    ANP #076: Peace and Good Quil



    (Cue OP-On Our Way-as the song plays, we see various shots of the Pokemon cast in the backstage area, getting ready for a show: Misty walks past one member of the lighting crew, making her trip and drop her paints, which color some of the notes on Brock's sheet music. He tries to clean the music, only to get walloped by a basketball in the face (thrown by May) Pikachu runs past all of this, down a hallway, and through a door with a star on it marked "Ash". He cries "Pika!" and points at a clock, which is ticking dangerously close to "Show Time!" Ash notices the time on the clock and ducks behind a screen to get ready, when he finishes, he's now decked out in a red top hat (with the same design as his cap) and tails. Ash then runs head on at the camera and makes a flying entrance onto a stage as the song concludes)

    Female announcer: And now, it's time for the Ash and Pikachu Show!

    (Pikachu climbs onto Ash's shoulder and smiles as the title card flies in from the right, a short clip of "On Our Way" in the background)

    (Suddenly, Brock appears in the scene wearing his normal clothes and sunglasses)

    Brock: We're on fire tonight! (smiles over one last hit of music as the scene fades out)

    (Applause as Ash runs onstage to greet the crowd)

    Ash: Thank you, and welcome to the first show of Season 4! (wild applause) We've got the usual fare of cartoons, comics, and songs--plus a few new surprises! But before we get started, let's see how Brock is doing with singing the dictionary...

    (We cut to another theater, in which Brock is in front of the dictionary singing the B's)

    Brock: ...Blast and bathyscaph, blender and bed... (As Brock continues to rattle off words, we see May in the other auditorium with a commentator's headset on)

    May: Ash, Brock is going at a nice pace through the B's but he still has a ways to go before he completes the letter...we can only hope that he keeps up this enthusiasm through the remaining 24 letters...back to you.

    (We return to Ash in the main theater)

    Ash: All right, thank you, May...tonight we're gonna focus on the firebrand of the Johto starters, Cyndaquil! (applause as the spotlight appears on a Cyndaquil. Kari enters, piqued by the fire mouse Pokemon next to Ash)

    Kari: Who's this? (reaches down to pet the Cyndaquil, but he extends his quills, burning her) YEOW!!!

    Ash: I don't think you should pet him that way...(flips open Dexette and lets Kari listen)

    Dexette: Cyndaquil, the fire mouse Pokemon. He flares flames from his back to protect himself, which burn vigorously if he is angry...

    Kari: NOW you tell me... (laughter)

    Dexette: When tired, he sputters with incomplete combustion. (Sure enough, we see Cyndaquil breathing hard, sputtering all the while)

    Kari: Maybe he'd like to watch something? (wheels out the projector)

    Ash: Good idea! (threads a reel in the projector and starts it.)

    (CARTOON-"Good 'Quil Hunting", part 1)

    (We see a pair of claymation Ash hands trying to start a campfire. After a few unsuccessful attempts, a Cyndaquil appears and uses its quills to get the fire going. The female announcer says "'The Ash and Pikachu Show' will be right back after these messages." as Ash picks up a guitar and starts to play "On Our Way" for the Cyndaquil. One of the marshmallows by the Cyndaquil is Pikachu's face.)

    (We see the claymation Ash hands again, this time struggling to make a smore. First the crackers fall, then the chocolate slips out, the Ash loses his marshmallow in the grass. The female announcer says "We now return to 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'!" as the Cyndaquil offers Ash its smore. As we watch Ash take a bite, we notice that the dotted lines on the top cracker make Pikachu's face.)

    (We rejoin Ash and Kari back in the theater as the screen shows Ash and Pikachu running from a rock, then flashes white, indicating that the film ran out)

    Cyndaquil: Cynda?

    Ash: You want to know what happens next?

    Kari: I asked the people out there what THEY think happens next!

    (On Our Way interlude plays as a group of voices say "What Happens Next?" in sync with the words appearing. Kari's face appears in the dot on the question mark)

    (We join Kari before the projector at a video screen)

    Kari: Now, if you were watching the cartoon earlier, you know that this was the last scene shown before the film ran out...

    (we see the scene of Ash and Pikachu running from the rock again)

    Kari: Now, I suppose you're wondering...

    Random voices: What Happens Next? (the title card reappers, minus Kari's face in the question mark)

    Kari: To find out, I asked 50 people on the street what they think happens next based on that scene alone...and here's some of what they said: (turns toward the screen, which shows a blonde haired boy)

    Random boy: They're gonna get squished by the rock...

    Random woman: Ash and Pikachu are gonna narrowly miss being squashed...

    Random man: Ash'll find something to pull him and Pikachu somewhere safe...

    Random girls: Pikachu will shatter the rock into a zillion pieces! (the audience laughs)

    Random boy: They'll just barely miss getting flattened...

    Random man: They'll just barely make it...

    Random boy: They'll make it by the skins of their teeth! (at this point, the film ends.)

    Kari: The general consensus is that they'll just barely make it, but stay tuned for the next part of the cartoon, when we find out...

    Random voices: What Happens Next? (the title reappears again)

    (We rejoin Ash in the theater, where he has the reel for the next cartoon.)

    Ash: Thanks Kari...let's see what happens next right now! (threads the reel in the projector and starts it)

    (CARTOON-"Good Quil Hunting", part 2)

    (We rejoin Kari and Ash in the theater. Kari has her own acoustic guitar with her, which she tunes as she waits on the band to finish tuning)

    Ash: So, you're gonna sing, huh?

    Kari: Well, our resident singer's busy, so I'll fill in for the time being! (applause) This song's called "On the Wind of the Aurora"

    (music begins)

    Kari: What a beautiful day! Sun is shining bright! (is shining bright!)
    I'm so happy, I almost have to cry!

    Was I here before? Is this deja vu?     (Is this deja vu?)
    No matter now, we will shine on beneath this crystal clear blue sky!

    Though I have a dream, it is brand new,
    (Let's stay together forever!)
    We will find our place, within the world!

    On the wind of the aurora, my wish will come flying right to you!
    I'm sure it will make it there, but I still want to see you before then!
    Underneath a star spangled sky, our two lives long to be together,
    And when they unite as one, the same wish that we have will come true!

    That often leads, to two quite different fates?

    Ash: Maybe she'd be interested in a duet with Brock sometime...

    May: Or dueling guitars... (starts the projector)

    (CARTOON-"Good Quil Hunting", part 3)

    (We join the cast onstage)

    Ash: Well, guys...the race is on to the hundredth show!

    Misty: I can't wait!

    Ash: We're out of time for tonight, so see ya next time!

    Pikachu: Pika! (waves goodbye as the curtain closes. On Our Way reprise plays as the credits roll)

    ANP #077: Perap Wanna Cracker?

    Ash: Thank you! Tonight we're featuring a very special comedy team--one whose ability to make people laugh is beyond compare...but the Pokemon half of the duo is the real star of the show at every venue they play at....I speak, of course, of a very talented Perap named Coco.

    (Applause as a Perap trots onstage and bows to the audience)

    Ash: Hi, Coco...remember me? (he kneels down and prepares to pet Coco...but Coco bites his finger!) YEOOOOOWWWW!!!! (dances around in pain)

    Coco(imitating Brock singing): Come on now, la-la-la, it is so wonderful, la-la-la la la la, hear the word's beautiful sound! La la la, and it is la la la, and it is... MY LOVELY ONE!

    (Ash scratches his head, confused as Coco continues dancing in circles around him and singing in Brock's voice)

    Ash: Wait a second, isn't Brock still singing the dictionary?

    Coco(imitating Ash): Wait a second, isn't Brock still singing the dictionary? (she whistles, making some in the audience laugh)

    Ash: I didn't ask you, Coco!

    Coco: Then who did you ask? (laughter as Ash ponders how to explain to the Perap before him that she was not the recipient of his question)

    Ash: I asked the people out there! (gestures to the audience)

    Coco: How should they know? (whistles again)

    Ash: Errrrgh....

    Coco(imitating Ash): Errrgh... (the audience laughs again.)

    (Meanwhile, in another theater, Brock rests before the dictionary as it flips to the first page of the C's)

    May: Ash, in case you were curious on how Brock is doing on singing every word in the dictionary, he has just completed the B's and planned on starting the C's after taking a break, but when he heard that Andi and her Perap Coco were tonight's guests, he'll start on the C's at a later time. Back to you.

    (We rejoin Ash, Coco, and a brown haired girl, Andi, back in the main theater. Coco is trying to escape her master's arms, but is not doing a very good job of it)

    Andi: What was that all about?

    Ash: Oh, Brock just out of the blue decided he was going to see if he could sing every word in the dictionary.

    Coco: Why?

    Ash: So he can brag to his friends that he sang every word in the dictionary.

    Coco: Why?

    Ash: So his friends will feel compelled to try and sing every word in the dictionary.

    Coco: Why?

    Ash(getting annoyed): So his friends can say they sang every word in the dictionary too....

    Coco: Why?

    Ash: BECAUSE HE CAN! (laughter and applause as Ash trudges over to the projector, where Misty is waiting)

    Misty: Boy, when you told me Coco was a real character, you weren't kidding!

    Ash: What's happened so far isn't even the half of it... (threads a reel in the projector and starts it)

    [CARTOON-"Perap-idfire Dialogue!", part 1]

    (We see a pair of live Ash hands offering a cracker to a Perap in a cage. The Perap says "You're watching 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'!", squawks, then takes the cracker from Ash. One of the toys in the Perap's cage is a rubber Pikachu)

    (We return to see the live Ash hands chasing after Coco as she flies away from him, making him crash into a bookshelf. The female announcer says "And now, back to our show" as books rain onto Ash. One of the books is open at a page depicting Pikachu's face)

    (Back in the theater, Andi and Coco watch as Misty preps the drawing board. Coco, meanwhile, is interested in Misty's pencils, so she snatches one in her beak when Misty isn't looking.)

    Andi: Coco, that's not for you... (takes the pencil)

    Misty: She can chew on this Leppa branch I've been saving... (Coco accepts the branch from Misty, chewing on it all the while as Misty goes to work)

    (On Our Way interlude as the title card appears: "'Back to the Drawing Board' with Misty" Misty's face appears in the o in "Board")

    (A white screen appears)

    (Brock is drawn on the screen in his normal clothes)

    Brock: Okay, pencil...what do you have in store for me tonight?

    Coco(voiceover): SPLUT!!! (laughs)

    Brock: I didn't ask y- (a pie comes out of nowhere and hits Brock with a SPLUT! Coco laughs as Brock cleans the pie off) Okay, pencil...let me tell the story for once.

    Misty(voiceover): Okay, start narrating, and I'll draw.

    Brock: Okay, I'm in this place...

    (Coco draws a line behind Brock as a background)

    Brock: Not much of a place...

    Misty(voiceover): Specifics, please. (some rustling is heard as Misty wrests the pencil away from Coco)

    Brock: Okay, I'm in a cave? (the pencil draws a cave, then starts to erase Brock!) Hey! Stop erasing me!

    Misty(voiceover): Calm down and let me dress you accordingly. (the pencil redraws Brock in an Indiana Jones style outfit, only now Brock clearly looks like he was made out of paper compared to the backdrop) Okay, so we're in a cave...

    Brock: And I'm looking for treasure... (a badly animated treasure chest comes down with a choir "ah" for a few seconds, the disappears.) Only problem is, it's guarded by a Tyranitar. (a paper Tyranitar appears for a few seconds and roars)

    Misty(voiceover): Sounds good to me. (the scene suddenly turns pixellated, then reappears looking like something out of an NES game)

    Brock: Why is the scene looking different every few seconds?

    Misty(voiceover): I'm drawing on my computer so Coco won't eat my pencils...I'm just trying out the different styles to see how they look. (a line of 8-bit hearts appears in the top right corner of the scene, as well as windows for A and B buttons. Brock's whip appears in the A button slot)

    (The Zelda underworld theme plays as 8-bit Brock explores the cave. After defeating the 8-bit Tyranitar, he finds the treasure and holds an 8-bit ruby over his head, Link style, as the words "Stage Clear!" appear on the screen)

    (We see Misty testing her game as Ash pets Coco.)

    Ash: How's that hack of Zelda going?

    Misty: I just finished the first stage...is Brock really gonna sing tonight?

    Ash: That's what he said...(suddenly hears an intro of soft music and waves)

    (Onstage, the music picks up into a samba beat. The audience laughs as Brock appears in his Mexican attire, Coco by his side)

    Brock: La-la-la, la la la, it is so wonderful!
    La-la-la, la la la, letters of love and joy!
    La-la-la, and it is, la-la-la,
    And it is...

    Coco(imitating Brock's voice): OH! MY LOVELY ONE!!! (the audience laughs)

    Brock: Oh yes, I understand...
    I fall in love so easily...
    My heart has been broken...
    Too many times to see...
    Yet there is, too little space
    For me...to get back up again!

    And even if they think of me...
    As someone much too carefree...
    And even if they make fun of me...
    Laughing at my foolish deeds...

    Is laugh, to lift my spirit!     (Coco imitates Brock laughing, making the audience laugh)

    Kari: What was all that "La la la"-ing about?

    Ash: Oh, just some stupid song Brock likes to act silly on... (starts the projector)

    (CARTOON-"Perap-idfire Dialogue!", part 2)

    (We join Ash, Pikachu, and Coco onstage)

    Ash: Well, we're almost out of time...

    Coco(imitating Ash): But join us tomorrow at the same Pokemon time, same Pokemon Channel! (the audience laughs as Ash sighs, embarrassed that Coco stole his spiel)

    Pikachu: Pika! (he waves goodbye as the curtain closes. On Our Way reprise plays as the credits roll)

    Oh my. I need to remember to check up here every so often now. These seems good as always and I happy to see that you are imbracing the DP new characters. I hope Kari doesn't end up taking Brocks job though. That would be so sad to see. I hope to see more!!!
     
    Kari's not replacing Brock, don't worry...but while he's busy singing the dictionary, someone has to sing, so Kari's filling in while Brock does that.

    I do have a dueling guitars moment and a duet planned.

    Ash: Thank you...let's have a little pop quiz! (the audience groans) No, not THAT kind of pop quiz! This one's fun, I promise! (some curious murmurs fill the air) What game would I be playing if you heard this little number somewhere in the arcade?

    (Ash presses a button on the console containing his mike, causing the familar Pac-Man jingle to play. Suddenly, the drummer starts a rock beat, surprising Ash!)

    Ash: Huh?

    (Brock and the rest of the band join in with the drummer)

    Brock: I got a pocketful of quarters, and I'm headed to the arcade....

    (Before Brock can sing any more of the song, the cane appears and yanks Brock offstage as a record scrape is heard. Misty appears carrying a box of reels, only pausing to stick her pencil behind her ear)

    Misty: He wasn't supposed to tell the audience the answer....

    Ash: I thought he was still singing the dictionary...

    (we cut to May in the other theater, where the dictionary is open to a page of the C's)

    May: Ash, Brock has successfully began the C's, but when he heard what tonight's theme was, he decided he really wanted to sing, and will continue the C's later. Back to you.

    Ash: Thanks, May... (to the audience) Have you guys figured out what tonight's theme is yet?

    (Murmurs of "Pac-Man" fill the air, just as the NES Pac-Man title screen blips on the screen behind Ash and begins its demo loop. Ash, however, is interested in the box of reels)

    Ash: What are those?

    Misty: I was digging through the vault and found we had a huge stash of 80's and 90's cartoons in there...and we just so happen to have some Pac-Man cartoons! (Kari comes onstage, interested.)

    Kari: There was really a Pac-Man cartoon?

    Misty: There sure was! (gets a reel out)

    Kari: Cool! Can we watch them?

    Ash: I don't see why not...

    Misty: Not with Pikachu using the NES, we can't!

    (we hear the familiar "wakka-wakka" noise as Pikachu manuvers Pac-Man through the maze. The screen displays Pikachu's progress through the level....until Ash switches the NES off, causing the screen to turn to static, which also is on the TV the NES is connected to. Pikachu is not pleased with having his game interrupted.)

    Pikachu: Pika pika chu!

    Ash: I know you were using the screen first, but can we borrow it for a little bit? (Pikachu sulks as Kari threads a reel in the projector and starts it)

    [CARTOON-"Super Ghosts", part 1]

    (We see a pair of live Ash hands playing Pac-Man at an arcade. The female announcer says "'The Ash and Pikachu Show' will return after these messages!" as Ash weaves his way through the maze and approaches a power pill. The prize, istead of a cherry, is a Pikachu face!)

    (When we return to the game, Ash grabs the power pellet and proceeds to chase the ghosts as the female announcer says "And now, back to our show!". Ash manuvers Pac-Man towards the Pikachu face, which is worth, not surprisingly, 2500 points)

    (Pikachu laughs profusely as the reel rewinds)

    Misty: Oddly enough...I remember that show from when I was little...Lilly used to beg me to watch it. (she starts backstage and settles before her PC, which has a drawing tablet and an art program open. Pikachu climbs on the desk to watch.)

    (On Our Way interlude plays as we see the title: "'Back to the Drawing Board' with Misty". Misty's face appears in the o in "Board"

    (We see a white screen, presumably the computer screen)

    (Brock is drawn on the screen and colored)

    Pikachu(voiceover: Pika pika?

    Misty(voiceover): Hmm...he does look too realistic for the game I'm gonna make...(erases Brock and starts drawing him again...when we see him again, he looks like something out of an NES game)

    (8 bit Brock glances around as the pencil draws a maze around him, followed by four Haunters trapped in the center of the maze)

    Pikachu(voiceover): Pika! (small yellow dots start appearing in the maze)

    Misty(voiceover): Okay, Pikachu; you can put the dots in... (makes four dots in the corner larger, then makes them flash) There...I think I'll call it...."Brock-Man" (the aforementioned title appears at the top of the screen in a Pac-Man-esque font)

    Pikachu(voiceover): Chupi! Pikachu!

    Misty(voiceover): Okay, you can beta test it too!

    (The words "PLAYER 1 READY!" appear, and 8-bit Brock starts moving around the maze while the Haunters chase after him. The words "THE END" appear by Pikachu's score.)

    (Back in the theater, Ash returns to the stage eating the last of a candy bar, he deposits it in a trashcan...and then notes a Pac-Man machine onstage)

    Ash: Hey, how'd this get here? (sticks a quarter in and begins a game, making the familiar Pac-Man jingle play in the theater again. The drummer starts a rock beat as the scene of Ash playing fades out to show Brock walking down a street, making the game noises fade out as the other instruments join in)

    Brock: I got a pocketful of quarters, and I'm headed to the arcade! (we watch as Brock enters a building that reads "Pallet Game Center")
    I don't have a lot of money, but I'm bringing everything I've made! (Brock plops a pile of quarters in a bucket, which he sets by the Pac-Man machine)
    I got a callous on my finger and my shoulder's hurtin', too! (we see Brock's index finger, which has a Band-Aid on the aforementioned callous)
    I'm gonna eat'em all up, just as soon as they turn blue! (we see Brock's Pac-Man grab a power pill, making the ghosts turn blue)

    'Cause I got Pac-Man Fever! (Pac-Man Fever!)
    It's drivin' me crazy! (drivin' me crazy!)
    I got Pac-Man Fever! (Pac-Man Fever!)

    Brock: I got all the items down, up until the ninth key... (we look at how Brock is doing and see that he is up to the ninth key)
    I got Pinky on my tail, and I know it's either him or me! (Brock shakes off Pinky by ducking into a tunnel)
    So I'm headin' out the back door, and in the other side... (Brock's Pac-Man appears on the other side of the maze)
    Gonna eat the cherries up and take'em all for a ride! (Brock's Pac-Man grabs a cherry)

    I got Pac-Man Fever! (Pac-Man Fever!)
    It's drivin' me crazy! (drivin' me crazy!)

    (Clyde and Pinky appear with Brock as his joystick becomes an acoustic guitar, which he solos on. Ash and Misty are grooving with Blinky, Inky, and Sue in the theater)

    Brock: Now I've got'em on the run and I'm looking for the high score! (we see Brock's score, which is steadily climbing)
    So it's once around the block, and I slide back out the side door! (Brock shakes off Inky this way)
    I'm really cookin' now, eatin' everything in sight! (We see scenes of the maze, with the levels getting higher and higher)
    All my cash is gone, so I'll come back tomorrow night! (sure enough, Brock's bucket of quarters is empty)

    Ash: Okay... (he sticks another quarter in as the drummer resumes his beat) We had fun tonight, so we'll see ya next time! (begins playing)

    (Pikachu just waves goodbye as the curtain closes. Brock and the band continue singing the chorus to "Pac-Man Fever" as the credits roll.)

    ANP #079: Pokemon Doremi



    (Cue OP-On Our Way-as the song plays, we see various shots of the Pokemon cast in the backstage area, getting ready for a show: Misty walks past one member of the lighting crew, making her trip and drop her paints, which color some of the notes on Brock's sheet music. He tries to clean the music, only to get walloped by a basketball in the face (thrown by May) Pikachu runs past all of this, down a hallway, and through a door with a star on it marked "Ash". He cries "Pika!" and points at a clock, which is ticking dangerously close to "Show Time!" Ash notices the time on the clock and ducks behind a screen to get ready, when he finishes, he's now decked out in a red top hat (with the same design as his cap) and tails. Ash then runs head on at the camera and makes a flying entrance onto a stage as the song concludes)

    Female announcer: And now, it's time for the Ash and Pikachu Show!

    (Pikachu climbs onto Ash's shoulder and smiles as the title card flies in from the right, a short clip of "On Our Way" in the background)

    (Suddenly, Brock appears in the scene wearing his normal clothes and sunglasses)

    Brock: What does all that "Pirika pirilala" stuff mean, anyway? (smiles over one last hit of music as the scene fades out)

    (Applause as Ash runs onstage and waves to the crowd)

    Ash: Thank you! I want to start tonight's show by asking you guys a question: What do you usually picture when you think of a witch?

    (the audience murmurs for a moment)

    Ash: Do you picture something like this? (an organ hit plays as a picture of a typical scary looking witch unfurls. Pikachu runs behind a chair, afraid of the picture) Well, tonight we're gonna blow that stereotype out of the water (the picture rolls up) by introducing you to three of the cutest--and--prettiest--witches you'll ever meet.

    (Pikachu peeks out from behind the chair, right as he spots Misty punching in some numbers into the Transporter. From his position behind the chair, we can't hear the Transporter speaking, but we do see a bright flash of light from the Transporter's location. Pikachu climbs on the chair, where he sees three girls talking to Ash.)

    Pikachu: Pika?

    Misty: Those three are the stars of your favorite show, Magical Doremi, Pikachu...Dorie; (points out a girl with large magenta odangoes) Renee; (points out a brown haired girl with glasses and Mirabelle. (points out the blue haired girl talking to Ash)

    Pikachu: Pika! (he grabs and autograph book and a pencil) Chupichu! (he frantically waves to get Mirabelle's attention)

    Ash: I think Pikachu wants your autographs, girls...but first, why don't you show the audience how you three become your witchling selves?

    Dorie: Sure thing! (she hits the button in the middle of a white compact surrounded by rainbow musical notes and claps twice, making magenta gloves appear on her hands. Tapping the device to her feet makes a pair of magenta elf-like boots appear. Clapping over her head makes a pink dress-like outfit appear, which Dorie comfortably slips into, and tapping the device on her head makes a pink hat appear, completing the look.) Pretty witchi Dorie-chi! (the audience laughs and applauds at Dorie's cute pose)

    Misty: That's cute...

    (Before Renee and Mirabelle can transform themselves, Brock suddenly appears on the stage next to Ash, clapping and stomping as he sings in really fast gibberish to the tune of "She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain"...for about three seconds before the cane yanks him offstage)

    Mirabelle: What was that all about?

    Ash: Don't ask...

    Mirabelle: Okay then, I'm not gonna ask. (Misty watches with Dorie from the wings as Renee and Mirabelle transform)

    Misty(to Dorie): Conjure up a cane next time Brock tries to interrupt the show. (Dorie nods and claps twice, summoning a magic wand)

    (The audience applauds as Renee and Mirabelle, now in witchling attire like Dorie's, pose for the audience. Renee's outfit is orange, and Mirabelle's is blue)

    Ash: Aren't they-- (Ash is interrupted by Brock singing in gibberish again. He sighs as Brock cavorts across the stage)

    Misty(whispering): Now, Dorie... (Dorie nods and aims her wand at Brock.)

    Dorie: Pirika pirilala poporina peperuto...magical cane!

    (as if on cue, a cane appears and yanks Brock offstage)

    Ash: Thanks Dorie...whatever all that "pirika pirilala" stuff was...(mild laughter as Ash trudges to the projector) We've prepared this footage of our meeting with one of our local witchlings... (starts the projector)

    [CARTOON-"Hocus Pokemon", part 1]

    (We see a pair of live Ash hands holding a wand identical to Dorie's, Ash says "Pikachu pirouette..." but Dorie interrupts by saying "You're watching 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'...and that's 'Pirika pirilala', Ash..." Ash sighs as we look closer at his wand...one of the engravings is a Pikachu face!)

    (We see Ash with his wand again...but when he says "Pikachu...", he really does conjure a Pikachu! He snuggles with the Pikachu as Renee says "And now, back to the show!")

    (We rejoin Ash, Kari, and witchlings back in the theater. Dorie quickly recognizes the image of Lily on the screen)

    Dorie: Oh, I know who that is!

    Mirabelle: Yeah, Lily's well known in these parts...we learned about her, too! (the screen flashes white as Mirabelle is talking, right before we see what Lilly turned Ash into. Dorie is not pleased by the film running out)

    Dorie: No fair! I wanted to see what Ash turned into!

    Kari: Well, why don't we ask them? (gestures to the audience)

    (On Our Way interlude plays as a group of voices say "What Happens Next?" in sync with the words appearing. Kari's face appears in the dot on the question mark)

    (We join Kari before the projector at a video screen)

    Kari: Now, if you were watching the cartoon earlier, you know that this was the last scene shown before the film ran out...

    (We see Lilly casting the spell, but we don't see what Ash turned into)

    Kari: Now, I suppose you're wondering...

    Random voices: What Happens Next? (the title card reappears, minus Kari's face in the question mark)

    Kari: To find out, I asked 50 people on the street what they think happens next based on that scene alone...and here's some of what they said: (cues the video, which makes a random girl appear on the screen)

    Random girl: I think he turned into a Squirtle...

    Random man: Judging from his firey presonality, he probably turned into a Charmander!

    Random boy: Nah, a Bulbasaur's more like it!

    Random woman: He might have become a Meowth! (the footage ends here. Ash turns to the girls)

    Ash: What do you want to guess Lilly turned me into?

    Dorie: I think she turned you into...a Growlithe!

    Mirabelle: Nah, you became a Pikachu!

    (Renee is about to answer when suddenly, a tuba blast comes out of nowhere. A quick glance at stage right reveals Brock is playing the aforementioned tuba. Kari just covers her ears, annoyed by the noise.)

    Renee: I'll escort him off this time...(she brandishes a wand identical to Dorie's) Paipai ponpoi puwapuwa puu...magical cane! (as if on cue, the cane appears and yanks Brock offstage, tuba and all.)

    Mirabelle: Next time Brock interrupts us, can I yank him off with the cane? (laughter)

    Ash: Sure...he's in a weird mood tonight...

    (no sooner does Ash say that, do the lights come up on the dictionary, which is now open to a page of the C's)

    Brock: Carrot and carol, crush and corral, and then cats and then sweet caramel...conjure, then conceited, concur and caveated, cavort and then one carnival!...

    Kari(over Brock's singing): Speaking of carnivals...here's a song for you three...

    (music begins)

    Kari: My heart is racing, don don!
    What am I to do with this power inside me?     (what to do?)
    Surprising, surprising, bin bin!
    Everything would be so wonderful, oh wouldn't it?     (sure it would!)

    Every day, it would dawn just like a Sunday!
    Going to school would feel like you're in a theme park!

    (as if on cue, a cane appears and yanks Brock offstage.)

    Ash: Now that each of you have had a turn yanking Brock offstage...let's find out...

    Random voices: What Happens Next? (Ash just starts the projector)

    Ash: Oh, there you are... (motions Celebi to come down, to some applause)

    (Suddenly, some arguing is heard, piquing Celebi's interest)

    Celebi: Bi?

    Ash: I dunno, let's go see... (is about to start offstage when Misty appears from the wings) What's going on?

    Misty: Brock got bored with singing the dictionary...

    (Misty is interrupted by wild applause)

    Misty: Anyway, Brock got bored with singing the dictionary, and now he's arguing with Kari about who's the better musician...

    Ash: I see... (Celebi motions for Ash to come closer) Hm? (listens as Celebi whispers something in his ear) Good idea!

    Misty: What?

    Ash: Celebi says to have a contest...he calls it...

    (a lightning bolt streaks across the screen)

    Ash(voiceover with an echo-y effect): Musical Duel! (the words fade in over the lightning as dramatic music plays)

    (we hear a record scrape as we quickly return to the theater)

    Misty: Nice echo....

    Ash: Thanks...as I was saying, it's time for a...

    (another lightning bolt streaks across the screen)

    Ash(echo-y voiceover): Musical Duel! (the words appear over the lightning when Ash says them, complete with dramatic music in the background)

    (we return to the theater, where we see that the lights have dimmed. Brock is on the left side of the stage, while Kari is on the right. May stands in the center, holding a sparkly flag in each hand)

    Ash(voiceover): The rules of the duel are simple: the two competitors will be given an instrument, which they have to play...but the key to winning is more than just getting a note...we want the competitors to actually perform a bit of a song...and whoever can do so, wins! Representing the Ruby side...Brock Harrison... (a red spotlight appears on Brock, with an image of Groudon superimposed behind him) And representing the Sapphire side....Kari Shinjuno... (a blue spotlight appears on Kari, with an image of Kyorge superimposed behind her) These two will duel...but what instrument will they duel with?

    (we see a scene of a Pokeflute)

    Ash(voiceover): How bout a Pokeflute? (a spotlight appears on the aforementioned Pokeflute)

    (we return to the theater to see Brock and Kari toying with Pokeflutes)

    Ash(voiceover): Both sides have the instrument now...let's first see how Ruby fares first.

    (We see a countdown blip "3...2...1..." as Brock readies his Pokeflute and blows into it, getting a low D, which spurs him to play a few bars of Gary's theme)

    Ash(voiceover): Now let's see how Sapphire does...

    (Kari readies her instrument as the coundown blips "3...2...1..."...but when she blows into it, all she gets is a high pitched squawk! She giggles nervously)

    Ash(voiceover): This match's winner is...(a drumroll is heard before May raises the sparkly red flag) RUBY!!! (Brock takes a bow for the audience as the stage brightens again)

    Kari: You win for now, but we'll rematch next show! (heads offstage)

    Brock: You're on! (heads offstage)

    Ash(to Celebi): I think your contest worked well... (Celebi giggles, flies to the projector, and starts it)

    (CARTOON-"Voice of the Forest!" montage)

    (We see a pair of animated Ash hands sketching a forest. When he looks up from his sketch, we see Celebi looking at him from a rock, curious about his drawing. The female announcer says "You're watching 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'! as Celebi flies off, leaving behind a trail of flower petals that form a Pikachu face)

    (We see scenes of a forest as Celebi flies through it, including making some ripples on a pond as the announcer says "And now, back to 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'!" One of the ripples is Pikachu's face)

    (We rejoin Ash and Celebi in the theater...Ash has another reel in his hands)

    Ash: How bout it, Celebi? Want to watch this video with Hinata? (Celebi nods enthusiastically)

    (Before Ash can head for the projector, he hears a TWANG! from offstage, which scares Celebi)

    Brock(offstage): Oh wonderful...

    Ash: What?

    Brock: One of my guitar strings broke, so now I can't sing the song I was gonna sing!

    Kari: It's okay..you'll think of something....

    May: Try playing guitar with your tongue!

    Brock: Cartoon rabbits can do it, but I can't...(he thinks on that for a moment) SAY....

    Kari: What?

    Brock: I may not be able to play this on my tongue...but I CAN play guitar...with my voice!

    Misty: THIS I have to see...

    Brock(imitating a guitar): Dan dah dao...

    (Kari plays back what Brock sang on her guitar)

    Brock(still doing his vocal guitar): La la lao...

    (Kari plays back the notes Brock sang)

    Ash(over Brock's vocal guitar): I think I know where this is going...

    (Celebi leads the clapping as Brock and Kari do a rousing rendition of the Tiny Toon Adventures theme song. The audience roars with applause when they're done)

    Brock: Thank you! (takes a bow)

    Ash: Very nice... (notices that Celebi is looking annoyed) I know, I didn't forget! (heads over the projector, threads a reel inside, and starts it)

    (CARTOON-"Go, Go, Pokemon Ranger!", part 1)

    (Back in the theater, Celebi listens as Brock finishes fixing the broken string)

    Brock: There we go...I got the broken string fixed just in time for my part of the show!

    Brock: You must always remember...

    [whistle solo, then the music picks up]

    Brock: Life can be a challenge,

    ANP #081: On the Wings of a Battle


    (Cue OP-Pikachu's Tap Dance-We see Pikachu dancing out on a stage to a catchy tune before we see a montage of clips from the show. We then see Brock and Kari tangoing, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle posing in time to the music, Brock playing guitar and breaking a string, and Ash juggling Poke Balls and catching them in his hat in time to the music. Next, we see Brock going goo goo for Nurse Joy, Pikachu winking, and the Transporter going haywire, followed by Ash and Misty panicing over the previous scene. Then we see Brock running to hug Officer Jenny, only to crash into something backstage, Misty and May posing, Ash peeking onstage and panicing over something, Kari looking up from a comic, Brock getting yanked offstage by the cane in time to the music, the band playing, followed by Brock getting hit with pies in time to the music. Next we see Ash running onstage to greet the crowd, followed by Kari and the band performing.

    The montage culminates in returning to the earlier scene of Pikachu dancing, only now Ash and Winona are with him. One by one, Misty, May, Brock, and Kari join the dance as the words in the title fly into place. The completed title card slowly zooms at the audience before settling in a spot over Ash and Pikachu as everyone poses for the audience to end the song.)

    (Suddenly, a spotlight appears on Brock)

    Brock: How can a battle have wings? (smiles over one last hit of music as the scene fades out)

    (On Our Way plays in the background as Ash runs onstage and waves to the crowd)

    Ash: Thank you! (On Our Way fades out at this point) Tonight we wanna pay tribute to someone very well known to the denizens of Fortree City... (various cheers come from the audience) Aside from being a skilled battler, she'll even take out on a flight herself if you ask. (more cheers) With that being said, please welcome the lovely Winona to the stage.

    (Applause as Winona appears and gets comfortable in a chair facing Ash)

    Winona: Thank you all, and thank you, Ash...it's good to be here this evening.

    Ash: My pleasure--

    (Before Ash can say any more, Brock zips onstage and begins singing very fast gibberish to the tune of "She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain", only to be yanked offstage by the cane a few seconds later)

    Winona: Don't tell me...

    Ash: I know how Brock went gaga for you the first time...the best way to keep him quiet before his act is to yank him off with the cane or hit him with a pie. (laughter) Both of which are magically drawn by our resident artist, Misty. (applause as Misty comes onstage and joins Ash and Winona in the circle of chairs.)

    Misty: So this is the famous Winona...

    Winona: I've heard plenty about you too, Misty...maybe we can chat while we watch this? (holds a reel in the air)

    Ash: Why don't we? (he takes the reel from Winona, threads it into the projector, and starts it, making the lights go down.)

    [CARTOON-"Who's Flying Now?"]

    (We see a pair of live Ash hands holding a camera, about to take a picture of a Swellow. Before Ash can take the picture of the Swellow, it flys away! The female announcer says "'The Ash and Pikachu Show' will be right back after these messages." as a trail of Swellow feathers drift down to the ground, creating Pikachu's face.)

    (We see the live Ash hands again, this time trying to control the Swellow from earlier, The female announcer says "And now, back to 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'" as Ash loops about in the sky. When we zoom out a few seconds later, we see that all the looping has created a Pikachu face in the sky)

    (We rejoin Winona and Misty backstage at the drawing board)

    Winona: So whatever you draw with these magical pencils comes alive?

    Misty: Mm-hmm...

    Winona: And Ash says the best way to calm down Brock is hit him with a pie?

    Misty: It works every time when we're desprate...

    Winona: So why don't you show me what some of the craziest ways you've dreamed up to hit him with a pie...on paper?

    Misty: Sure...it won't be quite so messy on paper... (goes to work)

    (On Our Way interlude as the title card appears-"'Back to the Drawing Board' with Misty" Misty's face appears in the o in "Board")

    (A blank screen appears, simulating a piece of paper)

    (Brock is drawn on the screen and colored)

    Winona(voiceover): Okay, Misty...work your art!

    Misty(voiceover): Well, every time I've hit Brock with a pie, it's usually one single pie...

    (a pie comes out of nowhere and hits Brock with a SPLUT!)

    (Brock cleans the pie off of him, so he looks clean again)

    Misty(voiceover): But what I'd really like to do is hit him with more than one pie...

    (Brock jumps, ducks, and sidesteps several pies)

    Brock: Missed me! (blows a raspberry in the direction the pies came from--only to dodge more pies)

    Winona(voiceover): Oh no, you don't!

    (a hand appears and plops Brock in a chair overlooking a crowd)

    Brock: Hey, this is nice... (relaxes in the chair as it lifts him up so he can see the crowd better...untill he notices three pies in front of him)

    Misty(voiceover): Any last words?

    Brock: ::gulp:: Uh oh...

    (the crowd roars as three SPLUTs are heard. When we see Brock again, he's smothered in whipped cream)

    Winona(voiceover): And for extra humiliation...

    (A Swellow squawk is heard overhead, and a green splotch lands on Brock from above)

    (the page is torn off, and Brock is redrawn again, clean)

    Brock: Why didn't you TELL me you were gonna SPLUT me...(he struggles to think of the word) thrice?

    Misty(voiceover): I just wanted to have some fun!

    Brock: Can we think of some fun that isn't messy?

    (the pencil draws in a playground background)

    Brock: This shouldn't be so bad...

    (We see Brock climbing on the jungle gym, swinging on the swings, and going down the slide...until he notices a huge pie at the bottom of the slide...)

    (We hear a huge SPLUT! when Brock finally lands...he climbs out of the pie covered in whipped cream again)

    Brock: Note to self: No more "What Would You Do?" reruns before bedtime... (the trail Brock has left spells "The End")

    (Winona giggles as Misty draws the last scene)

    Misty: Here... (signs her name on the last panel and tears off the paper) You can keep it as a souvenir.

    Winona: Thank you, Misty... (takes the paper and follows Misty onstage, where Brock and the band are tuning up)

    Ash: Now, it's time for a real treat! (the crowd cheers) A world premiere song from Brock and the band...

    (music begins)

    Brock: Like the mountain I must conquer, like the battle I must endure,
    I will fight for your honor, steadfast and sure!
    Some kind of vision fit for a king, and I got a feeling I can do anything...

    ANP #082: Catching the Wave!



    (Cue OP-Pikachu's Tap Dance-We see Pikachu dancing out on a stage to a catchy tune before we see a montage of clips from the show. We then see Brock and Kari tangoing, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle posing in time to the music, Brock playing guitar and breaking a string, and Ash juggling Poke Balls and catching them in his hat in time to the music. Next, we see Brock going goo goo for Nurse Joy, Pikachu winking, and the Transporter going haywire, followed by Ash and Misty panicing over the previous scene. Then we see Brock running to hug Officer Jenny, only to crash into something backstage, Misty and May posing, Ash peeking onstage and panicing over something, Kari looking up from a comic, Brock getting yanked offstage by the cane in time to the music, the band playing, followed by Brock getting hit with pies in time to the music. Next we see Ash running onstage to greet the crowd, followed by Kari and the band performing.

    The montage culminates in returning to the earlier scene of Pikachu dancing, only now Ash, Brawly, and Shawna are with him. One by one, Misty, May, Brock, and Kari join the dance as the words in the title fly into place. The completed title card slowly zooms at the audience before settling in a spot over Ash and Pikachu as everyone poses for the audience to end the song.)

    (Suddenly, a spotlight appears on Brock)

    Brock: Like, hang twenty five, dude! (smiles over one last hit of music as the scene fades)

    (On Our Way interlude plays briefly as Ash runs onstage and waves to the crowd)

    Ash: Thank you! (On Our Way fades out) Tonight we want to feature two of the most famous faces of Dewford Town... (various cheers are heard in the audience) so join me in welcoming Brawly and Shawna to the stage. (leads the applause as Brawly and Shawna charge onstage)

    Shawna: Hello out there! (waves)

    Brawly: I am so stoked to be sharing the stage with the Ash-man! (he offers his hand to Ash) Put'er there, man! (Ash and Brawly shake hands)

    Ash: The pleasure's all mine, both of you... (at this second, May arrives onstage, Misty and Kari in tow)

    May: Brawly, Shawna, what a surprise! It's been so long! (an "Awww..." is heard as May and Shawna hug)

    Brawly: And who might these two be? (gestures to Misty and Kari)

    Ash: This is Misty, our resident artist... (Misty waves) Anything her pencil draws come to life!

    Shawna: Magical pencils?

    Brawly: Puh-leese...

    (Before Brawly can say any more, Brock zips onstage and begins singing the tune of "She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain" in very fast, unintelligle gibberish)

    Misty: Watch and learn! (she draws the cane, which yanks Brock offstage)

    Brawly: Oh I see...if the Brock-man misbehaves or comes on before his cue, you yank him off, right?

    Ash: Something like that... (light laughter) And this is Kari...our other singer...she likes to challenge Brock in something we call...

    (a flash of lightning streaks across the screen as dramatic music plays)

    Ash(echo-y voiceover): Musical Duel! (the words flash on the screen as Ash says them)

    (When we return to the theater, the lights have dimmed onstage. Brock is on the left side of the stage, and Kari on the right. May is at center stage with a sparkly flag in each hand)

    Ash(voiceover): Here's how this works, guys...in a moment, our two competitors will get an instrument at random. The objective here is not just to get a note, but actually play a little bit of a song.

    Brawly: Sounds good...

    Ash(voiceover): That being said, who will win today? Ruby? (a red spotlight appears on Brock with an image of Groudon superimposed behind him) or Sapphire? (Kari appears in a blue spotlight with an image of Kyorge superimposed behind her) But first we must determine what instrument will be played this time...

    (an image of a harmonica appears)

    Ash(voiceover): Shall we wail the blues? (a spotlight appears on the harmonica)

    (When we return to the theater, we see that Brock and Kari each have harmonicas)

    Ash(voiceover): First, we'll see how Ruby fares....

    (a red countdown blips "3...2...1...", then Brock proceeds to play a short blues riff)

    Ash(voiceover): Now, Sapphire...

    (a blue countdown blips "3...2...1...", and Kari tries to blow, but only ends up making an airy noise)

    Ash(voiceover): And this match's winner is... (a drumroll is heard before May raises the sparkly red flag) RUBY!!! (applause as Brock bows for the audience)

    Shawna: Neato!

    Kari: Can you give me lessons?

    Brock: Sure... (he follows Kari offstage. Ash, meanwhile, starts over to the projector)

    Ash: While they do that, let's watch this! (threads a reel in the projector and starts it)

    [CARTOON-"A Meditite Fight!", part 1]

    (We see a pair of claymation Ash hands gripping a towline as a boat carries him through the water. The female announcer says "You're watching 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'!" as the boat speeds off, making several Pikachu faces in the water.)

    (When we return to Ash, we see he's riding on a surfboard--and he crashes into a rock as the tide comes in. Brawly says "Welcome back to the show, dudes!" as claymation Pikachus with wings spin around Ash's head)

    (Shawna winces at the eyecatch as we return to the theater)

    Shawna: That had to hurt...

    Misty: You know...that reminded me of the very first living comic I ever drew...

    Brawly: Really? Could you mind showing it to us?

    Misty: My pleasure! (gets some paper and goes to work....)

    (On Our Way interlude plays as title card appears-'Back to the Drawing Board' with Misty". Misty's face appears in the o in "Board")

    (A white screen appears, presumably to simulate a blank piece of paper.)

    Misty(voiceover): Ah, a fresh piece of blank paper...let's see what sort of mayhem we can make here....but before that, we need a character to undergo our adventures!

    (A pencil appears on the screen and begins drawing and coloring Brock)

    Brock: Hi! (looks around the blank screen) I could use some scenery here...

    (The pencil draws a line behind Brock, making a very simple scene)

    Brock: Not much of a scene...

    Misty(voiceover): Then be specific!

    Brock: Okay...how about...the beach? (the pencil draws in a crowded beach) and I'm surfing to impress the ladies! (the pencil draws a surfboard and water under Brock, before it starts to erase him!) Hey, what the...?

    Misty(voiceover): I'm just dressing you accordingly...(the pencil draws swim trunks onto Brock) There. Happy surfing! (the scene begins moving--Brock weaves and swirls on the waves, to the point of making silly poses on the board) But, watch where you're going, Surfer King! (Brock crashes into a palm tree, making "The End" appear on the screen)

    (Brawly watches as Misty draws the last scene)

    Brawly: So that right there...was comic numero uno, right?

    Misty: Yeah...and as thanks for coming... (signs her name on the last panel and tears it off the pad) I want you guys to have it as a souvenir.

    Shawna: Aw, thank you! (hugs Misty)

    Ash: And now, it's time for a song from Brock and the band...

    (music begins)

    Flannery: Thank you so much! (to Ash) I am stoked to be here tonight!

    Ash: The pleasure's all ours... (he invites Flannery to sit down, just as May comes onstage, with Beautifly sitting atop her head)

    May: Hi, Flannery!

    Beautifly: Beauti!

    Flannery: Hello, May and Beautifly...

    Brock: And HELLO, my fiery one! (laughter)

    Flannery: Well, the gang's all here, so let's bust out the ol' projector and reminesce, shall we? (Pikachu hops off Ash's shoulder, threads a reel in the projector, and starts it)

    [CARTOON-"Poetry Commotion!"]

    (We see a pair of CGI Ash hands trekking through a volcanic cave. The female announcer says "You're watching 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'!" as Ash finds a hot spring in the cave. One wisp of steam turns into Pikachu's face as Ash gets comfortable in the water)

    (We next see Ash and Flannery battling, Squirtle vs. Torkoal. The announcer says "And now, back to the show!" as Squirtle jumps from a Flamethrower attack. One of the lava flows by Sqirtle is a Pikachu face)

    (When we return to the cast, Flannery is passing out Lava Cookies to everyone.)

    Flannery: More Lava Cookies, anybody?

    May: I do! (Flannery gives May a cookie. Just then, Misty comes onstage, interested in the smell)

    Misty: Interesting cookies... (takes one)

    Flannery: They're Lava Cookies, my hometown specialty! (Misty smiles as she eaats her cookie)

    Brock: So, what shall we watch next?

    Flannery: One of the hottest cartoons on TV right now... (brandishes a reel that reads "Kochou and the Beautiflies" on it)

    Misty: That reminds me... (she reaches for her sketchbook and invites Flannery to watch)

    (On Our Way interlude plays as the title card appears: "'Back to the Drawing Board' with Misty" Misty's face appears in the o in "Board")

    (A blank screen appears, simulating a blank piece of paper)

    (Ash is drawn on the screen in his normal clothes)

    Misty(voiceover): Okay, what should we make Ash do?

    Bianca(voiceover): Oh...draw him in a sparkly shirt and checkered jacket! (the pencil obliges and draws a fake white rose in the right pocket) And sparkly pants! (the pencil obliges) And long silvery hair! (Ash's hair grows and turns the aforemention color)

    Misty(voiceover): You know, he looks just like a rock star! I'll draw a director... (draws a brown haired girl) and her assistant (draws Max) and see what happens... (draws a stage...)

    Rubina: This is what you have to sing before the Rock n' Roll Forever CD is described, okay? The chords are there too.

    Ash: Got it!

    (We blip to the scene of a stage, where Ash, as Kochou, stands at the center before a mic, a red electric guitar in hand. The crew hurries to position)

    Rubina: We're on in 3, 2, 1!

    (We blip to Max holding a clapboard)

    Max: Rock n' Roll Forever, take 1! (claps the clapboard)

    Rubina(voiceover): And, action!

    (a rock beat begins. Ash begins strumming in time to the beat, but his notes are sounding a little off)

    Ash(singing as Kochou): Have you heard the latest word?
    They're playin' it every place!
    Rockin and a reelin,
    Reelin and rockin,
    Shakin up the human race!
    Rubina: Cut! Your guitar's out of tune!

    Ash: It is? (checks a few notes. Sure enough, they're horrendously out of tune.) Yeesh, it DOES need to be tuned. (starts tuning his instrument)

    (We blip to Max holding a clapboard)

    Max: Rock n' Roll Forever, take 2! (claps the clapboard)

    Rubina(voiceover): And, action!

    (a rock beat begins. Ash begins strumming in time to the beat.)

    Ash(singing as Kochou): Have you heard the latest word?
    They're playin' it---     (strums a few uncertain notes) Line?

    (We blip to Max holding a clapboard)

    Max: Rock n' Roll Forever, take 3! (claps the clapboard)

    Rubina(voiceover): And, action!

    (Before Ash can sing more, a blast of feedback is heard)

    Rubina: Cut! Adjust the microphone!

    (We blip to Max holding a clapboard)

    Rubina(voiceover): And, action!

    (a rock beat begins. Ash is clearly moving his mouth like he's singing, but we don't hear anything)

    Rubina: Cut! The mike needs to be turned on!

    (We blip to Max holding a clapboard)

    Max: Rock n' Roll Forever, take 9! (claps the clapboard)

    Rubina(voiceover): And, action!

    (a rock beat begins. Ash begins strumming in time to the beat.)

    Ash(singing as Kochou): Have you heard the latest word?
    They're playin' it every place!

    Offscreen voice: Jigglypuff, jiggly...

    Ash(getting sleepy): Rockin and rollin'... (yawn)

    Rubina: Someone get the Jigglypuff (yawn) out of here...

    (We blip to Max holding a clapboard)

    Max: Rock n' Roll Forever, take 13! (claps the clapboard)

    Rubina(voiceover): And, action!

    (a rock beat begins. Ash gives his guitar a mighty strum, making a POW! be heard nearby. The crew rushes to extinguish the burning speaker.)

    Ash: Oops...

    Rubina: It wasn't you, someone turned it up too loud....

    (We blip to Max holding a clapboard)

    Max: Rock n' Roll Forever, take 25! (claps the clapboard)

    Rubina(voiceover): And, action!

    (a rock beat begins. Ash begins strumming in time to the beat.)

    (a rock beat begins. Ash begins strumming in time to the beat.)

    Ash(singing as Kochou): Have you heard the latest word?

    (We hear a TWANG!)

    Ash: Great, I broke a string!

    (We blip to Max holding a clapboard)

    Max: Rock n' Roll Forever, take 59! (claps the clapboard)

    Rubina(voiceover): And, action!

    (a glitchy rock beat begins.)

    Ash: Wha?

    Rubina: Cut! Fix the backup tape!

    (We blip to Max holding a clapboard)

    Rubina(voiceover): And, action!

    (a rock beat begins. Ash begins strumming in time to the beat.)

    Rubina: Okay, who's playing DDR when we're supposed to be filming?

    Rubina(voiceover): And, action!

    (a rock beat begins. Ash begins strumming in time to the beat.)

    Ash(singing as Kochou): Have you heard the latest word?
    They're playin' it every--!     (trips on a mic wire) YIPE! (falls to the floor with a crash)

    Rubina: We'll never get filming done at this rate.... (Rubina's notepad reads "The End")

    (Flannery laughs as Misty draws the last scene)

    Flannery: That was great! If Ash can play the part of Kochou...

    (the audience goes wild at this)

    Flannery: If Ash can play the part of Kochou, I have a little something he can use for the costume... (she walks up to Ash and deposits a silver treble clef pendant in his hand) For you.

    Ash: Wow, thanks! (puts it on)

    Brock: Try and transform!

    Ash: Oh come on, that only works in the cartoon!

    Brock: Try it! Try it!

    (the audience chants "Try it!" along with Brock, to the point where they're clapping and stomping)

    Ash: Okay... (wild cheers and applause) Here goes nothing...(he holds his hand in the air, then sings in a noticeably older sounding voice): Ai-yai-yai, I'm your little Beautifly! (Ash's hand begins to glow) Green, black, and blue; make the colors in the sky!

    (MUSIC-"Beautifly" (instrumental))

    (We see a glowing outline of Ash's body against the background of Beautifly wings. As Ash hangs in this position, his torso begins to glow purple, and a silver and purple shirt appears on him. Next, a checkered jacket appears over that in a flash of purple. Next, we look at Ash's legs as sparkling black pants appear on his legs in a flash of blue, and silver shoes appear on his feet. The view next shifts to Ash's head, where we see his eyes finally open. His normally black hair begins to lengthen and turn silver. A white rose appears in the right pocket of the jacket, which the young man holds in one hand as he poses for the audience.)

    (Music cut)

    (The crowd roars as the light fades, revealing Ash as Kochou)

    Misty: It worked!

    May: Now all we need is Niji and we can re-enact the cartoon...

    (At this, a puppet of Niji appears next to Ash. From the audience, we can see Brock's hand manipulating the puppet, but Ash doesn't see this)

    Brock(in a bad impression of Niji's voice): Your public awaits, Kochou!

    Ash(aside): I know that's Brock doing his bad Niji voice, but I'll play along. (as Kochou) You got it, Niji! (motions to the band)

    (music begins)

    Ash(singing as Kochou): Have you heard the latest word?
    They're playin' it every place!

    May: You missed it, Kari! Ash did his impersonation of Kochou of "Kochou and the Beautiflies" fame, right down to the transformation.... (continues rambling in the background as Ash addresses the audience.)

    Ash(over May's yammering): Well, I had a great time, but we'll see you next time! (Pikachu waves as the curtain closes, then hops off Ash's shoulder and proceeds to dance to "Pikachu's Tap Dance" as the credits run. When the curtain reopens, we see May still talking to Kari...)

    May: ...and they go all over the world playing shows and trying to defeat the Rockets... (continues)

    Kari(over May's rambling): Somebody make her stop...

    (at this second, the cane appears and yanks May offstage)

    Misty: Happy now? (sticks her pencil behind her ear as the scene fades out)

    I have to admit that the beginning of this chapter was a bit unconnected but I loved the ending. Espectally with Kari and when May got pulled off the stage. For once it wasn't Brock. Teeheeheehee.
     
    ANP #084: Chu Times Chu



    (Cue OP-Pikachu's Tap Dance-We see Pikachu dancing out on a stage to a catchy tune before we see a montage of clips from the show. We then see Brock and Kari tangoing, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle posing in time to the music, Brock playing guitar and breaking a string, and Ash juggling Poke Balls and catching them in his hat in time to the music. Next, we see Brock going goo goo for Nurse Joy, Pikachu winking, and the Transporter going haywire, followed by Ash and Misty panicing over the previous scene. Then we see Brock running to hug Officer Jenny, only to crash into something backstage, Misty and May posing, Ash peeking onstage and panicing over something, Kari looking up from a comic, Brock getting yanked offstage by the cane in time to the music, the band playing, followed by Brock getting hit with pies in time to the music. Next we see Ash running onstage to greet the crowd, followed by Kari and the band performing.

    The montage culminates in returning to the earlier scene of Pikachu dancing, only now Ash and a second Pikachu, this one Shiny; are with him. One by one, Misty, May, Brock, and Kari join the dance as the words in the title fly into place. The completed title card slowly zooms at the audience before settling in a spot over Ash and Pikachu as everyone poses for the audience to end the song.)

    (Suddenly, a spotlight appears on Brock)
    Brock: Am I seeing double? (smiles over one last hit of music before the scene fades out)

    (On Our Way interlude plays as Ash runs onstage and waves to the crowd)

    Ash: Thank you! Tonight's show--

    (Suddenly, the lights go out for a few seconds. Ash (we only sees his eyes) starts off stage right to go look for a flashlight, but the lights blink back on again before he can enter the wings)

    Ash: So much for the flashlight... (laughter as he returns to his place at center stage) Anyway, tonight--

    (Ash is cut off by the whir of the projector)

    Ash: Huh? (he runs over to the projector and switches it off before it can complete its coundown of "3...2...1...") There... (Misty comes onstage, confused at the commotion)

    Misty: What's wrong?

    Ash: The projector started at the wrong time...

    (On Our Way interlude as the title card appears: "'Back to the Drawing Board' with Misty" Misty's face appears in the o in "Board")

    (Ash pushes the title card away)

    Ash: And your segement got cued when you weren't ready...

    Misty: I didn't even have my supplies ready!

    (A thunderclap and dramatic music is heard, startling Misty)

    Ash: And I didn't even ask for a Musical Duel... (the dramatic music fades out)

    Misty: Okay, so why is everything in the theater going haywire?

    Ash: Well... (he is suddenly cut off as "Pikachu's Tap Dance" starts again and the credits start rolling over his face)

    Brock: HOLD EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!

    (a record scrape is heard and the credits stop as Brock comes onstage)

    Ash: Why did the credits start rolling when the show hasn't started yet?

    (We see a pair of live Ash hands inside a control room, cuing various shows for broadcast at the TV station. The female announcer says "You're watching 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'! as Ash cues a cartoon to be shown. One of the various controls is a button shaped like a Pikachu face)

    (Brock shoves the eyecatch away)

    Brock: More importantly, why did an eyecatch show just now? It's not even time for commercial!

    (Ash is about to answer when a blast of feedback reverbrates in the theater)

    Misty: I think SOMEONE's messing with the controls...

    (No sooner does Misty say that, does the theme for Vermillion City come blaring in the theater)

    Brock(over the music): Come on! To the control room!

    Ash: To the control room!

    Misty(with less enthusiasm then the boys): To the control room... (she sighs and follows the boys out, starting the projector and stopping the music on the way out)

    (CARTOON-"Pikachu Re-Volts!", part 1)

    (We see a pair of live Ash hands overlooking a movie set. the female announcer says "You're watching 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'!" as Ash checks over the actors' positions. A clapboard appears, with the take number spot showing Pikachu's face)

    (When we return to Ash on the movie set, various things are going wrong: the camera shoots film out of it, the actors trip and fall, and when the female announcer says "And now, back to our show!" the set falls down, creating a Pikachu face in the dust cloud)

    (Meanwhile, in the control room, a Shiny Pikachu sits amonts all the rows of buttons and switches, and is obviously enthralled with playing with them all...but when he hears footsteps approaching, he quickly darts away as Ash, Misty, and Brock enter)

    Brock: Okay, who's messing with the controls?

    (Nincadas chirp)

    Misty: You sure nobody was messing with the controls?

    Brock: Must've been my imagination, I guess. (he leads the others back to the stage, where we see Kari and May waiting)

    May: What where you guys doing in the control room?

    Ash: The whole show's been going haywire, so we were checking to see if someone was messing with the controls.

    May: I see...

    (Meanwhile, the Shiny Pikachu spots Kari snoozing on a cot by the prop room...and gets an idea. He hurries into the prop room and returns with an armload of bike horns. Then, he returns with tape, and begins taping bike horns to Kari. Treecko spots the Pikachu doing this, and begins taping several bike horns by her feet. Torchic helps by taping three by her head, and Mudkip adds a few more in between her legs and on her back.

    The four Pokemon sneak to a box and watch as Kari wakes up and walks onstage--much to the audience's delight. Even the rest of the cast is laughing)

    Kari: What's so--(she looks down at her clothes) Okay, who stuck all these bike horns on me? (starts to unstick them as the audience laughs) I'm not agile enough to play classical music on them... (Pikachu giggles as he starts the projector.)

    (CARTOON-"Pikachu Re-Volts!", part 2)

    (We join Ash back in the theater. Kari is nearby, unsticking the last few bike horns)

    Ash: And now--

    (a whistle is heard backstage)

    Ash: Anyway, now--

    (a rimshot is heard)

    Ash: I didn't even tell a joke! (he check the soundboard at the foot of the stage and spots the Shiny Pikachu) Ah ha! (he catches the Pikachu as it tries to flee) Now...why are you trying to mess up the show?

    Shiny Pikachu: Oh geez, how do I answer this? Well truthfully, whoever wrote the script for this episode of the show had me annoy you by messing up the show in some way, like, causing the projector to start early and cuing whatever that segment is where you draw comics early and believe me, you draw great comics, Misty.

    Misty: Why thank you...um...

    Brock: Okay if we call you Mikaru? (the Shiny Pikachu nods)

    Ash: You want to be a star, Mikaru? (Mikaru nods.) I can let you be a cast member here...

    Mikaru: Oh, yeah! (he dances around Ash singing Friends for life, friends for life! Through all kinds of trouble and struggle and strife!)

    Ash: However, you need to behave yourself...think you can do that?

    Mikaru: Okay...

    Brock: You know...Mikaru just gave me an idea for a song...

    (a boogie piano intro begins. As the rest of the band starts playing, we see Mikaru playing the grand piano. Ash and Brock appear holding microphones as lights begin flashing in time to the music.)

    Ash: I got class, pananche, I'm in the groove ...

    Brock: As long as you don't try to move!
    I got style, grace and a crazy beat...

    Ash: You sure are light on those two left feet, and we're,

    Ash and Brock: Friends for life, friends for life!
    Through all kinds of trouble and struggle and strife!

    Ash: I've got a problem I can't explain...

    Brock: I'll be there with the plane!
    I got moves, man...

    Ash: You learned from me! I got a song to sing...

    Brock: If you can find the key!

    Ash and Brock: Whatever he's got, I've got more of!
    But there's one thing we both are sure of, we're,

    Friends for life, friends for life!
    Through all kinds of trouble and struggle and strife!

    Brock: I'm stuck on a mountain without a hope...

    Ash: I'll be there with the rope!

    Brock: Like my duds?

    Ash: If I'm in a jam...

    Ash(scatting): Shu-bee-dee-a-doo-a-dee-an-da-ohhhh yeah! (applause) Thank you! (he and Brock bow as Kari starts the projector)

    (We join Ash and Mikaru onstage)

    Mikaru: I liked that song!

    Ash: Then you'll love the dance we do to end the show...see ya next time! (Pikachu waves, them watches as Ash and Mikaru start dancing to "Pikachu's Tap Dance". The credits roll during the routine.)

    (Applause as Ash runs onto the stage, which is covered in red, blue, and yellow streamers and balloons)

    Ash: Thank you! It's been a year since we started doing the show.... (wild applause) so tonight we're gonna celebrate this year by looking back on where we've been. (more applause. Mikaru runs onstage, piqued by the applause)

    Mikaru: Why the party decor? Whose birthday is it?

    Ash: The show's! We've been doing this for a year!

    Mikaru: Wow...really?

    Misty: Yeah! We found this place in disrepair several years ago, so we fixed it up and hosted our first show here beginning last year.

    Brock: And doesn't this place look beautiful? (applause as he wheels out the projector)

    Mikaru: Ever since i saw that first show, I wanted to have a place on it with you guys...

    Ash: I remember that first show like yesterday... (threads a reel in the projector and starts it, making the lights go down. After counting down "3...2...1..." the clapboard for the first show is seen)

    Brock(voiceover): "The Ash and Pikachu Show" episode 1, take 1! (claps the clapboard)

    (Cue OP-On Our Way-as the song plays, we see various shots of the Pokemon cast in the backstage area, getting ready for a show: Misty walks past one member of the lighting crew, making her trip and drop her paints, which color some of the notes on Brock's sheet music. He tries to clean the music, only to get walloped by a basketball in the face (thrown by May) Pikachu runs past all of this, down a hallway, and through a door with a star on it marked "Ash". He cries "Pika!" and points at a clock, which is ticking dangerously close to "Show Time!" Ash notices the time on the clock and ducks behind a screen to get ready, when he finishes, he's now decked out in a red top hat (with the same design as his cap) and tails. Ash then runs head on at the camera and makes a flying entrance onto a stage as the song concludes)

    Female announcer: And now, it's time for the Ash and Pikachu Show!

    (Pikachu climbs onto Ash's shoulder and smiles as the title card flies in from the right, a short clip of "On Our Way" in the background)

    (Applause as Ash (this time in his normal attire) jogs onstage and waves to the imaginary crowd.)

    Ash: Thank you! We have a great show planned for you tonight...we've got thrills---

    (Ash is cut off by a scream backstage)

    Ash: Uh, I didn't mean those kinds of thrills...::ahem:: We've got chills--

    (We see the backstage thermostat-a mysterious hand turns the knob down, making the temperature in the theater drop to the point where Ash is a human ice cube)

    Ash(shivering): I d-didn't m-mean those kinds of ch-chills, either...Who's m-messing with the thermostat?

    (The answer of course, is Pikachu...he playfully turns the knob all the way to the right, making the theater so hot, Ash melts into an amoeba made of sweat. He crawls backstage to see Pikachu turning the temperature knob back and forth, making the theater's environment change accordingly)

    Ash-amoeba: Pikachu? Could you stop messing with the thermostat? You're making it uncomfortable for me and the audience!

    Pikachu: Chu! (he resets the thermostat back to normal, making Ash appear in his original form)

    Ash: Now come on! We have a show to do! (returns to the stage, Pikachu in tow) As I was saying, we even have a few surprises for-- (a trapdoor suddenly opens under Ash) YOOOOUUUU!!!! (A splash is heard)

    Pikachu: Pikapi? (looks down the trapdoor to see Ash in a puddle of water)

    Ash: Just start the first cartoon, would ya?

    Pikachu: Pika! (he bounds up to a projector and starts it, making the lights in the theater go down)

    (Mikaru giggles as the projector continues running)

    Ash: So began our shows...before long, they started selling out! They liked our simple format: I would introduce the acts...

    Misty: I drew the comics...

    Brock: And I sang a song, usually with the band. (gestures to the band, who is tuning up)

    Mikaru: What song did you sing on the first show?

    Brock: I'll show you! (he disappears offstage for a moment, then returns with his guitar. Ash, meanwhile, settles in at the grand piano.) Maestro...(Ash just plays a simple piano chord, while Brock prepares to give his guitar a mighty strum) That's the whole introduction? You're supposed to do it in a light key, too!

    Ash: Okay, okay... (plays a bouncy blues intro, while Brock strums to the beat)

    Brock: I'm...blue as I can be! (Brock's spotlight turns blue, every time he mentions a color his spotlight changes accordingly) Green with jealousy! Look what you've done to me!

    I got those green...with envy blues!
    I mean those red...with anger blues!
    And there's the purple with passion blues,
    Over you!

    Orange...you're gonna squeeze me...neath the mellow, yellow moon...

    So I can lose these green with envy, red with anger, purple passionate blues...

    Oh! Oh-oh-oh-oh!     (gags)

    Misty: Methinks you need to practice that...

    Brock: Purple with passion blues...over you! Oh! Whoa-oh-oh-oh!
    Orange...you're gonna squeeze me...neath the mellow, yellow moon!

    So I can lose these green with envy, red with anger, purple passionate blues!
    And that's the green with envy blues!     (applause) Thank you! (bows and acknowledges Ash, who also bows)

    Mikaru: Bravo! Encore!

    Ash: You'll get your encore after this... (plays a jazz riff based on "On Our Way" as the audience claps along.)

    (We see a pair of animated Ash hands tearing open a birthday present. As he lifts the gift (a set of comic books) from the box, the camera zooms to look at the pile of presents as the female announcer says "You're watching 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'!" We notice that the wrapping paper on one box is Pikachu faces)

    (We return to see a birthday cake before Ash. As he blows out the candles, the female announcer says "And now, back to the show!". The smoke wisps from the candles form Pikachu's face)

    (we rejoin Ash and Mikaru in the theater)

    Ash: The press raved about every show we did, and despite our original plans for just a 25 show run, the fans begged for more! (May enters as Ash continues talking) May contributed something new to the show that second season...acting!

    Mikaru: Acting!! (he holds an apple in one paw and strikes a dramatic pose) To be or not to be, that is the question.... (light laughter)

    Ash: Not that kind of acting...(to May) Get the mini stage... (May nods, and heads offstage) This kind of acting was more in a humorous vein... (May returns with the mini stage)

    May: But the audience loved it nonetheless! (smiles as Ash and Brock step on the mini stage)

    (On Our Way interlude plays as the title card appears: "'Curtain Up' with May'. May's face appears in the rounded part of the a in her name.)

    (We open on the scene of a band room, complete with instruments, music stands, chairs, and a mirrored screen dividing the room in half so that the diffrent sections can practice privately if they need to.)

    (Ash enters the room carrying some books (presumably the music the band is playing for a supposed concert). After setting them aside on a nearby music stand, he pauses to admire himself on his side of the mirror, with light laughter. After checking to see if he looks presentable, Ash takes one of the trombone cases lying in the clutter of cases, opens it, and assembles the instrument inside. Once that's done, he blows a stream of B flats to check the acoustics of the room.

    Meanwhile, Brock has entered the room and gotten settled on his side of the screen, where he too assembles a trombone of his own. Ash, meanwhile, continues to warm up. Brock first decides to flex his arms a few times as Ash continues warming up, then attends to his own instrument. While Ash is taking his last minute practice seriously, Brock is goofing around, using the trombone slide like a sword. Finally, he also settles in and starts his own warm up.

    The two trombones meld together for a few minutes, making it hard to tell who's playing what for a few minutes. Finally, Brock starts a riff from a classical number, which Ash counters with a excerpt of "Flight of the Beedrill". Annoyed at Ash's showing off, Brock proceeds to blare "The Ride of the Valkyries" over Ash's performance, much to the audience's delight. Ash tries to follow along with this, but his version is off key compared to Brock's.

    Ash next tries a riff from Ravel's "Bolero", complete with a few smears. Brock decides to one up Ash by playing the same part up a step, only to get one upped by Ash as he plays what Brock was playing up a step. Before long, both are just noodling around in the high register trying to outdo each other.

    Before Brock can think of something else to counter Ash, Ash sees a glimpse of the sheet music on one of the horn player's stands: the famed horn call from "Siegfried", and pulls off an amazingly good sounding version that sounds just like a horn, much to Brock's surprise. Brock decides to try it himself, and follows along with the next part of the call. The two trade off on this until it dissolves into an off key mess again.)

    Brock: I hope the horn players didn't hear us stealing their stuff... (laughter)

    Ash: Let's see if we can play high enough to make the trumpets jealous!

    Brock: Highest note we can muster on three, okay? (Ash nods) One...two...three!

    (Both of them blow the highest, loudest, most out of tune note they can muster...until both give out, breathing heavily)

    Ash: I think we can brag to the trumpets now...

    Brock: Let's hurry and finish warming up before the rest of the band gets here!

    Ash: Gotcha! (plays a little piece of "Dueling Banjoes")

    (Brock plays the next part of the song, which in turn snowballs into a full blown rendition of "dueling 'bones" The audience applauds when they're done)

    Ash: Rematch after rehearsal? (as Ash says this, various other instruments are heard tuning up in the background)

    Brock: You're on! (laughter and applause as the scene fades out)

    (The girls and Mikaru are still laughing as Ash and Brock bow to the audience)

    Kari: That was hilarious!

    Misty: Ha ha...I agree! (laughs even more)

    Mikaru: I wanna hear that again! (wipes away a tear of laughter)

    Brock: Again? (readies his trombone)

    Ash: Yeah!

    (Misty leads the clapping as the boys battle again, leading to more wild applause when they finish. Just then, May enters with a birthday cake.)

    May: I hate to interuppt the jam session and nostalgia, but the cake is ready!

    Ash: Oh boy!

    (after getting the stage back in order, we see the whole cast gathered around the cake, which now has a single lit candle on it.)

    Misty: Maestro...

    (guitar chord)

    Everyone: Happy birthday to you,
    Happy birthday to you,
    Happy birthday dear show,
    Happy birthday to you!     (applause as Mikaru blows the candle out)

    Ash: I claim the first piece! (Misty hands him his slice) Well, we're about out of time for tonight, and here's to another year of shows! (cheers and applause) See you next time!

    Pikachu: Pika! (waves, then eats his cake. A medley of "On Our Way" and Pikachu's Tap Dance" plays as the credits roll.)
