![[PokeCommunity.com] Weird Type Fun v1.93 (complete type swap hack) [PokeCommunity.com] Weird Type Fun v1.93 (complete type swap hack)](https://i.imgur.com/w3llvsu.png)
OVERVIEW
Weird Type Fun is a simple rom hack with an even simpler concept: to have even series veterans be confused about type matchups. With 18 all new types and a completely reimagined pokédex to match, WTF makes the ever familiar Kanto a little bit less so.
While WTF sticks mostly to the core FireRed story and structure, some characters and lore has been changed around to keep things fresh. Event only areas (aka Navel Rock and Birth Island) have been made accessible through gameplay and a couple of new locations and small events have been added in.
FEATURES
- All types have been replaced with new alternatives. Type matchups do not mirror original.
- 400-ish pokémon, assembled from up to gen 9 (thus including Hisui and Paldea). Also includes a couple of beta pokémon and fakemon.
- Each pokémon has been redesigned to fit its new type (think Fool's Gold, except more nonsensical)
- Moves and items updated to match the new types
- Mostly faithful Gen III Kanto experience with some new twists

Spoiler:
Version 1.93
Download the patch here!
I have now made the version with phys/spec split and other QoL updates the main version. If you update to this version from a previous non-QoL build, make sure to deposit your TMs in a PC and save inside a Pokémon Center or Mart before updating your game file, as well as check that all your game and save files have the same name. Thank you to everyone in Pebbler Platoon for making this all possible, my little rom hack is growing up...!
I'm also starting work on a big balance update. I will avoid bumping the number up to 2.0 before that, so any patches until then will only contain bug fixes (as opposed to QoL additions or such) and will remain in the 1.9s.
1.93 Changes
- Meloetta and Thundurus had their locations listed wrong in documentation. They're now correct.
- Renamed the documentation file from PokémonLocations to PokédexGuide for clarity
- Halved the time eggs take to hatch for most species, reduced it significantly for the rest
- Rotom, Mimikyu, Poipole and Naganadel can now breed
- Added an extra Shiny Stone to Route 7 and an extra Chaos Stone to Route 16
1.92 Changes
- Kecleon and Kecneon were mistakenly of the Sound type (half and full respectively). They are now Light type as originally intended.
- The move Trampoline had the wrong description, both in attack and TM form. This is now fixed.
- It was possible to get softlocked in the Pokémon Tower when encountering Delibird thanks to the unfortunate combination of not having a Silph Scope and the ability Shadow Tag. To circumvent this, Delibird now only appears on the top floor, which can only be entered after obtaining the Silph Scope.
- Phantump can now be encountered on floors 5 and 6 of Pokémon Tower instead of Delibird. It is quite rare, but lv23 Repel Trick works.
- Updated documentation with above encounter changes
1.91 Changes
- Removed Shedinja's 1 HP hardcoding from Bruxish
1.9 Changes
- Teala, the attendant on floor 2 of any Pokémon Center, can now engage the player in "training battles". These battles are against pokémon with high EXP yield and no attacking moves. Her team size and levels will increase during the story with certain milestones like badges or becoming the Champion. She will also give the player 5 Rare Candies upon each defeat, and can be fought repeatedly.
- Mr.Fuji actually checks and alerts the player now if they don't have room to take Cosmog Smog from him.
- The move Gastric Flu had the wrong description, this is fixed now.
- Fixed Choas type Eevee's leveling group
- Added Repel Trick possibility for Slowpoke and Pachirisu on routes 24 and 25 and included them in the documentation.
1.8 Changes
- Zygarde and Mew are no longer disobedient
- Redesigned Castform's base form. The reason for this is that Castform is hardcoded to revert to a "Normal" aka Knight type if there is no weather, so I decided to reflect this.
- Buffed Castfrom's defences and HP to compensate/reflect this change. It's BST is now 470.
- Castform can now breed
- Buffed Spinda. It's BST is now 475.
- Made the move Null Rush work like Psywave to circumvent the issue where Void type attacking moves are underpowered due to not drawing from either attacking stat. This is a temporary band-aid solution until I fix the actual issue.
1.7 Changes
- The genders of both Eevee (void) and Eevee (chaos) now show up like normal
- New evolution items now say "Use" instead of "Check". I still don't recommend giving them to pokémon as held items.
- No random arrows appear in Machop's Cave & Ennea Desert cave anymore. The latter received a minor overhaul as well.
- TM10 (Hidden Power) can now be found in Ennea Desert since it is no longer in the Pickup table
- Running Shoes are now given out at the start of Route 2 instead of after Pewter Gym
- Added some ground items on new maps just to make them more lively
- Adjusted Egg Moves, nothing too ridiculous should show up and more pokémon have them now
- Adjusted Rotom's cry (again)
- Fixed overflow on Faller Stone's description
- Buffed the exp Vespiquen gives out
1.6 Changes
- Updated encounters on a few routes, the most major changes being to Route 24 and 25 to make them less samey as suggested
- Voltorb, Chatot, Kricketot, Absol, Tentacool, Seedot and Horsea are now in the wild before post-game Sevii Islands, though some as rare encounters. For the rare ones, repel trick levels are provided in documentation for anyone interested in hunting them down early!
- Pikablu now also has a repel trick level provided
- Updated documentation with the above
- Fixed the issue where Six Island would never register as a fly location
- Buffed Fury Swipes slightly to 25 base power and 90 accuracy
- Changed some level up moves with Eldegoss and Gumshoos to better play to their respective better attack stats
- Replaced Hustle on the Roselia line with Guts
1.5 Changes
- Gemstone, Razor Claw, Hourglass, Sweet Heart, Loud Whistle, Chaos Stone, Premium Gem, Up-Grade and Comet Piece are now also purchasable in the Celadon Dept. Store
- You can find a single Whipped Dream in the restaurant in Celadon. The item doesn't play nice with shop interfaces (likely due to the length of its name), so that is why it's not included in the group of items above. It's also still infinitely purchasable in Blackthorn City from Old Mom as before.
- Fixed punctuation issue and alignment with Vaporeon and Eldegoss pokedex entries
1.4 Changes
- Oak's aides no longer only count "kanto dex" pokémon for the items they give
- Blackthorn City now has a fly spot! It only displays the name "Johto", which will be mended in possible future updates
- Fixed the issue with the hiker who would show up between the player starting the Blackthorn quest and picking up the Aid Parcel, he stays gone now
- Rival's palette no longer goes haywire in the introduction after he is given a custom name...but now the girl player character's is bugged out instead 8D An improvement but not the final solution.
- Opening animation and title screen no longer have stray pixels
- Fixed some movement permission issues on two maps
- Some gym trainers have had their teams adjusted
- Buffed the moves Taste Test, Diaper Darts and Bowling
- Bulk Up had the wrong description, fixed now
- Documentation was fixed yet again in regards to an encounter in Beta Ruins
- The item Patch Notes had its description overflow, fixed
- Slowbro's pokédex entry also overflowed, also fixed
1.3 Changes
- This is the version of the game with various quality of life features implemented, such as physical/special split, infinite TMs and more. If you still want the "vanilla gen III" version, it is available at the end of the download section. Note that that version still has some of the issues listed as fixed below, and won't be receiving further development.
- Running shoes now work on all maps, including new ones and spaces that are inside
- Adjusted pickup table so that TM10 won't be given to the player repeatedly since there is no need for multiples now
- Fixed an issue where the player could get softlocked in the house of the guy who gives out Super Rod
- Fixes to badly aligned move texts courtesy of Sadfish ^^
1.2 Changes
- Updated documentation, turns out it still contained some out of date information.
- TMs are now infinite! If you're planning to continue a 1.1 or 1.0 save file, make sure to deposit all your TMs into the PC and save inside any pokémon center or mart before you update your game file! Also remember to make sure your saves and new ROM share an exact name (the patch has the version number upped so either update your save file names or don't use the patch name).
- Fixed pokémon habitats, which should get rid of the pokedex-showing-wrong-pokemon-when-caught issue! I could not have done this alone so thank you so much for helping me destroy my biggest pet peeve bug
- Increased shiny odds. They should now be 1/1024
- Fixed an NPC in Sylph Spa who was scriptless (he never had anything plot/event crucial to say but he deserves to be heard!)
- Rotom's glitched out cry is fixed, it now randomly sounds like Mantine but I'll take it
1.1 Changes
- Documentation had some outdated information but should now be accurate
- Fixed the NPC that is supposed to give you Munna, the phys/spec patch had somehow broken the event and made the pokédex uncompleteable
- Fixed Skitty's exp group
- Fixed several pokémon that would lose their ability after evolution
- TM39 description was wrong, fixed now
- Buffed various multihit moves. This is a temporary band-aid to make them not completely useless, I plan to update them more thoroughly in the future.
- A trade is now moved from Cinnabar Island to Blackthorn City, for no other reason than to make a wink-wink-nudge-nudge reference to HGSS
The download is a zip file that includes a ups patch as well as a type effectiveness chart, a spreadsheet of pokémon locations and evolution methods as well as a copy of the list of known issues
If anyone still needs the vanilla version (without physical/special split, infinite TMs etc), you can still find it here. It has some but not all of the non-QoL fixes listed above.
KNOWN ISSUES
This is very much a first rom hack situation. A funny sprite project got out of hand and I learned rom hacking on the go.
There is the occasional oddity/issue with the hack I have yet to figure out how to fix (some of them directly caused by my blunders early on in the project, haha). Nothing game-breaking as far as testing has revealed, but I will list what I know here for reference.
Spoiler:
- Girl player character's palette messes up in the opening sequence if you give the rival a custom name. Won't affect the rest of the game.
- Shrinking sprite also gets pixelated
- Rival walks up to the wrong ball when choosing starter, gets the right pokémon though
- Rival's first optional battle near Viridian doesn't trigger
- Pokédex automatically records some late game legendaries as seen
- Teachy TV can crash the game when used, hence it is not given out.
- When giving the items Whipped Dream, Faller Stone, Gemstone, Plain Stone, Shiny Stone, Razor Claw, Hourglass, Sweet Heart, Loud Whistle, Chaos Stone, Premium Gem or Link Cable for pokemon to hold, you can end up with some pretty glitchy effects (anything from item duplication to turning boxed pokemon to bad eggs). So play around with that at your own risk
These items can be used and deposited to the PC like normal as long as they're not attached to pokémon.
- Several trainers have pokémon they're not intended to have, mainly some rival fights
- The move Camouflage has rather nonsensical effects
- Dodydra's front sprite's beak does...stuff...when it uses Fusion Dance
- TM icon colours don't match types in bag
- Void type moves are much weaker than they should be based on their base power
Q&A
Spoiler:
Which types are physical / special in the old "vanilla gen 3" version?
- Physical: Knight, Dexterity, Beast, Nature, Tech, Toy, Food, Chimera, Cosmic
- Special: Magic, Dream, Light, Sound, Time, Gem, Chaos, Love
- Neither: Void
What game is the patch based on?
FireRed 1.0
WHAT'S NEXT
- Fixing known issues
- Fixing any other issues that turn up
- Any quality of life improvements I can think of / learn to do
- Redoing several sprites / designs (you can tell which ones were made first)
COMING SOMEDAY, EVENTUALLY, MAYBE
Spoiler:
- Expansions to Pokédex
- More of Johto made accessible
- Other new areas and events
Thanks for your interest in my silly little rom hack! It was small and broken in the beginning, but with the help of this awesome community it's growing into its own!
