What do you think of this?

With all these "Top Sites" going around, an idea came to mind.
All the top sites are based just on hits, and anyone can join. I had an idea for a new topsites
1. The site would have to "apply" to be in the top sites, that way if you didn't make it, you could strive to be a better site (because thats what we want right? good sites.) If you made it into the top sites, you could be proud of being in it.
2. Each week, or every few days, a site from the topsites would be selected, and rated out of 5. That way, even the best sites could improve.
3. Applications would be viewed by a commitee and selected, so it wouldn't just be one person deciding what a good site is.
4. Each week, a favorite site would be voted for "The Week's Best site" and then displayed for all to see.. Either just on the topsite page, or maybe even people on the top sites could display the "winner's" button on their site.
5. Sites wouldn't just be based on hits, they would be based on quality too, to be able to get into the top sites.

Linked to the top site would be a help forum. Based on mainly just webmasters and discussion/help to make your site better.

the idea is up in the air, and i'm open to suggestions. but let me know what you think.

ohhh, how about something like, to vote for a site, you have to state your reasons. i don't think this "place button on web page" thing is working out. we need a click/comment to vote system. :P those are some good ideas up there chibipichu

I agree with basically everything you've said there. ^^; The only problem I forsee is with the patience of today's "typical" webmaster(/mistress ;p). No one wants to wait X number of days before their application is reviewed and their site is added to the page if the quality is good. By that time, I'm sure a lot of people would just go to another topsite and advertise their site like crazy to get hits. @_@;

You would have to come up with some sort of a reward system. Such as, the highest ranked website of the month would get a free custom layout or something along those lines. Or a prize of some sort could be bi-monthly. I do like the idea of judging sites based on their content rather than their popularity and hits, though. There are just too many sites out there that are being considered the best although many smaller websites are much better. ^_^;

Yes, that's true.. hopefully maybe once it gets going, it will be worth the wait, because it will drive a lot of hits in the end right? Remember how it used to be really cool to be hosted by Bulbagarden?(I remember those days ><) Well you had to wait for that... and in the end you were happy for it. Maybe... I dunno.. as I said, it's just an idea. Probably an idea I'd need help with, so getting accepted might be fairly fast.
