Never too old to try something new

  • The old saying "You're never too old to try something new" is universal and has truth to it. We all have moments were we discover something new around the horizon. I'm no exception.

This past Wednesday, I took a trip to my city's comic book and role playing game shop because every week at that day, they have a Dungeons & Dragons night. The classic tabletop role playing game is still going strong and the comic shop I go to every so often has a D&D get-together every week. My brother played D&D way back when I was a kid in the 80's and this was the first time I saw the game in action.

I wasn't on planning on playing. The groups were already in a campaign that was well into an adventure. When I got there, one group was short on people. Long story short, I got lasso'd into my FIRST EVER D&D game. What the group told me is that the 4th edition is beginner friendly and they helped me select a pre-made character for me to play as. I also got a level up since the others were already leveled up as well. The guy in front of me was my big helper as he explained the concepts of the game and everything else. I got a miniature character to play as and I got a few pieces of dice as well, for attacking and initiatives. That sort of deal.

Honestly, playing D&D is appealing to me. I understood the basic game mechanics, what bonuses I have when it comes to rolling the dice for attacking, defending against attacks with my stats. With the help of the guys in my group, I actually defeated 3 out of the 7 monsters in the session. Not bad.

The best thing about the get-together, you don't have to be there every week to play. People have missed sessions and they were caught up each time they came by. I may go again. Maybe I'll go there every 2 weeks or so. The way I see it, this gets me out of the house!

You should try Call of Cthulhu (: it's another tabletop roleplaying game, but it's mostly one-shots, so the team doesn't have to be there every week because you make a new character. It takes like 10 minutes to roll up a character and it's super friendly to new players. Soooo much fun!

  • My sister, brother-in-law, and my roommate are all into role-playing. Some of it's D&D but most of the time we run GURPS instead.

I'm very very bad at role-playing, but it's still really fun! You should definitely do it more often. :D

(This just reminds me that I'm due to play a two-day D&D campaign at the end of next month. I had to have my roommate build my character. He's also running the campaign. This will end in tears. D:)

  • I would love to learn how to play D&D. It sounds really fun, but I've never had the opportunity to have someone show me the ropes and I've never properly looked into it myself! Sounds like you've lucked out; that sounds really ideal. :'D
