    Noah's Guide To EV Training!

Have you always been losing in Random Matchups to complete strangers? Are you tired of this? Do you actually want to put up a fight with the "Super Shuckle"? If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, you are ready for my guide. I am Noah, and I will teach YOU how to EV Train your Pokemon!

    EVs???
If you don't know what an EV is, you've come to the right place. EVs or Effort Values are hidden points given to your Pokemon after fighting specific Pokemon. For example, fighting 10 Timburr and evolving will increase your Attack stat more than using a rare candy, correct? You see, every Pokemon in the wild gives out EVs, from Absol to Zapdos. Now, look at one of your Pokemon (preferably one recently hatched, and is Level 1). It should have absolutely NO EVs if it has never been in a battle. It can have a maximum of 510 EVs (with the maximum of 255 in a specific stat).
Now, for every 4 EV points in a stat, that stat raises by one. Now, if you look at it like this, 255/4 isn't a whole number, but, 252/4 is. This means that having 252 EVs in a stat is actually BETTER than having 255. This is because you have the extra 6 (or 4, if you'd like) to put in another stat. Now that you have a basic understanding of EVs, you are ready for section two!

    Choosing Your Pokemon!
Right now, go through your PC for a low leveled Pokemon that you're willing to use for competitive battling. This is your new best friend. Give it a hug (for all you Beldum huggers out there, this one's for you). Now, if you have a Happiny, you're probably going to want it to have freakishly high HP and Defense stats. So, if you have an iPod Touch or something else with a Counter Application (Poketches), go and get that, too. If you're playing Black and White, go and find some Pokemon with really high HP stats (Audino or Stunfisk). Since Audino is purty rare, you may want to stick to Stunfisk for now. You can find Stunfisk in the puddles at Icirrus City. They will give you each 2 EVs for HP. So, now, go and log 2 steps in your counter. Continue to do this 126 times if you want to have the maximum stat points in HP (63) from EV training. You are now an EV trainer!

    Moar Advanced Stuffz Pweeze?
Now that you've gotten the hang of EV training, it's time to test out your skills. Go and select another Pokemon. Then, go find the Smogon strategy page for it under the game you're playing. You should see some abilities, some movesets and, on the right-hand side, you should see something that says EVs. For the sake of this, I'm using BW Pikachu. Under EVs, it says 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe. This means that it has 4 EVs for Defense and 252 for both Special Attack and Speed. Remember, everything on the Smogon page is a suggestion! You can customize it all if you want! Now, once you've understood all of this, use your counter and EV train your Pokemon. Here is a handy guide for some basic EVs. It will show you what Pokemon to beat and which ones to leave alone.

Pokerus and the EV Enhancing Items?
Now you know how to EV train. Isn't it a very laborious process? What if I could tell you that you can make this easier? Here are some ways.
Power Anklet - Adds four Speed EVs at the end of a battle when given to a Pokemon. It also makes reduces your speed during the battle by half.

Power Band - Adds four Sp. Defense EVs at the end of a battle when given to a Pokemon. It also makes reduces your speed during the battle by half.

Power Lens - Adds four Sp. Attack EVs at the end of a battle when given to a Pokemon. It also makes reduces your speed during the battle by half.

Power Belt - Adds four Defense EVs at the end of a battle when given to a Pokemon. It also makes reduces your speed during the battle by half.

Power Bracer - Adds four Attack EVs at the end of a battle when given to a Pokemon. It also makes reduces your speed during the battle by half.

Power Weight - Adds four HP EVs at the end of a battle when given to a Pokemon. It also makes reduces your speed during the battle by half.

Macho Brace - Multiplies the number of EVs given during the battle when a Pokemon holds onto it. It also halves the speed during the battle.

Note: All of these items can be stacked onto the Pokerus bonus.

    Pokerus
Pokerus is a virus that is extremely rare. If any Pokemon is infected with Pokerus, its EV gain will double. For example, if you defeat a Magikarp and get the 2 Speed EVs it gives out, the Pokerus would increase it to 4 EVs. This can be stacked onto the Power Items. For example, with the Power Anklet on, and Pokerus, defeating one Magikarp would give you a whopping 12 Speed EVs for your Pokemon! Awesome, right?

    Vitamins
In Pokemon, we have some vitamins, just like in the real world. They are beneficial to our Pokemon's EVs, giving 10 EV points per vitamin. Each Pokemon can receive 10 of each.

HP Up - Probably the hardest to explain. These items raise your Pokemon's HP EVs.

Protein - These items raise your Pokemon's Attack EVs.

Iron - These items raise your Pokemon's Defense EVs.

Calcium - These items raise your Pokemon's Special Attack EVs.

Zinc - These items raise your Pokemon's Special Defense EVs.

Carbos - These items raise your Pokemon's Speed EVs.

EV Wings - Introduced in Pokemon Black and White, the EV wings raise a Pokemon's EVs by one in the specific stat for it. They have NO limit to how many you can use.
    Health Wing - HP
    Muscle Wing - Attack
    Resist Wing - Defense
    Genius Wing - Sp. Attack
    Clever Wing - Sp. Defense
    Swift Wing - Speed

    Bad Stuff
Besides the helpful items listed above, there are also BAD items for your Pokemon's EVs. Here is a quick run down of them all:

Rare Candies - Rare candies are hardened berry juice. They raise the level of your Pokemon by one, but don't give them the nutrition of regularly trained Pokemon.

Friendship Berries - Introduced in Generation 3 were special berries. They raised the friendship of your Pokemon, yet reduced the specific EVs by 10 EV Points. Here is the list of them:
    HP - Pomeg
    Atk. - Kelpsy
    Def. - Qualot
    Sp.A - Hondew
    Sp.D - Grepa
    Spe - Tamato

    What do Experience Shares do?
Experience Shares will also share the EVs from a battle.

    Ask away!

    Closing
Now you know how to EV train your Pokemon! Go and defeat EVERYONE on Random Matchup now! You know you want to! :3

Note: All positive effects of this guide are entirely my fault. If anything bad happens, I was never here.

Oops, sorry about that. Didn't realize you moved it. Thanks, wolf! :D

Good guide, I was unaware of the logic behind the 252 thing until now haha. Mention of vitamins and the reducing berries would be helpful though.

Okay. I knew I was forgetting something!

Katie's right, EV reducing berries are a big part of EV training, especially if you want to EV train a favorite that trained with you throughout the story. In addition, vitamins (and feathers) should be added as they relate directly to EVs.

I would recommend in the Pokemon to beat guide you put where you can find them. Just the Pokemon isn't that helpful, especially if they're found in many areas but some are better than others. Also Stunfisk isn't the best Pokemon for EVs as it's much harder to find than Audino.

I added those items, plus a few more. I am now going to add the locations of the Pokemon to find. However, Stunfisk has a 100% chance of turning up in the puddles of Iccirus City according to "Mekkah**" of Smogon. Audino has to be found by the use of rustling grass, which (correct me if I'm wrong) is a random event.

Until it's Winter and every puddle is frozen and you need to train HP EVs. Audino are random events but every step, not just in the grass, and they only appear in your line of vision. So the idea is you run back and forth with just the edge of the grass in your vision (not IN the grass), and within a few back-and-forths the grass shakes and it's like a what, 98% chance it's an Audino or something ridiculous like that in every route?

I did not know the puddles froze over... Sorry. Hahaha, I just got the game during Summer so it's only Autumn. I'll add that, too. Thanks, Toujours! :D

I wouldn't call the EV reducing berries "bad" for your EVs. Like Toujours pointed out, they're useful for reducing the EVs of the Pokemon you've been using in-game before moving on to using them competitively. You can also use them for correcting any mistakes you may have made during or after your EV training.

And also mention that if you give an EV reducing berry to a Pokemon with over 100 EVs for that particular stat, the EVs for that stat will become 100.

B2W2 kinda kills the pains and hard effort for EV Training though Thanks to Join Avenue.

    Spoiler:

Um. Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but there's an EV training guide in the Black and White forum. And if anyone ever had questions about EV training, there are plenty of Q&A threads spread out on the forum. Sorry you typed all this up and stuff, but if CBC doesn't want it, PGC doesn't need it, and there's already essentially this guide in the BW FAQ, then it just doesn't have a place.
