[Sword & Shield] What do you think of Y-Comm?

Y-Comm is SwSh's menu for player connectivity - trades, battles, and raids being the three main things.

The Y-Comm has....not been well-received among a lot of players, to say the least. There are a lot of issues reported when it comes to connecting/seeing raids. Connecting with people being possible only via link code (as no friends list exists in the game) can sometimes make strangers guess a code and connect to your session rather than the person you're intending, which is another annoyance for people.

What are your experiences with Y-Comm? What do you think of it?

Probably repeating myself from what I've said elsewhere, but...this is awful. This is somehow worse than Festival Plaza from Gen VII, and believe me, I never imagined that was possible. I thought we'd hit rock bottom with Gen VII. Game Freak continue to surprise and appall.

I don't know who designs these things or what is running through their minds when they do. Part of me wonders if one of Game Freak's staff members is a hermit who just lives in the office and has never played another video game in their life. One who thinks that you have to use dialup to connect to the internet, and that cellphones are still gigantic bricks. Because I just cannot fathom how such a bad online system could be in a current generation video game. It's doubly painful because Gen VI's online system was so utterly fantastic and I can see any number of ways this could have been even better. If I can see it, when I'm not a game designer, I am absolutely sure that Game Freak could have seen it, and I am also sure that they could have gotten it to work, because the Switch is infinitely more powerful than the 3DS and other Switch games with online functionality do not have the issues that the Y-Comm do.

My experience with Y-Comm was frustration trying to enter raids, aggravating trying to get a trade with the person I wanted to trade with before some random person entered, and a lot of annoying pop-ups I did not ask for or want. It completely frustrated raid battles, which were a fantastic way of playing with others and bypassing the need for grinding thanks to EXP candies...if you could get in a raid. In short, this ruined the only thing I really got any modicum of fun out of Shield. So yeah, I actually hate it. I'm not just mildly irritated or majorly annoyed, I flat out hate this online system. It is the worst I have ever experienced since online gaming became a thing...and believe me, I have endured some shit in my time.

It's... Eh. I like that it's a quick access, but it was so distracting when first playing the game. I don't want to keep being reminded what everyone else has caught, or even when I'm online, it lags like crazy when there's so many people on.

Getting into raids is difficult, especially if you have a bad connection.

PSS was great, and Game Freak have managed to go backwards twice from it. Festival Plaza was bad enough, but this does a bad job showing who is online, doesn't properly indicate your friends are online, the link code stuff is annoying, stamps do not refresh nearly often enough and still display raids that you've attempted and failed to connect to...

There's a lot of work that can be done to make it a halfway decent experience. I know the switch online experience can be found wanting, but this is on Game Freak. I never had these sorts of issues when playing e.g. Splatoon 2, MH4U, Smash...

I let my Nintendo Switch Online subscription lapse because the Y-Comm was so frustrating to use. I have no idea who thought the four digit code thing was a good idea. I mean, there are millions of copies of these games worldwide - the chances of some rando being paired with you for a trade or a battle is too high - it's happened to me a few times.

Not to mention all the expired raids and stamps that don't update with active raids often enough.

yeah not gonna lie, Y-Comm is definitely frustrating. i think what would improve things a tad is to have it display only active interactions that may be going on, instead of expired ones. a lot of the time i would try to get into a raid only to find out that it's already been filled up or that the host has left and all that. @__@; kind of irritating.

guess this is a miss again on Game Freak's part. this saddens me because i feel like they can do so much better, and they should do much better. :s i wonder if things are going to change at all come the next generation... or maybe that's just naivete.
