I think while the overall worldwide popularity of Pokemon is nowhere near what it used to be, it is still an absolutely huge franchise, and still has potential to make so many different games.
I would certainly support having 1,000 different Pokemon, as difficult as it would be to keep track of all of them. But it gives the game makers a lot of potential ideas. I mean I'm sure we will keep bugging Nintendo to make a 3D RPG for the Wii or the next gen Nintendo console whenever that will be. Like a 3D version of the handheld games. Of course there will be updates to Diamond/Pearl (the 3rd game), Gold/Silver/Crystal remakes, maybe other game remakes, then a few more series (most likely with a 5th generation set of Pokemon), plus games for the Wii like Pokemon Battle Revolution 2 (or whatever they call it), maybe turn Pokemon Farm into a proper game, maybe more of the old games come to the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console, like Pokemon Snap already has. The possibilities are nearly endless.
I may be living in cloud cuckoo land, and the reality is only some of these will happen, but the point I'm making is that this franchise is far from done, and the possibilities are nearly endless.
No matter how many people get sick of Pokemon, they will always have the die-hard fans like many here on PC.
