I sat there, eating my cookies in the back of the class. Two twists and the cookie was broken in half, with one side having more icing than the other. I ate the icing-less side first, tasting the fake chocolaty goodness. I moved on to the other part and licked the icing off completely before starting on the outer crust. Thus far today, I had not summoned my cookies for an oracle reading. I dare not take the chance. I was down to two cookies- and fifteen minutes in the class- when I decided to risk it. I held it in my hands, ready to twist. Does he like me? I asked myself. I held my breath. If there was more on the left side, than the answer would be yes. I twisted twice and...
The icing fell on the left side. I groaned. Maybe it was a defect. Come to think of it, I did see a crack on the side. I solemnly ate my cookie, as I did every time I consulted the Great Cookie Oracle. I pulled out my last cookie and asked the same question, but this time, I made clear to the cookie that the right side would mean yes, just to mix things up a bit. I twisted, and of course, it was on the right. I groaned. My friend gave me a look. The teacher did not notice. My life was over if he truly did like me.
After I put my books in my locker, I headed home. On the corner was Jordon. No, he was not the one I was concerned about. Nonetheless, I restrained from making eye-contact with him. He would think I was still a kid if he knew that I had consulted the cookie oracle. We walked home in silence until he stopped me a block before my house, where he lived. "What's wrong, Allie?" He asked. It was foolish of me to be concerned over such a small thing. He grabbed firmly to my arm and stared at me deeply. He truly thought something was wrong. I smiled.
"It's nothing. My mind was just wandering, that's all." I pushed my hair out of my eyes. He wouldn't believe me. I knew he wouldn't. But if I just played it out long enough, "Really, I'm fine. Don't worry about it." I said again, a bit stronger. Easy Allie, no need to get so defensive.
"I don't believe you, and the reality is that I have all night to wait for you to tell me, which is what I intend to do." He said, sticking his hands in his pockets and looking up to the sky briefly. It wasn't true. He had tae-kwan-doe tonight, and if I remember correctly some big deal rank thing. He wouldn't miss it for the world. But now that he was committed-
"Look, there's this guy and- what's wrong Jordon?" I asked. His face which was usually unreadable contorted into a strange emotion it obviously wasn't used to.
"What, did he ask you out or something?" His words were lined with some deep emotion like venom.
"Well no, it's just-" He sighed in relief. "What's gotten into you?"
"Allie, there's something I've been meaning to tell you." He said. Was he trembling? "I- I-uh...what are you doing Saturday? You want to go see a movie or something?" I stood in shock. Was this a friendly outing, or a date?
"Uh, sure. What time?" He smiled, which just confused me more.
"I don't know. I'll see what's on tomorrow and call you. I'll see you than!" He went off the direction to his own house, leaving me there in awe at his words. Perhaps I should have been more specific when I asked if 'he' liked me.
