What does music mean to you?

    Music

We all listen to it. Whether it be Lady Gaga or Lamb Of God. Everyone has their own tastes, but that does it mentally mean to you as an individual?
Does music mean something more? Does the artist or band connect with you emotionally? Mentally? Or is it just something nice to listen to?
Everyone is different and it can mean everything or nothing.

For me, it really depends on the band and the type of music.
A band like Machine Head, doesn't really effect me emotionally. Yes, they are one of my favorite bands and I love all of their music, but they don't connect with me on a metal level. Though, they are good for de-stressing. :3

However, a band like Barcelona do connect with me. Barcelona is a rather relaxed band that have gotten me though some rather tough times. From feeling a little down to coping with a friends death. I feel that I can get away from it all if I put my headphones in and just listen to them. They are soothing and after listening to a few songs, I can honestly say I feel a little better.

So, I turn the question to you. What do you feel?

I love music. I love it a lot more than most people do. :[ Music is art that's driven by a melody. I just find it so much more, uh, "attractive" than many other things. There's nothing like hearing your favorite tune and getting it stuck in your head. <3

When I listen to music, I have a tendency to not even listen to the lyrics. They're just icing on the cake, really. What matters to me most is the melody and its execution. For that reason it really doesn't affect me emotionally. I just want to hear something that's pleasing to hear. A Christina Aguilera voice is nice and pretty amazing, but most of my favorite songs are just a simple, catchy melody. That's all.

    Melody and execution.

    It's great for de-stressing, I have to say. <3

I know exactly what you mean.
Lyrics do carry a certain amount of the connection for me, as some of the songs refer to what I am feeling at that time.

Though, the song has to sound good for me to love it and connect to it.
I LOVE music so much :P
So we have something in common there :P

I actually go back to my flat if I forget my I-pod. However, it is on RARE occasions that I forget it :P

Music's a part of me the beat of my sole can't sop me cuz i'm outta controll

For the most part, the stuff I love and enjoy the most connects with me on an emotional and mental level. A lot of stuff I listen to also tends to send me to different times of my life, almost like a nostalgia kind of thing.

That also doesn't go without saying that there is music I listen to that is just pleasant to the ear and, as Alinthea described, perfect for de-stressing. :P

I'd say I'm really eclethic, and I'm listening to music pretty much ALL the time. I grew up with music, remember my whole family singing samba hours and hours nonstop when I was a kid, and started playing guitar over 10 years ago. When I'm not playing my electric violin or one of my guitars (acc/elec), I'm damn sure wearing headphones.
Music means a lot to me. Brings up my day, helps me focus, makes me remember times of my life.
What I've been stomping my feet to a lot lately are Björk, Emilie Autumn, Kate Bush, Miyavi (my all-time guitar hero), Tori Amos, Közi, Phillip Glass, Nico, lots of bossa nova and oldschool samba (I'm brazilian, though very few brazilian people are into bossa nova nowadays), and some random hard rock to set up my mood before workouts.

Well when i listen to music,I always see there is a connection to the life with the music or i see it is a explanation of everyday life, Music is also a good thing to listen to whenever you are bored or whenever you don't have anything much to do. If i like a Song,i always search for the lyric because i want to memorize it.

I find we're all individuals when it comes to music. With the music I like, something in my soul just clips on to it, Like When I first listened to Utada I thought she was a talented singer and her songs affected me both emotionally and mentally.
And some songs like "Wait & See ~Risk~" destress me. I use "First Love" to turn my mood around and etc. I use music for almost everything, even for personality.
A song has to have something to make me like it. I'm not sure what that "Something" is but I will in the future. And sometimes I care about lyrics and sometimes I Don't. Sometimes I need to cheer up so I use a lyrical song. By Lyrical I mean Lyrics that mean something. And Sometimes I don't care as long as it captures me somehow.

I' that kind of person who always listens to music. I MEAN it, - I'm Music...aholic(XD)
I always have my big headphones(like in the 1st post) on.
It affects me. It's like a drug, but it's not. ( Very poetic O.o?)

well most of the time its just to pass the time or something nice to listen to.
however bands like three days grace and linkin park(my 2 fav bands) can connect with me at times since i have been though hard times and it just makes me feel better....i also listen to music when im angry coz it helps me calm down...

    Lovely thread. :3

I love to listen to music, probably because it's something that takes little effort. xD
There are so many different genres to explore, so there's always something for everyone to enjoy, and there's never a shortage of something to listen to. I pay a lot of attention to the lyrics, but if it has a nice melody and instrumentals aswell, then that's a double bonus. I listen to a lot of progressive rock where there's usually a hidden meaning behind the lyrics (such as Pink Floyd's political statement in 'Animals'); but I can enjoy a simple set of lyrics just as much, especially if it's something I can relate to.
Then sometimes I listen to Japanese music, where I have no idea what they're saying anyway xD. Sometimes foreign music is just so awesome it can't be ignored, so I can enjoy music just as much when I don't take the lyrics into account; but my favourite songs will usually have a decent set of lyrics.

And sometimes it gets to a point where it's about more than just the music; there's the fashion icons that start a whole new trend; sometimes musicians will send out a message to society, whether it's about a war or making a statement about women's rights.

I remember going through what was probably the toughest year of my life, I had never really listened to music before besides what was on the radio. I was looking for new ways to relax (instead of breaking stuff... xD;) and for some reason I just picked up a set of headphones and started listening; I've been in love since. :3

It's amazing how just listening to music can affect so many people; and listening to music connects people aswell, it's something that nearly all people have in common. I think it's wonderful. [/fanboy attack]

It's only a form of entertainment to me... I mean, music can be used to convey all sorts of messages to the public, but the popular (mainstream) artists today only use the ideas that sell, mostly. And that's okay to me, since I don't care about the lyrics anyways. :P

Does music mean something more? Does the artist or band connect with you emotionally? Mentally? Or is it just something nice to listen to?

It really depends on the lyrics. And the type of song, I guess. Mainstream stuff today is nice to listen to, and it's what I listen to (streaming music takes way too long on my computer, so do downloads. D=) since the TV is right there and I listen to music while I eat lunch on weekdays. Of course, the music has the capability of changing my emotions (i.e. if it's a particularly sad tune, I'd feel sad too) but in the end, it's only entertains me. I'm not a deep person; simpleton here. >.>

Music is life. Life is music. That's what I'd be saying if music meant more than my family to me (Tricked ya, didn't I? XD ).
Music is fun to listen to, but not the world. It's something to get me through the depths of hell that I call my life, but not life percay (Spelling?). XD

It is good to see that music means a lot to people.

I think it is an essential part of life.
It is a way to express our feelings and how to cope as well. That is a personal statement though.

Music means a lot to me, from stress relieving, entertainment, inspiration... I can't live without my MP3 player or my giant, audiophile headphones. I don't want to say "Music is life", because I know I don't have the talent to create any songs, so I rather enjoy them instead.

Most songs reveals their own message, whether it's simple or complex, to any person listening to anything right now, it will always mean a lot to them.

Music to me is my everything.

I've always found myself to be able to get lost and almost separated from the world when I have my earphones on. It's nice, my own reality. Either if it's Rock, or Rap, Or R&B, or even Techno. If it has a good rhythm i'm bound to get indulged into it. Though sometimes it isn't such a great thing seening as a 8GB iPod Touch can only hold so much, so I have to run out and by a new 32GB one.

But regardless, I think music provides that feeling of your own space in the world for kids like me.

    But that's just my opinion.

Music, to me, is an expressive manipulation of sound. I'm very picky about what I listen to, I tend to follow musicians whose work leaves me feeling an emotional resonance.

Music is generally a way to express your feelings or to hear the feelings of the writers. It a good way for me to vent out if I'm angry or if I'm sad I just drown my self in love songs. Its my emotions all in a bundle of guitars drums or a good catchy beat.
