    • Yeah, a lot of people write "alot" for some reason and I never understood why...

    A lot of people mix up "confide" and "confine"... One letter difference, but that one letter is huge!

    If it is spoken, it is a real word. Dictionaries do not decide language, they merely record it.

    Language changes over time through corruption, mispronunciation, misunderstanding and so forth. People seem not to notice this.
    Put simply: words evolve faster than the animals that speak them.


    And as much as I'd hate to see it happen, it's probably only a matter of time before "you're" and "your" both just become "your".
    Still, until then, it really grates on me that people are so stupid not to be able to tell the difference.

    EGO sum a decorus lingua. (I am a beautiful language).

    Anyway, the word "like" is misused, and nigh on abused, here in California. People talk like such:

    So I was, like, at this party, and this guy totally like spilled his soda on me, and I was like, "yo. Like, What's the deal?" And he was like "Wow sorry," and I was all like "Yeah okay. Buy me new clothes!"

    Another mis-used word is hentai, it is Japanese for "pervert", not "anime porn". A nice modern example of how words in one language become corrupted for use in another.

    False. Old English for example turned into Middle English, later turning into the Modern English we type here. Old English itself derives considerably from Old High German, or some such language; which in turn comes from an even older one, and so forth.
    The Internet is not that old.

    • Uh huh. What do you have against it. Lols ain't a word, neither is ain't. But we use 'em because they're cool. As Cassino said about old English, I mean it's posh and I suppose us forum members do like words such as: Lol, Rofl, Btw; Since it doesn't waste as much time. But say you were posh you'd say, By the way and they certainly wouldn't say Lol or Rofl. Do you have anything against it? I always type lol. Always when I show that I find it funny. You don't see people say: "That is so funny I'm laughing right now." It takes too long. Lol is shortened. You get it?

    • Well for starters, "grammar" is one that is almost always misspelled (usually as "grammer"), like in the thread title for example =p

    EDIT: Oh yeah, what I was going to say originally lol

    The most misused word here is "like" which people stick in every sentence, but doesn't that happen everywhere? Just a habit everybody seems to have, especially me. lol

    They're/there/their is of course mixed up a lot, which kind of bothers me since they're really easy to tell apart. Maybe not though o_O

    • Well, affect and effect gets confused quite a bit. And also improve and approve. Your's and you're has the same problem with some people.
    I don't think lol, btw, rofl, should be considered bad grammar since their acronyms. Their just annoying when in over use.

    To affect is the verb
    The Effect is the noun



    I'm going to look like an idiot if I got that the wrong way round.


    I've always put alot and wondered why it puts a red line under it because I've done it in my school work since primary school and no one has pointed it out to me apart from stupid spell-check.
