Pokecommunity, there is a perpetual trend continuing to drown popular culture. Studies has shown that it has culminated to shocking levels in recent years. It seems there's a growing number of us who value what's different over what's good. Today, it is considered fashionable to resonate on a different frequency than the mainstream society.

Is this a legitimate way to embrace pop culture? Have you ever disliked something merely because it was popular? Have your tastes ever been influenced by popularity? These are burning questions people.

Remember, all stupid posts will be fed to the dogs.

I always have my own way of doing things, and I always come to my own conclusions. Those may or may not be different - it's whether it makes sense to me that matters. I don't care about what the mainstream constitutes for any purpose, for resistance or what.

The only problem I have with the whole hipster motif is that you should really be forming your opinion based on the thing itself, not extraneous factors like popularity. How can you like a band but not actually like them if that makes sense

    nah 'cause i'm not a **** lol

I like what I like no one has an influence on that. Being a musician it is hard to be picky seeing as I will listen to every genre at least once to see what kind of emotion, feeling, or what my imagination does when the music is playing. I honestly don't even know what is mainstream anymore.

"hipster" doesn't even mean anything anymore. I have never met any hipsters who actively dislike things because they're popular, unless we're talking about weird, creepy, neckbearded 4channers which are hardly even People. all the people that are like "HIPSTERS SUCK:" have you ever actually met a person that doesn't like things solely because they're popular? because that isn't, like, real, or at least it isn't in my experience.

and I kind of identify as a hipster, in a way, but again, what does that even mean?

Right? It's kind of lost all meaning. My friend jokingly calls me a hipster all the time cause I like a lot of indie bands and dress as the "stereotype" of the hipster. That is what it has become a stereotype or a subculutre of pretentious assholes who think mainstream things are terrible. Which is why I hate when he calls me that cause I'm not some stereotype and I love a lot of mainstream stuff. I don't try to be different with my tastes or what I like, it just interest me and what I like music wise. I don't enjoy things for their popularity either There's a good amount of really well like shows and bands I can't stand at all.

I dislike Wawa because it's super popular where I live. And that's really the only reason I dislike it.

I don't really care for labels and categorization of taste like one can always like what's mainstream and what isn't at the same time. The only thing is to not let others dictate your interests and tastes and become part of the herd mentality.

I feel like the hipster trend is dying out, thankfully. People just do what they want to do, and don't care about popularity. A couple years ago, I swear hating the mainstream was mainstream.

This hipster trend is the reason why I choose who to befriend carefully. A lot of users hating on things that are currently mainstream, including ones that are actually good, either have poor tastes or are really closed-minded. Be thankful that they aren't as bad as previous trends.

I think it's easy to dislike things that are popular not for effect but because the hype kills the art. The fans become incessant and annoying and it directs people to dislike the source. I don't personally agree with that - it's like hating someone because they have cancer instead of hating the cancer itself - but I do see how it can happen, and I don't think it makes people hipsters, not that being a hipster is even necessarily a bad thing if it's what you want.

As a kid I hated Harry Potter for a while because nobody would shut up about it and I couldn't be bothered reading the book, then I read the book and as every human does, loved it.

Kill a hipster, save your hood!

I don't like the whole modern popculture sucks attitude and people are wrong for liking it attitude, and for me that qualifies as a hipster. I don't think people really have an attitude to disliking something because it's popular. It's more that those people assume that it's popular so it isn't good in the first place.
