US President Obama ends young migrant deportations

US President Barack Obama has announced an immediate end to the deportation of illegal immigrants who came to the US as children, describing the move as "the right thing to do".

Those aged between 16 and 30 who have lived in the US for five years could now be eligible for work permits.

The move is seen as addressing a key Latino concern in an election year.

But Mr Obama's Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, said it was the wrong way to approach the problem.

Mr Romney said the issue should be dealt with by legislation, rather than an executive order "that can be reversed by subsequent presidents".

The plan, which goes into effect immediately, is expected to affect as many as 800,000 people.

Mr Obama and his Republican opponent Mitt Romney are courting Hispanic voters in key states ahead of November's election.

With the hyper-partisan gridlock in Washington, and the failure of the DREAM Act to pass due to the Filibuster hurdle during the last seesion of Congress, this may be considered a lower substitute for it. But alas this does not even address the need to reform the immigration system here in the US.

Romney is right. This move won't make these people legal. They still can't get jobs or receive federal financial aid for college.

Obama is trying to pander to Latino voters. While he will likely carry the majority of Latino voters, Romney might still be able to carry a good chunk of them. For example, Bush won 44% of the national Latino vote in 2004, compared to McCain barely getting 30% in 2008.

Really is a smart move on all counts.

And lol and Romney having any chance at the latino vote.

The ones in Florida vote Republican. Immigrants from communist countries (i.e. Cubans) are a reliable Republican voting bloc. High Cuban turnout could help the GOP nominee carry Florida.

Why did they block the Dream Act anyway? Wasn't that a Republican idea in the first place?

That's because they're pushing their own version of it written by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).

Uhuh...Which only exists in the imagination. There's totally no detail at all as to what it is or what it will contain due to the split between anti-immigrant and pro-immigration wings of the Republican Party. In the end it will probably just allow citizenship for Military Veterans which is totally absurd considering the scope of the problem. >_>

    That makes sense.

If you want citizenship, you should either serve in the military or get in the immigration line with everyone else.

They can get jobs, it's just the chances of them getting a job isn't high because of the economy.

When it comes to the Republican party, some immigrants are misinformed and think of the Republican party during Abe Lincoln's time(you know, back when it was good).

You can't legally work in the United States if you are an illegal immigrant. That's why letting illegals into college is meaningless.

And Cubans vote Republican because the Democrats support government intervention the economy, which the GOP has effectively branded as socialism to them.

Uh huh. Back to square one again. And considering the "immigration line" consists of the absurd quota system and is a whole huge bureaucracy upon itself "the line" usually takes years to decades at times.

And in the end that is a philosophical and ideological difference that cannot be bridged I suppose, considering there IS already a provision for military veterans to gain citizenship LOL. The problem is getting them official and legal Permanent Residency status to start the process.
