Hello, I went to the dentist today, because my wisdom teeth have been causing me pain. Well the dentist took x-rays and well I seen them too and my wisdom teeth are growing in completely sideways and the one that is causing me the most pain has a infection and is eating away the tooth. I'm scared to be put a sleep during the procedure. I'm scared because I have heard stories of how you can still be awake but, you are paralyzed and can't tell them that you are awake and fully able to feel pain. Can anyone give me advice about my fear?

[Forgive me if i'm wrong and you can't do this]
Why don't you just have the numbing injection..?
Or don't they allow it at dentists this day and age? -.-' [stupid health and safety]
If you're so scared about this injection, why don't you just ask to be put to sleep or have some laughing gas. It's not against the law you know Oo

I second the injection suggestion, unless you're scared of needles as well. I had one once and barely felt it, I guess there aren't many receptors where they stick it in.
And Cheesymitten, Ziraider already said why he/she doesn't like the gas option...

I'm not scared of needles, it's just the idea of being put to sleep. Also, it's the doctor he want's me put to sleep.

Oh don't you have the right to choose? I guess that's private practicioners for you... Perhaps you ought to find another dentist entirely, if that's feasible/appropriate/desirable/etc.

If you tell him you are scared of being put to sleep, he may understand.
And my bottom wisdom teeth weren't supposed to cut, and they did and are sideways. So lets hope they don't grow too much though they hurt some. I don't have top ones, they never existed.

He's the only one in my town that cover my medical insurance. I live in small town with like 18,000 people. Well my top ones haven't came in yet, but those need to get cut out also, he said I have no room for them in my top of my mouth.

The other option is that they freeze your mouth, and your are still actually awake when the procedure is underway.

That sleeping while awake thing is a bit of an exaggeration. You won't remember anything from the point of falling asleep, even then when counting backwards from 10 you won't recall where you finished off before you were knocked out. After you wake up, you swear you remember hearing voices or something, but it is most likely the imagination... And anyway, it will feel like no time has passed by, you'll just feel quite drunk when you wake up though.

Also I know all this, because I was put to sleep, and had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out, as well as had a cyst repaired.

I know the chance is unlikely, but my mom watch Opera and they talked about it and IDK it's now one of my biggest fears.

I was put asleep when I got my wisdom teeth out. They still numb you when you're asleep so even if you did wake up you wouldn't feel any pain, the reason they do that is that you still have open wounds when you wake up. I just hate the feeling of them digging around in my gums, so it was an easy choice for me. When I woke up I was extremely groggy and I basically just slept for the rest of the day. Just know that there is nothing to be scared about when they put you to sleep, just that you are very disoriented when you wake up.

Ah yeah... that too actually XD

And you'll be using a medicated solution for disinfecting as well as salt water, and can't have anything too crunchy for a while.

The day I got my teeth taken out, was also the same day I won some money at school, for our school's funy day. I played Crib. XD

Dude, I'd want to be put to sleep.

The numbing injection would be my last last last resort. I hate needles in my mouth, srsly. ._. The chances of you actually being awake are what, slim to none? And besides, like Yamikarasu said, you still get an injection even if you're put to sleep because the fact of the matter is, you're going to wake up. The only difference is you feel like groggy and bleh for a while.

Ahh, well thanks on the information. I just rather know what going I guess, and sorry took me so long to replay the pain killers they gave me make me tired. I got lortabs and penicillin.

Well, a local anesthetic isn't really going to soothe your pain too much when they're quite literally going to be digging bone out of your jaw. Getting your wisdom teeth removed is far different than say, getting a cavity filled, or getting a root canal. Trust me, you want to be asleep for this particular procedure. XD

    I wouldn't worry too much about waking up during the surgery, Ziraider. Being put under isn't like simply drifting off to sleep. You go from being totally conscience to completely out in a time frame you can't won't even remember. I mean, I woke up in the recovery room and asked when the heck they were going to get the dang surgery done, having no idea it was three hours later. Besides, if you begin to stir out of your "sleep," they usually stop and prep you for more gas or whatever was in that IV. Or at least that's what my oral surgeon said when I asked the same question. XD;

Well, I will have a talk with him to make sure I don't wake up then.

There has been many people that have been put to sleep for conditions like yours. When I was a kid, I had to put to sleep too. I can't remember what it was for but I'm still here and I'm fine. You shouldn't be afraid so go for it =]

They pretty much know what they're doing...

Perhaps the most unfortunate thing however, has to do with the operation itself. Where depending on their schedule and how busy they are (and how greedy) you might even have a fast operation, and the faster it is, the more likely the more bruising will occur, and bruises are lovely shades of all kinds of colours...
