I have been playing through crystal for a little bit more than in game days according to the time on the save screen and just noticed my Growlithe and a few other Pokémon were displaying the wrong Pokémon that was caught. While training up Growithe, she learn Rock Throw at Level 14, which Growlithe Cannot learn in Generation 2 under no circumstance. Which I thought was weird and check to see a normal Growlithe learn set. Upon looking at my Growlithe's Stats menu I see she has been replace as the caught Pokémon with Onix. I checked Onix's learnset and behold, Onix learns Rock throw at level 14. Is my save file corrupted? Have I somehow triggered a glitch? Most importantly, can I save it?

This image was taken before she learned Rock Throw.

There was a report of a similar glitch on Reddit where her Politoed accidentally turned into a Lugia or Ho-Oh, but I can't seem to find it. It mentioned it happens when you corrupt your PC boxes and the fix is to put the corrupted Pokemon in the daycare. I'd ask someone who knows more about gen 2 glitches. You "can" save it and keep it as an onix, but if you want your Growlithe with its original move set, I think that's what you have to do. I don't think this will pass through poke transporter if you're playing on virtual console as this is a bug.

So it will turn back into a Growlithe in the daycare, because I have like 7 pokemon that this has happened to and I don't even know how I did it?

Oh, do you want those 7 Pokemon back to what they were? Are they all the same onix? I would recommend putting 1 or 2 at a time leaving them there until they level up and see if they revert their moves, sprite, and name back. If this doesn't fix the pokemon, can you just find another Growlithe or any of the other Pokemon that were corrupted in the wild? Did you have sentimental value to these 7, were they version exclusive to another game, or raised them for particular battles? The only problem is if you leveled them up to a point where they don't learn any new moves, you'll have to go to the move deleter in blackthorne city to delete moves it can't learn and teach it a tm move for that spot. Tell me if putting your Pokemon in the daycare worked or not. You're in the clear if your Growlithe turned Onix was level 14 with rock throw.

idk if it can happen in-party but I know that "hybridization" can at least happen to boxed 'mon if the power is turned off/dies before the game fully saves, if things were moved around since the last complete save.

You can also evolve hybridized Pokémon to stabilize them, turning them into the evolution of whatever they had changed into. I remember taking advantage of the glitch years ago to get a Shiny Jumpluff with the elemental punches. EDIT: This won't be possible with Onix, however, since hybrids are prevented from being traded.

I think the user wants the original Pokemon back and doesn't know how it specifically happened. Would the daycare method revert the Pokemon? That's cool about the shiny jumpluff. Is this a form of arbitrary code execution?

Can't recall if I've ever tried the Day-Care method. On physical cartridge, however, they can be fixed by connecting to Pokémon Stadium 2.

    Not ACE. https://glitchcity.wiki/wiki/Unstable_hybrid_Pokémon

Ok, the method of hybridization is rather a glitch. What if OP's was in virtual console or rom? Stadium can't connect to those.
