4th Gen Super Effective or Not Very Effective

Like i wanna know if i should use a super effect or a not very effective move ( or just normal) in this situation

Say im fighting a Forretress and my pokemon has a balanace of 350 on both ATK
And It has Fire Punch which is Physical which is Super Effective and it has Psychic which is Special and is not very Effective.

Which move would you use?
And if this is in wrong section sorry.

Fire Punch of course because super effective gives the attack an extra boost and not effective minuss the attack

It depends. Will my opponent switch or not? But I voted Fire Punch.

But because of fortress very high defense it would probably do low dmg?

And i want to know if its better to use an attack that is strong against its defense or its effectiveness

Still use fire punch it almost triples the attack it would have normally have done

It entirely depends on the factors in play.

You have to take into consideration your Pokémon's Attack/Special Attack, and the opponents Defence/Special Defence. Then there's the move power, type ups, STAB, stat boosting moves/abilities and all sorts of things.

I'm not usually one to calculate the damages dealt with each move, but you could check this guide to gain a better understanding.

I think some programs like Shoddy Battle can help you work out damages, but then i've never used it so I wouldn't really know :P

you used a bunch of words i dont know like stab and shoddy

but i wasnt saying all those factors just what i listed the other pokemon is doing nothing
and you use those moves
its like a test dummy

"STAB" is Same Type Attack Bonus.
This is the 1.5x boost in power that a move gets if the move used is the same type as it's user.
Shoddy battle is some computer program that simulates Pokémon battles. In short, it's battling without all the training, breeding and everything else that comes beforehand.

You can use the damage formula in the link I posted to work out the answer to your first question :P
