self-learning or classroom learning?

Are you a person that can learn a certain desired subject independently without outside help from teachers or experts or on the contrary you are inclined to learn through teachers and people with superior knowledge than the Internet, books or references? Are there any topics you specially choose to self-teach yourself such as a programming language, a verbal language, an instrument, or whatnot?

For me, even if a teacher is reading from a textbook, I feel like I retain the information better by simply listening to someone else speak, as opposed to reading it myself. Because of this, I always find lectures really helpful, as opposed to the more practical, private reading I had to do at university.

However, more scientific stuff I can do by myself, as learning that well consists of doing craploads of exercises to test one's knowledge. You can't just learn maths by listening, for example.

It really depends on what kind of information. When I read things myself, e.g. in history class, I lose my focus or concentration, but when a teacher tells it I can just listen and take it all in way better. For other stuff, like drawing anatomy, I prefer to do that on my own. Finding things out on your own and being able to make mistakes is part of the learning experience, for me at least.

I do a lot better self-learning in most cases. Specifically, I teach myself instruments rather than looking for a teacher. This is mainly because I can work at my own pace and not feel rushed towards a teacher's expectations.

I've also grown to be more self-reliant when it comes to learning due to a numerous amount of terrible and lazy teachers that simply hand out enough busy work to receive their next paycheck. This is mainly the case when I try to tackle technology, such as computers and such.

However, one thing I cannot teach myself is a language. Retaining a balance between a classroom and independent studying is a more efficient alternative, but leaning towards one side over the other seems to cause me a great deal of trouble.

Uh... I can learn history by myself if I have a textbook with me. That's usually the easy one.

...But if it's something like Algebra or Geometry I would need a teacher just in case I need help on a certain math problem.

I don't think I have the dedication to learn anything by myself. @____@; There's been a few times in school where I missed material and I then had to try to learn it on my own, but I failed miserably. Just couldn't understand and absorb the material properly. I guess I need the school environment and someone to teach me.

It's a shame, I'd love to learn some more German but I know if I try I won't really get it. Sometimes I miss being in school. :(

I'd have never learned anything if I had to self-motivate myself. I needed to have the classroom environment and a teacher there to make sure I didn't get distracted. Well, some things I'm okay doing on my own if they're a mixture of enjoyment and learning. I don't have as much trouble with creative things on my own, but I'd still do better if I was more structured about it like I'd be in a classroom.

Depends on the subject. If I'm interested in something, I can learn it on my own. If I'm not so interested in it, then I have to get help in class.

I can motivate myself to do self-learning, but there are some barriers because sometimes the internet isn't a reliable source, or if I'm stuck I don't know how to progress from there. I learned the forums version of CSS through this method. Fairly basic, but it still works.

I do prefer the classroom situation, because there is someone who knows what they are doing and they can help you. But I do hate it when classmates try to act like it's a competition to show off your brains.

I always found that I'm able to learn things a lot quicker by myself than in a classroom. Whenever we were told to read a textbook or something, I was able to figure out everything I needed quite quickly. When we had to take notes off the board or listen to the teacher though, I found it more difficult to actually learn, because everyone works at a different pace, and things get side-tracked when people start asking a lot of questions.

I self-learn general knowledge all the time, and personal philosophy. I think I understand the world better than normal, but I rely on instruction to learn anything particular. I'm more of a problem-solver than a specialist; quite whimsical; helpful rather than useful.

The only thing that comes to mind that I just could never self learn would be math. I need to be sat down and shown examples over and over and over and then repeated later on.

Generally I like self learning though. As much as I like people doing things for me I rather at least be taught once how to do something so I can do it myself when I need to rather than go and bother someone to do it for me.

Self learning on all primary subjects in my school(math, science, history, and english)
