I'd like to have around 4 teams, and preferably they should not be polarizing in a way that unbalances them (like basing them off regions, where some would be wildly more popular than others). A simple idea would be Fire, Water, Grass and Electric, which I hope would be sufficiently simple and relatively equal as to not require an autobalancing system.

I am open to possibly doing something more divisive but we'll need to talk about how we're going to balance the teams properly if we do so.

    thoughts?

    Team Plasma - green
    Team Skull - purple
    Team Rocket - red
    Team Galactic - blue

Maybe Rocket or Skull are vastly more popular than the others though.

yeah that's the kind of thing I was worried about, those are by no means approx equally popular options.
not entirely ruling it out but we need a way of auto balancing the teams if we go with that, and people aren't going to be entirely content with us managing their team choices.

No matter what, I feel we're gonna have to regulate team balance, especially if the numbers get too big. Until the actual Get-Together, the team choice won't be permanent; people can coordinate to switch any time before the games. We'd need to provide ample warning.

People would still choose their teams using a similar team picker to the GT Olympics. If we follow Angie's idea, we could do something like picking four houses and writing unique, unusual backstories (but leaving enough details out for the members to write their own? haha) for each of them. Almost like how GO's teams ended up having stories written about them. No negative houses (i.e. Slytherin).

what was the team picker for the GT olympics?

i'm imagining we make people do a quiz and that assigns them into a team, then we can influence it by trying to balance it (not just numbers wise but we should see how we can balance the types of people in the teams (so we don't get a team full of new members/inactives for example)
haven't thought about how this could work in practice though

I love the quiz idea! Writing it would be fun and we could probably make a temporary PC page (pokecommunity.com/teamquiz/ or something) to put it on. Once it's taken it could automatically grant the member view permissions for the GT forum and maybe a team logo on their postbits.

It also gives us more versatility with our teams because we don't need to be hugely worried about balance as long as the questions are good and relatively neutral. Going with a theme similar to harry potter houses with some backstory of their own, like Angie and Jake mentioned, would be an awesome idea and I'm happy to help with the writing for that.

Definitely agree that there needs to be a way to balance the teams, and also a way to make sure that members do not get upset over us placing them on a team they did not want to be a part of, which was an issue when we did Regions for teams a couple of years ago.

What kinds of questions would we use to determine team placement, though?

Since I think the prevailing idea is to make HP-style houses with some lore of their own, let's come up with the four houses first and then we can write some backstory on their history, rules, and moral priorities or something like that. Then we can come up with questions in the style of a typical "which [alignment] am I?" quiz.

so uh, i was doing some thoughts on the traits and mascots of different houses. i just kinda semi-randomly picked from the dex and went with some personality traits that i thought would match. it's vaguely harry potter-ish but there are some noticeable differences

we don't have to use these pokemon or these traits if we don't like them, this is just an example of the kind of basic draft i want to start with.
    Lucario
    strength, bravery, recklessness, friendship

    Castform
    intelligence, planning, adaptability, knowledge

    Sableye
    ambition, hardworking, drive, initiative

    Altaria
    adventure, exploration, energy, excitement
once we have our hp-style mascots and virtues sorted out, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out names and any lore we want.

I like the quality traits that you gave and would definitely do well for the backstory to each of their houses. Probably wouldn't pick those Pok?mon just because color wise they would either be too similar or wouldn't "pop" as well. Personally, I think that vibrant colors should be the way to go - whether that's the same colors as HP (red, yellow, blue, green) I suppose would be up for debate.

    Great idea nonetheless, mate.

colours was not something i considered. will try to find pick out four different colours and find accompanying pokemon with the same traits list. and yeah, the initial pokemon list was just something I was using to help come up with the traits, so no issue with changing them.

great palettes can be found ^ if we want to come up with something different and interesting for our House colour scheme

Was it discussed on Discord/PC as to whether or not users' names would change colors according to their team (i.e if someone was on a pink team, their username would be pink.) If this is the case, then I suppose we would also need to be conscientious of straying away from HQ/Admin colors right?

hasn't been discussed as far as I know. could be a bit of an issue, see the first paragraph of my post here

probably safer to just stick with team logos on postbits and not do name colours

don't make them show in the discord sidebar if there's gonna be 4 separate groups, but otherwise I'm down.. could make a GT category that contains a discord channel for each team.

team mascots and colours. two different mascot options for each team, so we can choose which one we prefer.
    Incineroar / Scizor (Red)
    strength, bravery, recklessness, friendship

    Ditto / Espeon (Purple)
    intelligence, planning, adaptability, knowledge

    Ampharos / Leavanny (Yellow)
    ambition, hardworking, drive, initiative

    Tyranitar / Hawlucha (Green)
    adventure, exploration, energy, excitement

idk the Eevees are cute and they match the colours but they don't match the traits I tried to give to each team.. I tried to pick diverse Pokemon from different categories that would fit each theme, I'd prefer that to dropping it for a generic group like eeveelutions.

I would have to agree - Eevee evolutions wouldn't fit the personality traits we want and could be considered too cute. Plus, I feel like that could be deemed "too predictable" or a "safe" option. I'd like us to be ambitious (:My vote is fir Scizor/Espeon/Ampharos/Tyrnatar. It would be cool if we could do a different generation for each teams but otherwise I like these Pokémon chosen.

Out of the ones you've chosen? Neither for Red, Espeon for Purple, Ampharos for Yellow and Hawlucha for Green. For the sorts of things you're picking for Red, I reckon Arcanine would be a better choice over the two you have there.

Agreed with Aaron on Arcanine, now that you say that. My biases for Arcanine aside as it is my favorite Pokémon, "red" is generally associated with fire so I think it should be a Fire Pokémon. Just not Incineroar lol.

I think Arcanine is a good choice for red. As for my take on the others:

    (Purple)

Honestly I think Espeon would be my pick. Ditto is adaptable yes, but... that's really all it is. Plus it'll seem a bit... off, imo?

    (yellow)

Mmm, you might disagree, but personally I'd have to go with Leavanny. Leavanny are naturally caretaker pokemon, which better fits themold on being a hardworker and showing initiative. It's very parental and uses its cutters and a sticky silk it produces to create clothing made of leaves for small Pokémon.

Ampharos guides the lost to safety yes, but you could also argue... the people/pokemon who are lost use ampharos's natural abilities... but so far from what we see in the games/anime, that's only because people tell and guide ampharos to do so; I'm not quite sure if Ampharos itself has the initiative to guide others to safety itself?

idk. I side with Leavanny, but if you think it'll work, I'll support Ampharos too.

    (Green)

Hawlucha kinda fits the mold way better than Tyranitar imo.
