[PokeCommunity.com] Weird Type Fun v1.93 (complete type swap hack)

    OVERVIEW

Weird Type Fun is a simple rom hack with an even simpler concept: to have even series veterans be confused about type matchups. With 18 all new types and a completely reimagined pokédex to match, WTF makes the ever familiar Kanto a little bit less so.

While WTF sticks mostly to the core FireRed story and structure, some characters and lore has been changed around to keep things fresh. Event only areas (aka Navel Rock and Birth Island) have been made accessible through gameplay and a couple of new locations and small events have been added in.

    FEATURES

    • All types have been replaced with new alternatives. Type matchups do not mirror original.
    • 400-ish pokémon, assembled from up to gen 9 (thus including Hisui and Paldea). Also includes a couple of beta pokémon and fakemon.
    • Each pokémon has been redesigned to fit its new type (think Fool's Gold, except more nonsensical)
    • Moves and items updated to match the new types
    • Mostly faithful Gen III Kanto experience with some new twists

    SCREENSHOTS
    Spoiler:

    CREDITS

    • Original design of fusions Dustata & Furran as well as fakemon Bloff & Hemocula by Wish
    • Awesome banner art by Wish
    • Fakemon Nanner is a direct reference to this Drawfee video
    • Leagues of support from Pebbler Platoon, especially Sadfish, with testing, fixing bugs and other issues, your help has already made the hack so much more polished!
    • Everything else by me, aka enwaitea

    Spoiler:

    KNOWN ISSUES

This is very much a first rom hack situation. A funny sprite project got out of hand and I learned rom hacking on the go.

There is the occasional oddity/issue with the hack I have yet to figure out how to fix (some of them directly caused by my blunders early on in the project, haha). Nothing game-breaking as far as testing has revealed, but I will list what I know here for reference.

    Spoiler:

    Q&A

    Spoiler:

    WHAT'S NEXT
    • Fixing known issues
    • Fixing any other issues that turn up
    • Any quality of life improvements I can think of / learn to do
    • Redoing several sprites / designs (you can tell which ones were made first)

    COMING SOMEDAY, EVENTUALLY, MAYBE
    Spoiler:

Thanks for your interest in my silly little rom hack! It was small and broken in the beginning, but with the help of this awesome community it's growing into its own!

I've been playing the game for a bit, I think the concept and most of the spritework behind it are phenomenal but I'm mildly confused by the lack of icons next to the moves when checking information about them paired with the new typing system. Is physical/special split in this game? If not, which types are part of which category?

Thank you for giving it a shot and for your nice words! :)

This is based on vanilla FireRed due to my initial (and still relative) inexperience with modern rom hacking, so no physical/special split. This is something I definitely hope to implement in the future, of course! The lack of icons is either because of this or because of a fumble of mine, I will look into that too.

The current categories are as follows:

Physical: Knight, Dexterity, Beast, Nature, Tech, Toy, Food, Chimera, Cosmic, Void
Special: Magic, Dream, Light, Sound, Time, Gem, Chaos, Love

Thank you for asking, too, I should absolutely add this information to the download pack and top post!

I've been playing the game at my own pace and so far it's gone well for the most part, but I ran into a bit of a small bug with the Machop line where they seem to lose their ability upon evolving. I had a Guts Machop that lost its ability on evolution, so I tried catching one with Swift Swim but the same happened to it. On the other hand, it looks like, from experience, that Machoke caught in the wild always have Guts as their ability. Evolving them into Machamp doesn't fix the ones with no ability, but the ones with Guts still keep it, so right now in order to use the line functionally you pretty much have to catch a Machoke.

Thank you for catching this! Of course I missed something so obvious on an early mon 😅Luckily this was a really quick fix, I will update the download pack with a hopefully fully functional Machop 🫡

I might also add a separate download for a version with the physical / special split implemented while I'm at it. I was able to apply this phys/spec split patch as well as update moves / pokémon movepools to match, but so far I've only had time to test the rom to the point that it doesn't crash immediately and does indeed display the icons. I can't guarantee nothing further down broke from patching it this late into the process and it's only me testing, but I'm kind of excited about how easy it apparenlty was hah.

Again, thanks for your interest and help so far!

This hack is a breath of fresh air, great work! Love all of the mon designs ^_^

Hey i have a question, are the shiny odds the same as Fire Red or are they increased?
Since i just got a shiny Dunsparce i wanted to see if It is rare

Glad to see the thread is back! I've been playing the game this past week and I'm having a blast, it's a simple concept but this has become my hack highlight for this year. Excited to see where this project will go next!

The game suprisingly fun. Thank you for this

I've been playing this a while it's such an interesting rom. will there be a Type Chart and Documentation for it? This might be a very interesting Nuzlocke.

Thank youuuu! ^^ Mon designs are where most of the love went haha!

the game looks good but i have two questions
1: is the exp.share a key item or just the held item version
2: what are the shiny odds???
The exp.share is just the usual held item version! The shiny odds are vanilla as well, so the usual 1/8,192. I think increasing the odds to something like 1/1000 or even 1/500 I've seen other hacks go for is something I'd like to do in the future though! If I do find a way to do it easily, I'll update the thread with a new version.

It's the base FR odds! Even I have only found a single shiny during my hours and hours of testing (and that was in a very early, very broken build) so you were very lucky! 😄

    Oh my gosh, thank you!! ;__;

Type chart and encounter / evolution item locations are indeed included in the zip file of the patch! I wouldn't mind adding the same info to the top post too, though, if that makes it more accessible.

The game suprisingly fun. Thank you for this
Thank you back, I'm so glad there are people who enjoy my silly little hack! :D

The game's been really fun so far! The types are super unique, and the sprite/designwork is fantastic. Do you plan on doing more with this or making another hack?

Hey it keeps freezing at the beginning idk if it's the version of firered I use (1.1) or if it's something else

    Thank you! I'm currently testing to make sure the physical/special split is playing nice, but after that I could definitely do more (got some benched pokémon designs / events and areas). Another hack is also possibly in the books at some point, now that I have some knowhow and am less likely to break stuff from the get-go ^^;

Thanks for the interest and nice comments!

Yoooooo this romhack looks absolutely sick! Astounding spritework and apparently pretty cool changes, I'm gonna play it for sure!

also, is there a discord server for this romhack? I'd love to talk with other fans of it or just seeing hypothetical updates

Oh sorry, I missed this! I haven't had this happen myself. This is sadly where my inexperience comes in and I'm not entirely sure which FireRed rom I used when creating the patch (it was one I had lying around and I didn't know this is something one should pay attention to until recently).

I believe the version I used is 1.0 based on what info I'm able to find on a quick google search though. Maybe that is what is causing the issue?

Thanks so much! No discord server at least as of yet (this is already much more attention than I ever expected my hack to get! :D), I will post about updates here for the time being.

oh ok thanks! Other than that, this looks amazing! Will there be Arceus in a future update for the game?
