I remember in FireRed, I went out of my way to catch a Manky as my first catch. That Manky was realy helpful.

My question: What are the best pokemon avalibe in HG/SS in the first couple of hours?

I don't have HGSS, but I belive I qualify to answer the question, considering the originals are very similar.

Geodude- (Dark Cave) Usually the first pokemon that could potentially be a permanent member of my team, depending on whether it keeps up, if I'm in the mood for it, ect.
Gastly- (Sprout Tower) The first pokemon I get excited about catching. In fact, very excited. Almost always is given a spot on my team.
Raikou/Entei - I'm so excited about these guys. In the originals, you had to see them in the wild before you could track them and, even then, you had to check the dex to see where they are, which was extremely tedious. In HGSS, you can see them on the map card as soon as they leave the Burned Tower, so I plan on catching them early this time. I have visions of walking in to Pryce's gym with Entei following me. :P
Vulpix/Growlithe- I noticed that route 36 has Growlithe like in Crystal version! Except, Growlithe is only in Heart Gold. Soul Silver gets Vulpix. Interesting....
Scyther- Early Scizor. Bug catching contest FTW.

Everything else would probably be considered late game, so I'll stop there.

Thank you for making this thread. It's a question that I would like answered. Thanks to the one who also stated some of the Pokemon.

I'm so happy I can finally get Growlithe in Heart Gold. Thank you for telling me. (I don't really like Ninetales and I already have Vulpix and 15 Fire Stones.)

Is it true we could get Mareep before battling Falkner?

I'll name some that I know for sure you can get early.
Caterpie (common in HeartGold, but with SoulSilver you can only get it in Bug catching contest)
Metapod (uncommon, but in several areas in HG, but only obtainable via BCC in Ss.)
Butterfree (Bug catching contest only in SS, but with HG in some areas.)
Weedle, Kakuna, and Beedrill are exclusive to HG, but can be obtained via Bug catching contest in Heart gold.
Pidgey, Hoothoot (at night), Pidgeotto, Rattata, Spearow.
Ekans (only in the safari zone for HG, but common in more than one area in SS.)
Sandshrew-Union Cave, Mount Moon, Safari Zone=HeartGold; only safari zone in Soul Silver.)
    Nidoran (f) & (m)-route 35, 36 and Safari zone (both games)
    Zubat
    Ledyba-Common in SoulSilver
    Spinarak-Common in HeartGold
    Oddish
    Bellsprout

Easy way - just look at this: https://www.serebii.net/pokearth/ Click on the routes and it should tell you what is where.

Look at Johto - New Bark Town is the town you start from, heading north-west to Cherrygrove and Violet City, before south to Azelea town which has the 2nd gym, which should take up that first couple of hours (if not more, depends if you race through or not - it not it'll be longer than 2, probably). Basically routes 29-33 and any nearby caves (Dark Cave, Union Cave, Sprout Tower, Ruins of Alph and Slowpoke Well as well). Also base of Route 46 is accessible very early on.

From memory - Pidgey, Sentret, Rattata, Geodude, Spearow, Catepie/Weedle and Ledyba/Spinarak (depends on versions - Catepie/Spinarak = SS, others = HG), Hoppip, Hoothoot, Zubat, Mareep, Bellsprout, Gastly, Unown, Onix, Dunsparce, Wooper, maybe Ekans (SS) are most/all of the ones available before the 1st gym, not counting your starter Pokemon.

Yep - Mareep is definitely possible before the gym leader.

Anyways, closing then -if anyone needs to know, there's the link there for reference.
