Allons-y! The Danger (And Fun) of Time Travel (Passenger, Family Circus, Pokemon's NEXT Gen) [Daily Bloggity Entry #5]

Let us say time travel travel actually is a possibility. To begin, I just need to clarify that I am no rocket scientist. But to my basic understanding for time travel to actually work, space-time would need to be bent so much that time would eventually turn a 180 on itself and form a loop or a "closed-time like curve." For this to actually happen though, the time machine that the person uses would have to made of a material containing a property called "negative energy density." Objects containing "negative energy density" are hypothesized to move in the opposite direction of normal matter, so theoretically if a machine was made out of a material containing this property than one could move against the flow of time and space. Unfortunately though, there has been very little evidence of this kind of material existing on our planet, and if any of this kind of material did exist than it would be found in only small quantities.

Even if you were able to construct a time machine and go back in time, the risks outweigh the benefits (or at least when reflecting on you.) For one thing, time travel doesn't stop aging (yes I'm directing this at all you Whovians out there). If you spend 7 years in the year 1500, you're body and mind will age 7 years. There's no way going around it. And think about all the questions you'll be asked you go back. When you eventually go back to the present, you have a decision to make: to go back to the exact time and date in which you initiated time travel, or advance 7 years from that time point. IF you choose the first option, then you're going to really be freaking out your loved ones when you see them next. If you choose the latter option, then you would have been considered "missing" throughout that span of time.

Furthermore, you better be packing yourself a lot of food and water for your trip, because there is no way you'll survive in the past. Think you'll be able to live on some medieval mutton and ale? Think again, my friend. Our bodies are accustomed to purified food and water, meaning that our digestive systems are highly intolerant to the microbes and bacteria that would otherwise be living on nourishment anytime before the invention of purification. As a result if you did eat bacteria ridden-food, your digestive system would not be able to process it and worse, spread disease throughout your body. So if you were planning on traveling back in time before a system was put in place to keep food pure and water pure, you might want to have your mum pack you an extra snack or two.

But for discussion sake, let's say all these variables are nonexistant and nonenforceable. You've got your time machine ready to go, you hit the ignition button and you're off on your wibbly wobbly timey-wimey adventure. Where would you end up going? How would you use your time machine? Would you prevent a calamity from happening? Or would you be the one creating the calamity yourself? Personally for me, I would use my time machine to travel the world and see all of the great bands of the past. Being able to see The Beatles, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and The Andrews Sisters in their glory days would mean the world to me. I would also like to see what will cause WW3. I honestly think it is inevitable, and I'm curious to see what the repercussions will be on humanity when the dust settles. Plus that would make for an interesting story to tell the folks back home (;

Thank you! (: There's a lot of interesting information about time travel out there, I was only able to touch on the subject of it due to time restraints (and not wanting to bore people who weren't too into it :P) I highly recommend looking more into it if you get the chance!
