Weekly Music Mince
This post is late as per usual, but you must all be expecting that by now. As usual the Music Mince is a list of ten songs that I have really enjoyed during the week. Last week's list includes a fairly diverse set of genres including comedy, classic rock and pop. Enjoy!
Number One
Song: My Mama Said
Artist: Aqua
Info: You probably let out a groan when you saw the word "Aqua" in the heading, but don't liken this song to terrible tracks like the infamous Barbie Girl. This is an extremely serious song with a somewhat dark and theatrical feel to it. This song is about the passing of one's mother and how the character of the song feels about this event. I am unsure if this song is based around real events or not, but you can feel emotion in the presentation of the song without the band completely disregarding their old identity either.
Number Two
Song: Prejudice
Artist: Tim Minchin
Info: I was recently shown this catchy comedy tune and I have yet to get it out of my head. Minchin combines cleverly constructed lyrics and compositions as well as his musical talents to make his audience laugh with this track and is one hell of an entertainer.
Number Three
Song: Ten Years Gone
Artist: Led Zeppelin
Info: Whilst I generally say that Fool in the Rain is my favourite Led Zeppelin song, this song is one hell of a contender and lately I can't get enough of it. This reflective song about a love that could have been showcases well constructed lyrics and what are arguably some of the most amazingly interlaced guitar riffs and drum work I have heard. Rick Rubin called this song "hypnotic" and I have to agree.
Number Four
Song: Kiss from a Rose
Artist: Seal
Info: I have liked this song ever since I first heard, even though I'm still not sure if it's about love or cocaine. Either way this is a beautiful and emotional-sounding song with composition and vocals that I really enjoy.
Number Five
Song: Big Girls Cry
Artist: Sia
Info: The third single from Sia's most recent album is every bit as good as the first two - in fact I enjoy it more than Chandelier. This is very emotional and to me it feels like a song about loneliness, something I think many of us can find very relatable. The music video, the final to feature Maddie Ziegler, is highly symbolic and artistic but it is very easy to enjoy this beautifully sad song without it.
Number Six
Song: Miles Away
Artist: Memphis May Fire ft. Kellin Quinn
Info: This is another very emotional song. It talks about the struggles of leaving one's family behind at home to continue pursuing a career in music. The song questions the decision to pursue music whilst acknowledging that music is the only career the singer wishes to be a part of.
Number Seven
Song: Failure
Artist: Breaking Benjamin
Info: I find this song as kind of hard to interpret, but it seems to me that it deals with the character's feelings of inferiority, regret and lack of importance to the world and his angst at this feelings. I feel that many of us can find something relatable in this song, even if it is not the same as I do. I have never listened to much from this band, but I feel like I really need to as I really enjoyed the feel of this song.
Number Eight
Song: Edge of Seventeen
Artist: Stevie Nicks
Info: I'm not sure what inspired me to listen to this again after not hearing it for a while, but I am so glad that I did. This powerful and highly symbolic rock song deals with Nicks' grief at the deaths of John Lennon and her Uncle (that occurred in the same weak) and the turmoil in her life throughout the time period of these events.
Number Nine
Song: Chop Suey!
Artist: System of a Down
Info: Chop Suey! is a deep song that talks about how the circumstances of our death are related to peoples' perceptions of us. It makes use of rather symbolic lyrics and an interesting construction in which the song alternates between hard and fast and soft and slow delivery of vocals and music resulting in a sound that really fits the theme of the song and is highly enjoyable.
Number Ten
Song: Angel of Small Death & The Codeine Scene
Artist: Hozier
Info: This is another masterpiece from blues/soul artist Hozier and takes a lot of influence from the book A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man which tells the story of a man who struggles to decide whether to live by the values of his religious upbringing or to pursue his love of beautiful women. The subject matter is a bit strange, but overall this is a really pleasant listen and a very catchy tune.
This wraps up yet another Music Mince, what do you think of my selection this time around guys? Any songs on their you particularly like/hate or anything? Am I the only one who noticed a disturbingly large quantity of songs about death?
