    All Things Pie

So, recently I said I would attempt to write about any topic posted in the comments of my Writer's Block thread. Well Klippy's suggestion was that I write about various flavours of pie (well he spelled it the weird American way but you get the idea). As it happens, pie is something of a forte of mine (I know, you're shocked) so I thought I'd write about a few flavours I like.

    Apple Pie

In general I prefer sweet pies to savoury, with apple pie being the crème de la crème of all pies. Apple pie is this perfect balance of sweet (but not too sweet) and a more savoury crust. As is commonly known, the apple pie is heavily associated with US culture, however it actually originated in Europe being brought to the then English colonies by the British, Dutch and Swedish. My favourite varieties of this dish are the American and Dutch (the Dutch also makes a great jam flavour).

    Beef Pie

Traditional beef pie is pretty much the quintessential savoury meat pie. Beef pies tend to be rather filling and have a simple but not boring taste created as a combination of meat, gravy and pastry. For want of a better word I'll call it wholesome. These pies are very popular in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK but actually have their origins in Egypt however it was the Greeks who created the pastry we are more familiar with and first filled the pies with meat.

    Bacon and Egg Pie
Anyone who says that you can't have pie for breakfast is kidding themselves and missing a part of their life. Bacon and eggs are amazing on their own, but when you put them inside pastry (stuff like peas and onions are optional extras that only enhance the experience) you produce the food they eat in heaven. Bacon and egg pies are not the same thing as a quiche (which originated in France) and has no real country of origin although it is noted as being popular in Australia and New Zealand. If you're confused as to whether you're eating a quiche or B/E pie, just check to see if there's a crust on top. There's no top crust on quiche... which is also really nice by the way.

    Lemon and Meringue Pie
This is a very well-known dessert pie with a delicious sweet taste (although if you stuff up when cooking it you might make it too sweet which is a no-no or worse, ruin the meringue). This pie has been around since the 19th century (so definitely not as old as meat pies but pretty damn old) with the first recipe being attributed to a Swiss baker.

    My Top Ten Pies
    1. Apple Pie
    2. Bacon and Egg Pie
    3. Quiche
    4. Traditional Beef Pie
    5. Lemon Meringue Pie
    6. Pizza (if wikipedia calls it a pie that's good enough for me)
    7. Mixed Berry Pie
    8. Mashed Potato Pie (preferably with gravy)
    9. Key Lime Pie
    10. Chicken Pie

You're request has been completed Klippy, although honestly I could have written a lot more if I had the energy.

Feel free to share some of your thoughts on the wonderful world of pie in the comment section below guys. If you have any other random topics you'd like me to write about feel free to post them in the Writer's Block entry, here or to VM/PM me.

I don't see why not... all you have to do is fill a pastry dish with whatever you're choosing and it's basically a pie.

We didn't throw it in there, you people took it out :P

Where is Shepherds Pie? Why is Key Lime so low?

    This list is invalid.

I refuse to acknowledge anything without pastry as pie. Shepherds pie is an impostor.
    You're invalid :P

    @Klippy - It's a list of pie. Of course it's awesome.
@Judge - Did you just put a cake on a list of pie? This is unacceptable.

  • Where the heck is pecan pie in this list??

If you've ever heard of pieminister, they make some awesome pie-flavours. Steak and stilton, venison and craft ale, etc. Can't go wrong!

I don't know these people are but I must find them.
The only pie people in my locale are a Jester's and they're a disgrace.
