    Okay... I'm not sure how this falls into PC rules, so I hope this is okay.

    As VH noted in another thread, Elixant will be closing. This is... depressing to say the least. Especially seeing as a large number of our webmasters here are hosted on one or more of their servers.

    Therefore, I would like to propose... possibly... that we gang up together, and purchase a good quality dedicated server. Together, as a community.

    This would, of course, require funds. A goodly amount of them, to pay for a server.

    But, in return, we would have full control over our server. We would be able to install what we want, not install what we don't want (That stupid thing that blocks IPs continually...).

    JA and I have thought of purchasing one together before, but really... we don't have the funds ourselves.

    If anyone would be interested in joining, even if you could only help by putting $10 or so in a month to help pay, reply here.

    If enough people are interested, we could possibly get this going. :)

    Please only reply if you are seriously interested.

    This is...wow. I never thought I'd see Elixant close. I never planned on going anywhere else, and I've always had nothing but satisfaction and always been happy with Elixant.

    I'll definitely try to help out with this. I know it's something that we talked about a while back, but Elixant was always such a good service that we never really needed it.

    I've been talking to people over IM, and yeah... we're depressed over the news. We're Elixant Refugees now.

    If we went through with this, we could purchase one domain that would serve as the "main" domain. On this, we could deal with donations and stuff.

    People needn't have any experience with servers. I have a couple friends that would be more than qualified to help out controlling it.

    Sigh....

    Let's try and get a list of who would be interested by the beginning of January. We have less than 3 months to figure this out. If we do this, we should all be on the new server by the beginning of March ideally.

    Current list of possibles:
    - Geoff
    - Myself
    - JA
    - saul

    Brandon said that if Paul supports this, he'll be willing to help support too.

    I'm interested, but I honestly don't have more than $10/month to spend on hosting. $120/year is what I'm at now, and it's because my parents just pay the credit card bill that I have it...

    ...so I'm more interested in finding an affordable host. I wouldn't be a good financial asset for this, especially in Japan. Sorry, I'm horrible, but just my current situation ;<

    Its kinda sad, before this I only heard of Elixant in passing, do we know what Pokemon sites specifically are hosted on there service and why so many ended up there?

    Where would you be looking to buy this server from?
    More research is needed, and we're trying to find something.

    For as many resources as your site is currently using, and you have planned... good luck. You are unlikely to find a quality host that can support how much you need for a decent price.

    I'm going to guess that there are somewhere between 15 and 20 odds and ends sites. Most were referred there because of the amazing service.

    I don't know how much I can put up, but I am willing to help :)

    Well, I'm already on a dedicated server, so I don't see why I should take part in this. :/ Good luck, though.

    I already have two sites in mind Greg.

    And technically I wasn't saying no, I'm just saying $10/month would be my max. Which isn't very helpful.

    Care to say which they are?

    $10 would be a helpful amount towards the higher goal.

    That'd be great. :) Are you an Elixant refugee?

    L1-INTEL-CEL-2.0+-B
    Base System Configuration:
    * Intel Celeron 2.0GHz
    * 80GB Hard Drive
    * 512MB RAM
    * Bandwidth: 1500GB
    * IP Addresses: 8 (5 usable)
    * Private VLAN
    * Basic Resource Monitoring
    * FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Linux, Windows*
    * 100% Self Managed and Dedicated
    Monthly Fee Options:
    $75 | $19 Setup

    $75 a month is not bad. Here's some estimates that I got from some potentially interested parties.
    - Robo $10ish
    - saul $20ish
    - JA $10ish

    That's $40 - I could throw in $20ish, and that brings us up to $60.

    If Haunter Master or Paul joins in, they could bring us... I don't know, $20ish? Which would take us over the top. But then...

    Adding CPanel is an extra $25 a month. So that brings us to $100... a month.

    *sigh* I don't know if this is possible....

    I am not a refugee, but me paying will have to wait till Feb, I still have to pay FPC Paul $25 for hosting, I can try to get maybe 10-ish on Jan 3rd, so just hold up ^_^
    and do we NEED cPanel, I mean, I love it, I do, but there are others, I mean, ZPanel isn't the best, but it's free, but hey, what do I know.

    Yeah IRC ftw!
    NB maybe
    but idk personally

    I might be able to contribute about 10$ of my weekly 10 bucks allowance. This isn't a very accurate possibility, but I hope for the best. :);
    That would be nice :)

    So you'd like to get in on it?
    Wouldn't sharing an dedicated by say seven people (seven people owning one server) would casue problems?
    The idea is that each person would only use as much resources as they pay for.

    All seven/whatever people that help pay for it wouldn't have full control over it. The server "admins" would be 2 or 3 of us that actually know what we're doing, and we'd control it.

    It'd be kinda like hosting, except you're getting one HELL of a deal (1500GB BW at 10 people even gives ~150GB each, and that's damn nice, plus 80GB/10 people = ~8 GB a person).

    That way we don't have people accidentally blowing up the server

    cPanel also gives us access to WHM, which is the most ultimate tool possible. I don't know if ZPanel has anything similar.

    And $25 isn't that big of a difference, if it'd make our lives about 25X easier.
    We can install actual programs right? If so, this would be really cool in-case we want to add IRC servers, NB, etc. if possible
    The place I have linked above doesn't allow IRC servers, but we could do something like a netbattle server I would think. :) Not sure how that all works though.

    In an IM, Robo didn't seem pleased with the idea of a Celeron processor.

    There is this one:
    * AMD Sempron 2600
    * 80GB IDE Hard Drive
    * 512MB DDR RAM
    * Bandwidth: 1500GB
    * IP Addresses: 8 (5 usable)
    * Private VLAN
    * Basic Resource Monitoring
    * FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Linux, Windows*
    * 100% Self Managed and Dedicated
    Which is $5 a month cheaper.

    Current List
    - Robo (~$10)
    - JA (~$10)
    - saul (~$20)
    - Greg (~$20)
    - Faltzer (~$10)
    - Haunter Master (~$10)

    Possible?
    - Paul (~$10)

    You should add me to the possible, I need to ask my mom, it's not that I won't pay, it's that I can't pay a lot, we aren't the richest family.
