View Full Version : Using someone else's pokemon cartrage

This poll is just out of curiosity to hear other people's opinions: If you gave your friend a go of one of your pokemon cartrages, in your opinion would those pokemon still be yours since you own the cartrage? Or would they be your friend's pokemon even though they're on the cartrage that you own?

Note to moderators/admins: I didn't post this in any of the games forums because its not about any one game in particular, and there isn't a general pokemon games forum.

The way I see it as that my friend simply made data available on a cartridge that I own, and that data is part of the cartridge which has in no way been relinquished to my friend, in part or in whole. As such, unless I made a prior agreement with my friend that any pokemon he caught on it would become his, I'd consider them mine.

if he caught them himself he has every right to say, trade it to his own game, however if he gives the game back without trading then he is relinquishing them to you

Well it depends.
I mean if your friend grabbed your game and caught, lets say, Mewtwo without your permission then it would be his? After all your hard work completing the league etc.
I'd say if you agreed to let him capturing and keeping the pokemon then yes. :D

Unless you came to some prior agreement, its your poke. I'd happily invite him to buy an emulator and extract the data himself, but my data=my pokemon.

Nah, they would belong to my friend if I were to capture them on his or her game and vice versa. Actually, I'm pretty sure I once gave my cousin my Silver version and he gave me his Gold for a week each and we had to try and complete each other's Pokedex. My task was pretty easy because the only Pokemon he didn't have were Slowking and Hitmonlee. A bit of breeding, some magical King's Rock and a link cable completed his pokedex for him and even though I got him the Slowking and Hitmonlee, they were still his because I bred them on his game and traded from his game to mine and back.

For the record, he never got me the Squirtle evolutionary line I needed.

It depends. Typically, if they are regular pokes Im ok with handing them over to my friend. He did work to catch them after all. However in the case of Legendaries or Shinies we sort of have "joint custody" of them. Resons why 1) It is on my cartridge and they are registered to me. 2) He/She did all the work to capture them, they have some right to them. 3) Because of trading, the poke can belong to both of us. I actually had one friend who kept a shiny Natu for 6 months out of the year and I kept it the remainder way back during GSC.

The Pokemon are yours.

This is a bit of an exageration, but;
Pretend I lent my friend a house (yes, a house... bare with me here). The agreement was he could live in my house for free, and he could do anything he wanted in it, but it was still my house.
If if added a few rooms to it, it wouldn't suddenly make it his house now, would it?

If your friend kept them, it would be like you bought the cartridge, but he got to play and do whatever with it... that's not how it works.
The Pokemon he caught were in your game cartridge, correct? The one you payed for? Therefore, anything your friend caught would be yours.

If no agreement was made prior to the opportunity given, then I would consider the Pokemon that was caught mine. In my opinion, giving him a chance to play my own game is an offer and a favor. If he plays my game with my cartrige, then he already got his wish which was to play my game. Simply put, he added onto the data in my cartrige, and since the cartrige is mine then the data is mine too. If an agreement was made that the Pokemon he caught would be his, then the Pokemon would be undoubtbly his.
