Prologue
The young Umbreon ran, her heart pounding like gunshots firing away at a fast rate. Tranquilizer darts flew past her ears as she ran. Her ruby eyes were clouded over in fear and pain. Cuts ran down her body. Some bled, leaving a small blood trail, while others were healing.
She closed her eyes. Make it go away, make it all go away... she willed herself to think that.
She hoped it was a nightmare that she would wake up from and be reassured by her family, licking her and calming her down. Then she would snuggle up by her other siblings and fall fast asleep.
How can it be a nightmare when I feel pain? How can it be a nightmare when you see your family killed? Tears slid down her face. This is no nightmare, it's worse than that... it's ****!
She tripped over a log and fell head over tail and landed at the base of the hill. She saw the menacing shadows of humans slowly creep towards the hill where she had fallen. She struggled to stand. Trees blocked her way to escape. "I have to fight..." she murmured to herself and tensed her muscles, ready to pounce.
She saw a human head peer over the side and beckon the others to follow. "Found 'er, get the tranq's ready!" he called and disappeared over the log.
She growled and her claws unsheathed. Her eyes were narrowed into ruby slits. More heads appeared and she saw the gleam of metal from the guns. She snarled and ran up the hill and lept, yowling.
They fired and all but three missed. She yelped as they hit her and she smacked the ground hard and rolled down the hill once more. Her vision became blurry and the pain from the darts in her chest began to dull. Her head swam in a thick murk and soon, she saw black.
