Getting Behind the Wheel

  • I got my learner's permit and two days ago got behind the wheel of a car for the first time. Using my mom's car, I circled around the high school's parking lot my mom drove to. It was spacious enough to perform to learn how to turn. This being my first time behind the wheel, I was nervous beyond belief. Most of the time I pushed down on the accelerator too hard, only to in turn, push down on the brake just as hard.

But, I did manage to keep my mom's car in one piece and got a good 1/2 hour in. It's required that I have 50 hours of driving practice by the time I go for my first driver's test, and I'll have 3 tries to pass before I have to get an extension.

Today, I practiced for about an hour, encountering some of the same problems I encountered last time, and having issues cutting corners. I would either cut them too short and "hit" a car, in actuality an open parking spot; or cut the corner too long, and have to brake to avoid hitting the curb.

It was only my second time behind the wheel, and I was just as nervous as I was the first time. My dad said we're going back to practice again tomorrow.

It'll be some time before I'm comfortable driving, right now, that's not the case.

I was bit nervous in my first time, in a car. My sisters new one xD i didnt do very well, and went too slow.
My second time in my dads big truck i did much better, like a natural. Now to get my permit, or learn how to drive, whichever comes first.

  • Sounds like you need to ease up off the gas. The accelerator needs little pressure to get it going, so apply as little pressure as possible especially since you are in a parking lot which speed limits are usually 10-15 Mph. When you are turning let up off the accelerator and let the car turn into itself. Then when the turn is completely press back up on the accelerator.

I don't think you can ever really go too slow when you are first starting out. If I was in a car with a learner I would say worry about the speed when we get on main roads until then just stick to staying on the road, making your stops(coming to complete ones), and executing turns.
