I've recently been looking at getting into the whole competitive battling thing. But I'm not sure what the purpose of "Walls" and "Tanks" are. Can anyone help clarify it?

Most walls are high-defensive Pokemon who use indirect methods to win, usually involving status ailments. Some walls are also built for other purposes, such as Blissey's use as a cleric via moves like Aromatherapy. Other walls include Snorlax, Umbreon, Bastiodon, etc.

Such things are better fitting in the Strategies and Movesets forum, which is located in the same category as the D/P forum.
I'll move it there for you.

I believe Walls are the pokemon built for absorbing attacks and are mainly used to stall (drain opponents PP) such as Blissey

Tanks on the other hand are pokemon that take a lot of damage, but can also dish some out, eg Snorlax
