers...I like their style however Carolina is probably gonna win...

    Don't Make Me Choose!!!

Well for some odd reason in these playoffs, teams who get the long break seem to lose in the very next series but I honestly don't think it will effect the Oilers. I mean ever since they beat out the Red Wings they've been the hottest playoff team this year.

I don't know either but my I have this feeling Edmonton is going to enjoy their first cup without Mark Messier.

Carolina wins game 1 by a score of 5-4 and now leads the best of seven series 1-0. That was a crazy Hockey game very fun to watch, Cam Ward was like a monkey in nets in that third period making outstanding saves. But Edmonton's new found star goalie in the playoffs Dwayne Roloson got hurt and is out for the entire series so all of a sudden Carolina is the big favorites.

Chris Pronger became the first player in NHL history to score on a penalty shot in the Stanley Cup finals. It was the ninth penalty shot awarded in the finals history and the first since Vancouver's Pavel Bure was stopped by New York Rangers goalie Mike Richter on June 7, 1994, in Game 4. :D

^ try not to double post please.

I was rooting for the Flyers or Flames, so both my teams are out. It doesn't really matter to me who wins this. -_-

Man things have changed around here. It was a bump; an update really on the series really, there was a four-day difference with no one replying. What else am I suppose to do? All, well...

Anyway my team was swept in the first round, (New York Rangers) and I've watched them all season long but still it won't stop me from watching the finals, whether or not my team is in or not since I'm a hockey fan and it's always cool to see the Stanley Cup celebration. And this year it's a beauty of a match-up just both teams are small-market so the TV Ratings are low and they don't have the commercial back up as the NFL does with the Super Bowl, meaning it gives the groupie fans who don't care for the sport don't have a reason to watch. Things would be different if teams like that had more media coverage would've made the finals like Chicago, New York, Detroit, Toronto or even what you said Philadelphia would bring ratings up this year.

I was gonna watch it actually, and I saw the build up on Channel 5 late night sports, but sadly when it's on at 1AM and you've got to get up for a GCSE exam at 7 it's not the best of ideas... curse you, Britain. Ah well, I prefer rugby league anyway...

I was rooting for the Oilers. Seemed like a good advert for the sport, with two "smaller" teams getting to the final. Sounded like a good game.

That sucks. But game 2 wasn't as interesting as Carolina just outmatched Edmonton in the special teams killing their penalties and scoring on their power plays and destroyed the Oilers in game two 5-0 to take a choke hold on the series 2-0.

Another great game 3-3 they headed into overtime and Carolina got a power play looking to win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history but things didn't go there way as Oilers right winger, Fernando Pisani stole the puck in Hurricane territory for a breakaway and scored a shorthanded goal in overtime winning the game for Edmonton keeping them alive in the series. Game 6 will be held in Edmonton on Saturday at 8:00pm eastern time.

Here is a video of the overtime goal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nR6T7fHgMc

Sad no one is posting, Edmonton took advantage of their home ice and shut the door on the 'Canes 4-0 meaning there will be a game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. It will take place Monday, winner of this one wins the Stanley Cup, this doesn't happen often.

I'm going for Carolina. My favorite team got out :( Detroit Red Wings. <3

An awesome series by these two clubs. Edmonton didn't bring there A game in game seven but showed lot of heart and pride out there. Congrats to the Hurricanes on their first Stanley Cup and erasing the heartbreak that was left behind when they were the Hartford Whalers.

Kid Rock is a happy guy since he's a HUGE Carolina fan, CBC interviewed him on the ice after the game, if only he could've sang the national anthems at the start to boost some ratings in America, but that's not what Hockey is about. The prize they work their butts off isn't a media hyped Super Bowl, check the history on Lord Stanley's Cup for evidence of that.

I added lot of spiffy things to the topic and had fun doing it so enjoy! :)
