Over the course of the Pokémon series, there have been Pokémon that are exclusive to each version of a game set. Some examples are obvious, such as the cover legendaries, but some can be easily overseen. Was there ever a couple of Pokémon you didn't even imagine were version exclusives?

For me, it took me some time to realize Mantine and Skarmory were version counterparts in HG/SS lol

saddens me to this day that I'm unable to catch Alolan Vulpix in Moon/Ultra Moon

I mean I have one anyway that was traded to me but still... being unable to find one in the wild kinda sucks. u.u

I've always liked the trading aspect of the games. Trading with friends when I was young was always a lot of fun. Now only a couple of friends still play but it's still fun to go on the forums. That being said there is some strange stuff, especially with games like Yellow or Crystal where you can obtain certain Pokemon in both Red and Blue/Gold and Silver but not in the third version of the game. Like you can't get the Weedle line in Yellow and you can't get Mareep in Crystal.

I never had trouble detecting a version exclusive as such. The one thing that I did not know back in the day was that Caterpie and Weedle weren't version exclusives in Red and Blue. Reason for that is that one is a lot more common in one version than the other. Having played Blue even after many hours I never encountered a Weedle in the wild, which is why I assumed it to be version exclusive. And then I found one by accident.

In my ignorance back then, I remember spending a large amount of time searching for a Sandshrew and a Bellsprout in Pokémon Red.
