    The Shuffle!me Experiment

Okay! So just listen to music and put it on shuffle. Write the song and the artist that plays here. Stop when you get to a song that you don't recognize / don't like / don't really feel like listening to, whichever comes first. At the end of your list, with the last song (which is going to be the one that you either don't recognize, don't like, or don't feel like listening to), just state your reason for stopping there.

    1. It's a Beautiful Day - Michael Bublé
    2. Go Do - Jónsi
    3. I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman - Britney Spears
    4. Dobby - Alexandre Desplat
    5. Watch n' Learn - Rihanna
    6. Getcha Back - The Beach Boys
    7. Hurts So Good - Carly Rae Jepsen

    20. I Care - Beyoncé
    21. Stargazers - Nightwish
    22. I Wish - One Direction

I don't really like One Direction.

Why is this here and not in Other Trivia? Because this helps each other learn more about our musical tastes. What better way to learn about our musical tastes than shuffle? Seriously underused feature, for most.

For now, you can reply as often as you like. Unless Antemortem decides that people are just spamming, in which case it'll be his decision on how often you can reply.

Don't remember it really and not too fond of what I hear. And I really needed to start concentrating on GT stuff so I was going to turn the music off anyway.

Normally I would do this with my iPhone rather than my iTunes proper because there is so much random crap on there I don't even know. I don't even look at most of it after I put it on there. I mean I think most of it is on my external too rather than my computer so who even knows. So I think it's kind of important to know what you're shuffling- is it your iPod, which is probably more regularly updated with music you currently enjoy? Your iTunes, full of random one-off songs and albums you only really wanted two things from? If I were to use my Pandora station for this, it's almost guaranteed that I'd skip a lot less because that's being continually tailored to my tastes. Spotify I'd probably skip a lot on, because their radio feature is spectacularly bad.

Also I think it would make a difference to know- where are you and what are you doing when you're keeping tabs on this experiment? Is your music able to be heard by others? Are you browsing the internet, are you walking/biking/exercising? Or are you legit just sitting down and actively listening to what you're hearing?

I'm much more inclined to skip songs if I'm walking and hit a song that significantly screws with my pace. And when I'm exclusively listening, shuffle tends to annoy me because of the ridiculous clash of styles; I prefer to listen to albums all the way through in order. Reading, playing a game, or browsing are better for the shuffle feature for me; I'm not tempted to pay close attention to the songs and they don't have a subconscious effect on the motion of my body. I also don't get as readily annoyed with clashes of style, because it's only four minutes till the next thing and I can tune it out a bit more.

idk that's just what I was thinking about while reading science things/browsing/typing this/eating and listening to whatever my itunes threw at me. could be interesting to explore those aspects of the listening experience.
